“The program can’t start because wbemads.dll is missing”
wbemads.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called WMI ADSI Adapter. If Windows or an older application reports that wbemads.dll is missing, was not found, could not be loaded, or is not designed to run on Windows, repair Windows first rather than downloading an isolated DLL.
Which fix applies to you
Use the path that matches what you are seeing:
- Several programs fail, or the error appeared after an update or cleanup: repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
- Only one old program or game fails: repair or reinstall that application from its official installer.
- Windows Security recently detected the file: check Protection history before changing anything.
- The file exists but Windows says the specified module could not be found: a dependency, architecture mismatch, or damaged application may be involved.
- The error began after installing software, a driver, or an update: try System Restore.
- The file is in an application folder or an unusual writable folder: scan for malware and verify the file before allowing it to run.
- DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows: use matching installation media or perform an in-place Windows repair.
What wbemads.dll is
Microsoft identifies wbemads.dll as the DLL associated with the IWMIExtension interface. It allows ADSI objects to access WMI services through the WMI ADSI Adapter. Microsoft documents the interface for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003-era systems, which is why modern software may encounter it when running legacy code.

WMI means Windows Management Instrumentation, a Windows operating-system component used to access management information and services. ADSI means Active Directory Service Interfaces, Microsoft’s abstraction layer for working with directory services. The two technologies are related here, but wbemads.dll is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or .NET library.

Microsoft describes WMI DLLs as residing under:
%WINDIR%System32Wbem
On a typical installation, that expands to a path similar to:

C:WindowsSystem32Wbem
Do not assume that every current Windows edition contains exactly the same file, version, or architecture. Public file indexes list historical Windows XP metadata, including a 32-bit build numbered 5.1.2600.0 and approximately 12 KB in size. That is historical information, not a universal Windows 10 or Windows 11 specification.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates, then repair system files
This is the safest first repair when the file is missing from the Windows WMI area or multiple programs are affected.
Install pending updates
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Open the affected program again.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. The process can pause for a while. Do not close the window because the progress percentage appears stationary.

DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source. A successful result reports that the restore operation completed successfully. Restart Windows afterward.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again if necessary and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then interpret the result:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected system files were not found to be corrupt.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart Windows and test the application.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If it still fails, move to the installation-media repair section below.
This sequence is more appropriate than copying wbemads.dll from another computer because it repairs both the component store and protected Windows files.
If you prefer help identifying what changed instead of repeatedly choosing repair commands manually, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows problems; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows Update, DISM, and SFC remain the direct Microsoft repair path.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If only one program reports the error, the program may be damaged, obsolete, or incorrectly requesting a legacy Windows component. No reliable public source establishes a standard list of modern games or applications that normally require wbemads.dll.
Repair a Microsoft Store application
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and select Reset if available. Reset can remove the application’s local settings or stored data.
Repair a traditional desktop application
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Select the application’s three-dot menu.
- Choose Modify, Change, or Repair, depending on what the installer provides.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If there is no repair option, uninstall the program, restart Windows, and install it again using the developer’s current official installer. For very old software, use the original installer only when you trust its source and it is compatible with your Windows architecture.

Do not copy a DLL supplied by an unrelated application into System32, SysWOW64, or the program folder. The application could require a different build, and replacing a Windows component can create additional failures.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a file after a detection, including a legitimate file that has been altered or placed in an unexpected location.
Check Windows Security Protection history
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open a detection related to
wbemads.dll. - Check the original file path and the detection details.
Do not restore the file simply because its name looks familiar. A genuine Windows copy should normally be associated with the Windows WMI directory, not a random user-writable folder or an unrelated application directory. Verify the original path and digital signature before taking action.
If the file was in an expected Windows location and you have confirmed that the detection was a false positive, use the available Windows Security action to restore it. Microsoft warns that restored files can be detected again. Do not allow a file that remains suspicious.

