Minecraft’s official account dates its first PC version to 2009; the full release came in 2011. The earliest version was known as Cave Game, which the game’s official anniversary article identifies as coming out on May 17, 2009.
When did Minecraft first come out?
Minecraft’s official about page says the first version for PC players was released in 2009. A 2024 anniversary article by Minecraft writer Cristina Anderca gives the specific date: “Yes, on May 17, 2009, Cave Game came out and caused a butterfly effect that would lead to you reading this article 15 years later.” The anniversary article calls May 17 the game’s actual birthday.

Why do some dates say 2011?
2011 marks a later milestone, not Minecraft’s first appearance. The official about page dates the full version to 2011, and Minecraft’s anniversary timeline places the release of Minecraft 1.0 in that year.
| Milestone | Date | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| First version, Cave Game | May 17, 2009 | The earliest release identified in Minecraft’s 2024 anniversary article. |
| Full version, Minecraft 1.0 | 2011 | The full release, as dated by Minecraft’s official about page and anniversary timeline. |
What was Minecraft called before it was Minecraft?
The 2009 release was called Cave Game, according to Minecraft’s anniversary article. That name refers to the game’s early version; it does not change the 2011 date for the full release.
