No official source reviewed supports a black tip on Pikachu’s tail. The familiar black tips are on Pikachu’s ears. Character designer Atsuko Nishida discussed the ear markings and the tail as separate design details in an official Pokémon interview.
Was Pikachu’s tail ever black?
For Pikachu’s standard design, the answer is no: the official sources reviewed do not describe a black-tipped tail. The black markings are on the ears, while the tail is described as bolt-shaped.
In a 2018 interview about Pikachu’s creation, character designer Atsuko Nishida said of the black ear tips, “I think that is a vestige from when he was dumpling-shaped.” She then explained the tail separately: “I wanted to include some parts that expressed lightning—since Pikachu is an Electric-type—so I created this design.” Pokémon’s creator interview does not say Pikachu had a black tail.
Why might people remember a black tail tip?
The likely mix-up is between Pikachu’s unmistakable black ear tips and its tail. The original Game Boy display was monochrome, a point discussed in the interview, but that is not evidence that the tail was designed with a black tip. Ken Sugimori said the coloring was likely made easy to express in black and white; the interview does not connect that context to a black tail.

What do official sources say about Pikachu’s tail?
The standard tail is bolt-shaped
The official Pokédex entry describes Pikachu’s tail as bolt-shaped and says Pikachu can use it to strike opponents. It does not give a complete color specification, so it supports the tail’s shape—not a claim about every color detail.
Female partner Pikachu has a different tip shape
The official Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! story page notes that a female partner Pikachu has a heart-shaped tail tip. That is a documented shape variation, not a black-tail variant.

What the evidence does—and doesn’t—establish
The creator interview and official game and Pokédex pages reviewed support a clear distinction: black tips on the ears, a lightning-inspired, bolt-shaped tail, and a heart-shaped tail tip for the female partner Pikachu in Pokémon: Let’s Go. They do not establish that every adaptation, frame, or fan drawing has always used identical coloring. The careful answer to “Did Pikachu have a black-tipped tail?” is that no reviewed official source supports that claim.