Fix 4: Distinguish a missing DLL from a missing dependency
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that wbemads.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named file but failed to load another library that it requires.
Check these points:
- Does
wbemads.dllexist in%WINDIR%System32Wbem? - Does the error occur only in one application?
- Is the application 32-bit or 64-bit?
- Did the problem start after replacing or updating the application?
- Is the DLL located in an application folder rather than the Windows WMI folder?
A 32-bit program and a 64-bit program do not necessarily use the same DLL search locations. Historical public metadata describes wbemads.dll as 32-bit, but there is no current Microsoft source establishing a universal file arrangement for every Windows release. Do not download a supposed 64-bit copy merely because Windows itself is 64-bit.
Do not reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET as a presumed fix for this file. Install one of those runtimes only if the affected application separately documents it as a requirement.
Fix 5: Update drivers only when the timing points to a driver problem
A driver update is not a normal repair for a missing WMI ADSI Adapter file. Consider it only if the error began immediately after a hardware or driver installation and other device-related problems appeared at the same time.
To check drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the recent change.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the provider and driver date.
- Use Update Driver or install a newer package from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows.
If the problem began after an update, use Roll Back Driver when the button is available. Do not replace WMI files as a substitute for correcting a faulty device driver.

If manually checking dozens of hardware vendors and driver versions is the main obstacle, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show reported driver issues; its free scan identifies what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional and is not a reason to update drivers when the evidence points to Windows component corruption instead.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 as a routine solution
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It does not restore a deleted Windows file, repair the component store, or rebuild WMI automatically.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Running a command such as this is not a first-line fix:
regsvr32 wbemads.dll
It may fail because the file is absent, the architecture is wrong, the DLL does not expose the required registration entry point, or the underlying dependency is missing. A registration error does not prove that the file itself is corrupt.
Use regsvr32 only when the affected software’s official documentation specifically requires registration and identifies the correct file and architecture. For a missing wbemads.dll, use DISM and SFC instead.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore can help when the error began after installing an update, driver, or program. It can revert system files, registry settings, and installed programs without removing personal documents.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
If no restore point exists, continue with Windows repair rather than creating one after the problem has already occurred.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 8: Repair Windows with matching installation media
If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, use a matching Windows installation source. Microsoft documents a source-based command similar to:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:\serverc$windows /LimitAccess
The source must closely match the installed Windows version and edition. An incorrect source can cause the repair to fail or produce a misleading result. Microsoft’s guidance for repairing a Windows image explains the source requirements.
If this still does not repair the component, inspect the CBS log, back up important files, and perform an in-place Windows repair using official Microsoft installation media. A clean installation should be a last resort after confirming that the installation itself cannot be repaired.

Right-click the file, select Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab when present. Also scan the file with Windows Security. File name, size, and version alone do not establish authenticity.
There is no official standalone Microsoft download package for wbemads.dll identified here. Avoid random DLL download sites sites because the file may contain malware, be the wrong architecture, be the wrong historical build, or fail because its dependencies and Windows component configuration remain damaged.
FAQ
Is wbemads.dll legitimate?
Yes. It is a real Microsoft component associated with the WMI ADSI Adapter and the legacy connection between ADSI objects and WMI services.
Is it part of Active Directory?
It belongs to Windows WMI/ADSI infrastructure. ADSI can work with directory services such as Active Directory, but the file is not an Active Directory database or a separate Active Directory download.
Should I reinstall Visual C++?
Usually not. wbemads.dll is not identified as a Visual C++ runtime file. Reinstall Visual C++ only if the affected application separately requires it.
Does Windows 11 always include this DLL?
Current Microsoft documentation does not establish that every modern Windows edition ships the same file. If old software expects it, the software may be incompatible with the current system.
Can I fix the error by copying the DLL into System32?
Do not do this. It can overwrite a protected component, introduce the wrong architecture, and leave the component store or WMI configuration unrepaired.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen should I reinstall the program?
Reinstall it when only that program fails, its installer is damaged, or the program is an old application that incorrectly bundled or requested the component. Use the developer’s official installer.
What if DISM and SFC both fail?
Retry DISM with a closely matching installation source, review the CBS log, then consider an in-place Windows repair or Microsoft support. Do not switch to an unverified DLL download.
