The original Game Boy (DMG-01) is mono through its built-in speaker and stereo through compatible headphones. The answer depends on which output you use.
What comes through the built-in speaker?
The DMG-01’s single built-in speaker plays mono sound. It does not reproduce separate left and right channels.
Can the original Game Boy play stereo sound?
Yes. Connect compatible stereo headphones to the console’s headphone socket to hear stereo. Nintendo’s legacy support information lists stereo headphones as suitable for Game Boy, and the Game Boy Museum catalog describes Nintendo’s DMG-02 headphones as a stereo accessory for the original system, contrasting them with its mono speaker.
Why are there two sound outputs?
The DMG-01 CPU manual describes separate SO1 and SO2 sound output terminals. Those separate outputs help explain how the headphone path can provide stereo, but they do not make the single built-in speaker stereo. The number of sound channels or output terminals and the number of speakers are different things.
