In the released story of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Ryder betrays CJ: the game reveals him allied with Big Smoke and the Ballas, and he remains an antagonist afterward. Whether Rockstar always planned that twist is a separate development-history question—and the available evidence does not settle it.
What happens in the finished game?
The betrayal becomes clear in “The Green Sabre.” CJ discovers that Ryder and Big Smoke are working with the Ballas and corrupt officers. A GamesRadar+ retrospective describes CJ connecting the group to the car involved in his mother’s killing. That account is useful context for the scene, but it is not evidence about what the developers originally intended.
So, if “meant to” refers to Ryder’s role in the story players received, the answer is yes: he is a traitor in the finished game.
Was Ryder always supposed to betray CJ?
That question remains unresolved. A GameFAQs user response claims Ryder was not supposed to betray CJ in the original script, but it provides no source for the production claim. Other fan discussions make conflicting claims, and neither side is backed here by a verifiable original script, a documented developer interview, or a direct statement from voice actor MC Eiht.

What the evidence can establish
- Released story: Ryder betrays CJ and sides with Big Smoke, the Ballas, and corrupt officers.
- Original plan: No verified production source here confirms whether Ryder’s betrayal was planned from the outset.
- Ryder’s motive: The available sources do not establish one definitive, developer-confirmed explanation for why he turns against CJ.
In short, Ryder is a traitor in the finished game, but whether that was the original plan remains disputed. The claim that a late change caused the betrayal is not established by the evidence available.
