Call of Duty: Warzone’s Blackout-inspired mode is Black Ops Royale, a free-to-play battle royale set on Avalon. It launched March 12, 2026, at 9 p.m. PT (midnight March 13 ET). Unlike standard Warzone battle royale, it drops starting loadouts, Buy Stations, cash and the Gulag in favor of scavenging and team-based redeployment. Activision describes it as a new experience inspired by Blackout—not a remake. Playlist availability on October 8, 2026, has not been confirmed by the sources cited here.
What is Black Ops Royale?
Black Ops Royale is a distinct Warzone mode built around the pacing, traversal and combat feel of the original Blackout. Activision’s March 2, 2026 mode guide describes matches of up to 100 players divided into 25 Quad teams, fighting across Avalon.

The design shifts the emphasis from selecting a preferred kit and purchasing equipment to finding gear during the match. Warzone itself is free-to-play, and Activision presented Black Ops Royale as part of Warzone; the cited announcements do not establish Black Ops 7 ownership as a requirement.
How a match differs from standard Warzone battle royale

These rules make resource choices and coordination central: a squad cannot rely on purchasing a familiar setup, and surviving teammates may have to find a way to bring eliminated players back.

What players do on Avalon
Scavenge and adapt
Search buildings, supply boxes and other parts of the map for weapons, armor, equipment and consumable perks. Attachment Kits provide a way to improve a found weapon, but the attachments are predetermined rather than a custom loadout selection.
Choose routes and use traversal options
Wingsuit infiltration, vehicles and routes across water or exposed sand and tidal flats give squads different ways to move between Avalon’s connected areas. Dense city sectors and interiors offer different approaches from open routes and longer sightlines; the official guide presents those terrain choices as part of match strategy.

Take on optional activities and Cradle Breaches
Optional objectives include bounties, Strongboxes, relays and supply drops. Cradle Breaches add red gas and hallucinated zombie hordes, with encounters that can include a Mangler Boss or Mystery Box. These activities offer potential rewards, but pursuing them also means taking on their associated risks while competing squads remain in the match.
When it launched—and what is not confirmed now
Activision announced the Season 02 Reloaded mid-season update for March 11, 2026, at 9 a.m. PT. Black Ops Royale had a separate launch time: March 12 at 9 p.m. PT, which was midnight March 13 ET. The dates are historical, not a statement that the mode is in today’s playlist. The sources cited here do not verify its availability as of October 8, 2026; check Warzone’s current playlist or a current patch announcement for that.

Warzone Game Director Pete Actipis said in a March 13, 2026 Xbox Wire interview that the team wanted to bring a new Warzone experience rooted in Call of Duty’s first battle royale. That framing helps explain the design, but the mode is not presented as a one-to-one restoration of Blackout: it has its own map, rules and Warzone context.
