It is not established who played Elon Musk’s Path of Exile 2 character. A January 2025 livestream prompted allegations because viewers and commentators thought his handling of items and navigation did not fit the character’s reported progress. That apparent mismatch is grounds for suspicion, not proof that someone else controlled the account.
What prompted the accusations?
Le Monde reported that Musk streamed Path of Exile 2 on January 7, 2025. Viewers and game commentators scrutinized the stream and questioned whether the person playing had the familiarity they expected from the character’s reported progression. The report describes moments involving item handling and navigation that appeared inconsistent to them. Le Monde’s account presents these as observations and interpretations, not a verified record of who was at the controls.
Le Monde reported that the stream had more than 4.2 million views within a few days and that the character Percy_Verence was said to have reached level 95 in hardcore mode. Both figures are Le Monde’s reporting; they are not independent verification of the character’s history or of who played it.
What did commentators say?
Le Monde quoted streamer Quin69 saying, “Elon Musk has absolutely no idea how to control his account.” Streamer and esports commentator FunKa described Musk’s play as “generally very weak mechanically” and said, “It is obvious to anyone who has played a reasonable amount that Musk cannot have piloted his account.” These are the commentators’ opinions as quoted by Le Monde. They explain why the stream drew suspicion, but they do not establish account access or identify another player.

Could the stream have looked unusual for another reason?
Le Monde also noted that Musk could have been distracted while streaming: he was heard but not seen, and had described using streams to test X’s live video service. That context offers a possible explanation for erratic play, but it neither confirms nor disproves the allegation.
What do the official account details establish?
Grinding Gear Games’ account-system announcement says accounts may include sub-accounts, accounts from different platforms can be merged, and Path of Exile 2 characters can be played across platforms. Those features describe account and platform continuity; they do not show which person used Percy_Verence.

The studio’s Early Access FAQ, dated November 21, 2024, said existing Path of Exile account holders could use their account to play the sequel and described access through keys and platform clients. It also said players could stream Early Access gameplay. These are the FAQ’s dated access details, not proof about who played Musk’s character.
The official terms grant a limited licence for personal, non-commercial use, permit streaming subject to the rest of the terms, and say a breach can terminate the licence. Those provisions do not establish that Musk violated the terms or that anyone else played his account.

What can be concluded?
The public case described by Le Monde rests on perceived inconsistencies between livestream behavior and the character’s reported progression, plus commentators’ judgments about the play. The available reporting does not establish who controlled Percy_Verence at any particular time, and it provides no direct confirmation from Musk or Grinding Gear Games resolving the question. The accurate conclusion is that the stream prompted allegations—not that account sharing or boosting has been proved.
