Xbox CEO Asha Sharma’s remarks about a “family of devices” and players “on the go” have fueled speculation about a future Xbox handheld. But she did not announce one. Microsoft describes Project Helix as its next-generation first-party console, and its planned 2027 hardware milestone is for developer alpha units—not a consumer release.
Did Xbox announce a handheld?
No. In remarks from an October 2026 internal town hall reported by Windows Central, Sharma said Xbox was moving toward a “family of devices for Gen-10,” while emphasizing that it would have “a great console first.” She also noted that many players are on the go and that Xbox would make some devices itself and partner on others.
That language makes a portable device a plausible interpretation of Xbox’s broader hardware plans, but it does not confirm that a handheld is being developed, who might build one, or when it could arrive. ComicBook.com’s report likewise notes that Microsoft has not officially announced an Xbox handheld.
What is Project Helix?
Microsoft’s March 11, 2026 announcement describes Project Helix as its next-generation first-party console, designed to play Xbox console and PC games. Xbox VP Jason Ronald said it would deliver “leading performance” and usher in the next generation of console gaming. The official description identifies Helix as a console; it does not establish a handheld version.

Xbox said alpha versions of Helix hardware are planned to begin shipping to developers in 2027. That is a development milestone, not a retail launch window. The announcement does not state a consumer release date or price. See the Xbox Wire announcement for Microsoft’s description.
Is the ROG Xbox Ally the new Xbox handheld?
No. The ASUS ROG Xbox Ally is existing portable gaming hardware in the Xbox ecosystem, not a confirmed Project Helix handheld. Xbox says an early version of its Windows gaming experience debuted on ROG Xbox Ally handhelds. That connects the device to Xbox’s software experience, but does not make it a Helix model or an Xbox-manufactured console.

- [Game-ready storage and fast memory]: Store your full library and multitask seamlessly with 512GB SSD and 16GB of LPDDR5 6400MHz RAM. The ROG Xbox Ally makes playing any game in the palm of your hand possible.
The distinction matters: Xbox has discussed both a console-first next-generation family and portable play, while the ROG Xbox Ally is a separate, already-existing handheld. Microsoft’s Helix announcement does not name ASUS as a hardware partner for a future handheld.
What is confirmed, inferred, and still unknown?
| Category | What the available statements establish |
|---|---|
| Confirmed | Sharma described a Gen-10 family of devices, a console-first approach, players on the go, and a mix of Microsoft-made and partner-built hardware. Microsoft describes Project Helix as a next-generation console for Xbox and PC games. |
| Reasonable inference | A portable device could fit the “family of devices” and on-the-go language. The remarks do not confirm a handheld project or a particular partner. |
| Not established | Whether a Helix handheld exists; its manufacturer, codename, specifications, price, consumer release date, or relationship to any other Helix device. |
Xbox also cited more than 1,500 games in its Play Anywhere catalog and 500 development teams that had shipped games with Play Anywhere. Those are ecosystem figures, not evidence of handheld demand, sales, or hardware plans.

Why the headlines sound more definite than the news
The “tease” framing rests on Sharma’s references to on-the-go players and partner-built devices. Those comments invite speculation about portable hardware, but her stated priority was a great console first, and she said Xbox would share more as plans develop. Without a direct announcement, specifications, or a launch date, the careful reading is that Xbox signaled a broad device strategy—not a confirmed handheld.
