If a game keeps moving your character after you release W, A, S, or D—especially after opening a menu, clicking a window, or changing focus—the game may have missed a key-release event. That does not prove the keyboard is physically stuck. First find out whether the problem is limited to one game or interaction, then compare input devices and follow that game’s support guidance.
Find out when the movement continues
Note the exact moment the problem begins: for example, after opening or closing a pause menu, clicking outside the game window, or using a particular menu button. Then check whether it happens in one game, only on a particular server, or across other applications too. These clues help choose what to test; they do not identify the cause by themselves.
- One game or one interaction: Focus on that game’s settings, input handling, and support instructions.
- More than one application, or while typing: Check the keyboard and its connection as well as the game.
- Only in a particular game mode or server: Record that detail; behavior may differ between modes.
For example, a 2017 unconfirmed Minecraft bug report described movement continuing after a key was released on a server, but not in single-player (Mojang bug MC-113616). That report is a useful illustration of why mode matters, not proof of a general Minecraft or keyboard fault.
Test the keyboard and other connected devices
- Try a known-good spare keyboard, if available. Borrow one before buying anything. A wired USB keyboard can serve as a comparison device, but changing keyboards will not necessarily resolve a game input or window-focus issue.
- Simplify the connection setup temporarily. Disconnect nonessential USB devices, leaving the keyboard and mouse connected, and see whether the symptom changes. If you use a wireless keyboard and mouse on one shared receiver, test them separately where possible and follow the device maker’s instructions for your specific hardware.
- Repeat the same game action. Use the same key, menu sequence, and game mode so the comparison is meaningful. Note whether pressing the key again stops movement.
A Razer Insider user report describes missed key events in a particular shared 2.4 GHz receiver setup; it is anecdotal and does not show that wireless keyboards generally cause this symptom (Razer Insider discussion). Likewise, a support thread that asks a player to try different keyboard and mouse devices supports testing, not assuming that replacement is the fix (Rainbow Six Siege player-support thread).

Why a key can seem stuck without being physically stuck
Games commonly track a key as down after a press and clear that state when they receive a release event. If the game or its input layer fails to process the release, movement can continue even though you lifted your finger. A menu or window interaction may be relevant in some games, but the symptom alone does not establish that the UI caused it.
Rewired’s documentation describes particular Unity input cases involving window interactions, including a windowed-mode case with a held key and title-bar interaction, as well as a delay issue in specific historical Unity editor versions. These are bounded examples, not a diagnosis for an unspecified game (Rewired known issues).

Use game-specific support steps only for the named game
If the issue is isolated to one title, check that publisher’s official support guidance before changing files or settings. For Rainbow Six Siege, a Ubisoft Support reply in a 2018 Steam discussion suggested disconnecting extra USB devices, rebooting, verifying game files, and deleting that game’s named settings file (Ubisoft Support reply in the thread). Those are historical, game-specific suggestions—not universal Windows troubleshooting steps. Do not delete configuration files unless the instructions apply to your exact game and you understand what settings may be reset.

In a Minecraft Education support discussion opened in 2023 and continued through January 2026, Mac users described keyboard and mouse input continuing after release across multiple reported versions and devices. The discussion includes follow-up diagnostic questions but does not establish a confirmed fix; it should not be generalized to other games (Minecraft Education community discussion).
