Just Cause 5 was reportedly cancelled after being in development at Sumo Digital, but Square Enix has not directly confirmed the cancellation in the sources reviewed. The claim surfaced in June 2025 through reporting based on a former employee’s profile; the exact cancellation date and the project’s full development history remain unconfirmed.
What the reporting says about Just Cause 5
On June 10, 2025, MP1st reported that a former Sumo Digital employee’s profile listed a Vehicles Feature Team Lead role on Just Cause 5 from 2021 to 2023 and described the project as “now cancelled.” MP1st’s report is the origin of the cancellation claim, but the employee profile is not a direct announcement from Square Enix.

Insider Gaming followed on June 11, 2025, reporting that the employee worked at Sumo Digital between July 2021 and July 2023 and that the profile was the basis for the cancellation story. Its suggestion that cancellation may have happened toward the latter part of that employment period is an inference, not a confirmed date. Insider Gaming’s coverage also reported that Square Enix said in a 2022 financial update that a new Just Cause game was in development. The financial document itself and a later publisher cancellation statement are not established by that report.
Sumo Digital’s reported involvement is not the same as a fully documented development arrangement. Avalanche Studios’ possible participation has likewise been described as an inference, not a confirmed partnership.

What the series creator said later
On November 3, 2025, Avalanche Studios co-founder and former creative leader Christofer Sundberg wrote that Just Cause 5 “would be a no-go since extremely few from the original team are there still.” PC Gamer reported that he characterized this as “a qualified guess.” PC Gamer’s report presents the comment as Sundberg’s assessment, not as an official Square Enix status update. His view concerns the prospects for making the game at Avalanche; it does not rule out another studio developing a future sequel.

The available reporting points to a project that was cancelled, but the publisher has not directly confirmed that outcome in the cited sources. There is no confirmed release date or evidence here that the reported project was revived, transferred, or replaced by another Just Cause game. Just Cause 4 remains the latest released numbered entry identified in this reporting; StopGame lists its release date as December 4, 2018, and platforms as PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
