The announcement and release windows discussed that year came from insider reporting and speculation—not confirmation from Valve. Later coverage continued to describe the game as unannounced, with no confirmed release timeline.
Was Half-Life 3 announced in 2025?
No. In December 2025, Ars Technica reported that the year appeared set to end without official news from Valve. That makes the 2025 announcement prediction a failed forecast, not a delayed or confirmed Valve announcement. The status described in later coverage remained unannounced, and the release timeline remained unconfirmed.

Valve’s own historical roundup distinguishes official announcements from rumors and hoaxes. Its 2016 account documented the lack of a proper Half-Life 3 announcement at that time; it does not establish the game’s current status. Steam’s 2016 roundup
What was the 2025 announcement prediction based on?
May: Tyler McVicker’s claims and guesswork
In May 2025, VGC reported commentator Tyler McVicker’s claim that the project was playable from beginning to end. “This is the furthest it’s ever been,” he said, according to VGC. McVicker also expected an announcement in the summer and a winter release, but VGC described that timing as guesswork—not confirmed information from Valve. VGC’s report on McVicker’s claims

December: a possible Spring 2026 launch window
In December, Ars Technica reported journalist Mike Straw’s account of anonymous sources who believed Half-Life 3 might launch alongside the Steam Machine in Spring 2026. Straw characterized his sources as “still adamant” that the game would be a Steam Machine launch title, as quoted by Ars senior gaming editor Kyle Orland. That is a report about what Straw’s sources believed, not an announcement or schedule from Valve. Straw also said earlier date information had not been reliable enough to report in detail, and Ars noted that plans could change. Ars Technica’s December 2025 report
Is Half-Life 3 actually confirmed?
No official confirmation is established by the reports cited here. The project’s development status and possible timing have been described through insider accounts, but those accounts do not establish what Valve has announced or committed to. A 2026 article likewise characterized Half-Life 3 as unannounced and its release timeline as unconfirmed; claims about development and timing in that coverage should be treated as attributed reports rather than confirmed facts. Rank #2
- Amazing new graphics with pre-rendered cutscenes that look like they came from the movies
- More realistic physics - Objects have varied and appropriate mass, density and physical properties
- Incredibly advanced AI as enemies adapt, plan, improvise, and respond
- Hordes of new aliens and other enemies, plus a plethora of new guns and weapons
Is HLX Half-Life 3?
That connection is not officially established. A July 2026 report presented former Valve programmer Christopher Green’s coy response about HLX as a hint, but interpreting HLX as Half-Life 3 remains the report’s inference—not a direct confirmation of the title or codename. How to read the claims
- Valve announcement: the evidence needed to establish an official title or release plan. The reporting above does not provide one.
- Insider account: a claim attributed to a commentator or to a journalist’s sources. It may be informative, but it is not equivalent to an official schedule.
- Prediction or inference: a proposed date or interpretation—such as McVicker’s summer announcement guess or the HLX connection—that should not be repeated as confirmed fact.
