Nintendo Switch 2 did not launch in early 2025. Nintendo first confirmed a 2025 release window on January 16, 2025, then announced the exact date: June 5, 2025. The January announcement did not promise an early-year release.
When did Nintendo Switch 2 come out?
Nintendo announced on January 16, 2025, that its Switch successor would arrive sometime in 2025, without giving a month or day. On April 2, Nintendo set the launch for June 5, 2025. The console is therefore a June 2025 release, not an early-2025 one.

Can Switch 2 play original Nintendo Switch games?
Switch 2 supports compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but Nintendo cautions that some titles may not work or may not be fully compatible. Compatibility can depend on the specific game, so check Nintendo’s game and accessory compatibility listing before relying on an existing library or accessory.

Quick Recap
What to check before choosing Switch 2
- Your games: Look up specific physical and digital Switch titles in Nintendo’s compatibility listing.
- Your accessories: Verify controllers and peripherals individually rather than assuming all original Switch accessories carry over.
- Storage: If 256 GB of built-in storage is not enough for your use, plan for a microSD Express card; ordinary microSD cards are not compatible.
- Your display: The 4K claim concerns docked output and depends on both a compatible game and TV; at 4K, the stated maximum is 60 fps.
- Your budget: Treat $449.99 and $499.99 as U.S. launch MSRPs from April 2025, then compare current retailer offers separately.
