Was The Witcher 4 Influenced by Netflix? CD Projekt Red Says It Doesn’t Rely on the Series

The Witcher IV’s developers say Netflix’s adaptation was not a relied-upon creative source; they point instead to the studio’s storytelling plan, Witcher lore and Sapkowski’s books.

CD Projekt Red’s developers say Netflix’s The Witcher series did not guide the creative direction of The Witcher IV. Game director Sebastian Kalemba said the studio does not rely on the show, while executive producer Małgorzata Mitrega pointed to the team’s own storytelling plan, Witcher lore and Andrzej Sapkowski’s books as its creative reference points.

Was The Witcher 4 based on the Netflix show?

Not according to the developers’ reported comments. In a Games.ch interview, as reported by GamesRadar, Kalemba said that cross-media synergy can help a franchise bring in newcomers, but added: “I don’t think that we rely on it anyhow.” That is a qualified statement about creative reliance—not proof that the television series has had no relationship at all to the wider franchise.

What did the developers say inspires the game?

Mitrega described the project’s storytelling plan as originating with the studio. She said the team focuses on Witcher lore and is inspired by Sapkowski’s books, adding that this is mostly what it wants to tell the world. Her comments frame the game’s narrative as the team’s own work within the established Witcher universe, rather than an extension of Netflix’s adaptation.

What is officially known about The Witcher IV?

In its official reveal announcement, CD Projekt called The Witcher IV the first game in a new saga, identified Ciri as its protagonist and described it as a single-player open-world RPG. The announcement also says the Witcher games are set in the universe created by Sapkowski’s books. Those are official descriptions of the game; the claim about Netflix not being a relied-upon creative source comes from the developers’ reported interview remarks.

How does the Netflix series fit?

The television adaptation and CD Projekt’s games share the Witcher universe, but they are different kinds of works with distinct creative approaches. Kalemba acknowledged that media within a franchise can help introduce newcomers, while Mitrega described the game’s story as rooted in the studio’s plans, lore and the books. The comments do not establish that Netflix supplied specific plot points or otherwise shaped The Witcher IV.

For additional reveal-era context, an Xbox Wire interview published December 18, 2024 said the game takes place “a few years” after The Witcher 3, according to narrative director Philipp Weber. At that time, the team was keeping details about how earlier game endings would be handled secret; that interview does not establish a current specification on that question.
