Where the Samsung and AMD rumor came from
HotHardware published “Nintendo Allegedly Eyeing Samsung And AMD RDNA Hardware For Next Switch Console” on May 8, 2020. It described a possible hybrid Samsung/AMD system-on-chip and said Nintendo was “tipped” to be a partner. The article did not name the source of that tip, and Nintendo did not confirm the proposed design. Read the original HotHardware report.
That makes the story an unconfirmed allegation about a possible future console at the time—not a confirmed specification or a reliable description of the console Nintendo eventually released.
What processor is in Nintendo Switch 2?
Nintendo announced Switch 2 on April 2, 2025, and released it on June 5, 2025. Nintendo’s product information identifies its processor as custom-made by NVIDIA. The specification page does not name a detailed chip model or fabrication node, so those details should not be presented as official specifications. Nintendo Switch 2 product information.

Nintendo lists maximum TV output of 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps, and support for 120 fps at 1920 × 1080 or 2560 × 1440. These are stated output capabilities, not independent performance benchmarks or a guarantee that every game runs at those resolutions and frame rates.
At an April 2025 developer roundtable, Nintendo director Takuhiro Dohta discussed DLSS upscaling and hardware ray-tracing capability for Switch 2, according to Tom’s Hardware. Dohta’s comments concern the released console’s NVIDIA-based hardware; they do not validate the earlier Samsung/AMD rumor. The same report quoted technical director Tetsuya Sasaki saying, “Nintendo doesn’t share too much on the hardware spec.” Tom’s Hardware’s report on the developer roundtable.

How the rumored design compares with the released console

The sources do not establish comparable benchmarks for the alleged 2020 design and Switch 2. It would therefore be misleading to claim one would outperform the other.
Samsung and AMD do work together on graphics—but that is separate
The rumor had a real technical backdrop: Samsung’s Exynos products include GPUs based on AMD RDNA. In its 2026 first-quarter interim report, Samsung described the Xclipse 550 in the Exynos 1680 as based on AMD RDNA 3. That confirms Samsung’s AMD graphics collaboration in Exynos products; it does not show that Nintendo planned or used the same technology in Switch 2. What Nintendo’s public specifications do—and don’t—tell you
Nintendo’s official specifications are the best source for published product details, but they do not reveal every underlying component. For example, the UK specification page gives output modes and describes two battery variants, one user-replaceable and one not, with estimated battery life of approximately 2–6.5 hours. Nintendo cautions that actual battery life depends on the game and conditions of use. Those battery details are stated for the UK page and should not be generalized to every regional product variant. The console supports Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch game cards. For additional storage, Nintendo specifies microSD Express cards; non-Express microSD cards can only be used to copy screenshots and videos from Nintendo Switch.
