The 60-second answer
wbiosrvc.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component used by the Windows Biometric Framework. It belongs to the Windows Biometric Service, whose service name is WbioSrvc; Microsoft documents the file at %SystemRoot%System32wbiosrvc.dll and the service as running inside a privileged svchost.exe process.

It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET component, or normal application download. Do not replace it with a random copy from a DLL website.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe safest repair order is:
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Run DISM from an elevated Command Prompt.
- Run SFC immediately afterward.
- Check antivirus quarantine and the file’s signature.
- Repair Windows or use System Restore if system repair fails.
- Reinstall the biometric driver only when Windows Hello or fingerprint hardware is also failing.
- Repair the affected application if only one program reports the error.
What causes wbiosrvc.dll errors
The message does not always mean the file itself is absent. Common causes include:
#1 Best Overall
- 1. COMPATIBLE WITH WINDOWS 11, 10, 8.1 & 7 Designed for compatible 64-bit PCs and laptops that support USB booting. Works with Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 installation and recovery options.
- 2. INSTALL, REINSTALL & REPAIR Provides access to installation and recovery options for startup failures, boot errors, system crashes, failed updates, system repair and reinstallation. Results depend on the condition of the computer and the cause of the problem.
- 3. READY-TO-USE BOOTABLE USB Reusable installation and recovery media that helps eliminate the need to download large system files or create bootable media yourself. Insert the USB drive, open the computer’s boot menu and select the appropriate installation or recovery option.
- 4. HELP KEEP OLDER PCS USEFUL Refresh, reinstall or maintain a compatible older computer before deciding whether replacement is necessary. Suitable for home computers, office workstations, PC enthusiasts and technicians who regularly work with supported systems.
- 5. IMPORTANT COMPATIBILITY & LICENSE INFORMATION Supports compatible 64-bit computers with UEFI or Legacy BIOS USB booting. No Windows license, activation key or product key is included. Activation may require an existing digital license or a separately purchased valid product key. Back up important files before installation or repair.
- A damaged or missing protected Windows component
- Windows servicing corruption after an update or interrupted repair
- Antivirus quarantine or malware
- A manually copied DLL from the wrong Windows build or architecture
- A missing dependency that prevents the DLL from loading
- A fingerprint-driver or Windows Hello problem
- A damaged application that is incorrectly reporting a dependency failure
- Disk errors that repeatedly corrupt repaired files
A specific application can mention wbiosrvc.dll even when you never use fingerprint sign-in. Software may check Windows biometric APIs, load shared Windows components during startup, or report a failed dependency using the first DLL name it encountered.
Check the legitimate file location
On 64-bit Windows:
- Native 64-bit Windows components normally belong in
%SystemRoot%System32. - 32-bit components used by 32-bit programs normally belong in
%SystemRoot%SysWOW64.
On 32-bit Windows, the normal system location is %SystemRoot%System32.
This naming is counterintuitive: on 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit files, while SysWOW64 contains redirected 32-bit system files. Microsoft explains this behavior in its file-system redirector documentation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
To inspect the locations:
- Press
Win+E. - Enter
%SystemRoot%System32in the address bar. - Search for
wbiosrvc.dll. - On a 64-bit installation, also check
%SystemRoot%SysWOW64. - Right-click the file, select Properties, and open Digital Signatures.
A correctly signed Microsoft file in the expected Windows directory is consistent with a legitimate installation. An unsigned copy in a program folder, Downloads, or another unexpected directory needs investigation. A file’s presence alone does not prove that Windows can load it or that its dependencies are healthy.
Do not select a replacement based only on matching file size. Microsoft file tables show that architecture-specific copies and historical Windows builds differ. A version from one Windows release may be incompatible with another.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates
A pending cumulative update can contain a repaired Windows component or a servicing correction.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Try the affected application or Windows Hello again.
If the error began immediately after an update, do not assume that the update caused a missing DLL. The update may have exposed existing component-store damage or a driver incompatibility. Continue with DISM and SFC before attempting manual replacement.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as its repair source.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window just because progress appears to pause.
- Restart Windows if DISM reports that repair completed successfully.
Run SFC
Open an elevated Command Prompt again if necessary and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then interpret the result:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected files appear intact. Continue with the dependency, driver, quarantine, and application checks below.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test the failing program.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and run SFC once more. If it still fails, use a repair reinstall or System Restore.
- Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation: restart into Safe Mode and run SFC there, or proceed to Windows repair options.
When repeatedly hunting through component versions and interpreting DISM and SFC results becomes impractical, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan showing what needs attention; repair actions are performed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows repair remains the correct path for a protected system component.

Defender or another antivirus product may have quarantined a genuine file after a false detection. Malware may also have replaced or damaged a system component.
- Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving
wbiosrvc.dll. - Expand a detection and inspect its path and threat details.
Restore the file only if you have verified that the detection is a false positive and that the file is a genuine Microsoft copy in the correct Windows directory. Microsoft warns that restoring a real threat can expose the computer.
If the path is unexpected, the signature is absent, or you suspect malware, do not restore it. Update Defender, run a full scan, and use Microsoft Defender Offline if necessary. A compromised installation may require recovery or a Windows reinstall rather than a restored DLL.
Fix 4: Check whether Windows Hello or the fingerprint reader also fails
A biometric-driver problem is more likely when the DLL message appears alongside one of these symptoms:
- The fingerprint reader disappears from Windows
- Windows Hello says it is unavailable
- Fingerprint enrollment fails
- The problem began after a driver or Windows update
WbioSrvcwill not start
First restart the service:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
net stop WbioSrvc
net start WbioSrvc
If the service starts but the device still fails, reinstall the driver:
- Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
- Expand Biometric devices.
- Right-click the fingerprint device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current driver from the computer manufacturer’s official support page.
- Return to Device Manager and confirm that the device has no warning icon.
- Test Windows Hello under Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
Use the driver intended for the exact computer model and Windows architecture. Microsoft provides general Device Manager driver guidance.
Manually identifying the correct biometric package can mean comparing hardware IDs and several manufacturer downloads. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan identifies problems, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is not required, and the computer manufacturer remains the preferred source for a model-specific biometric driver.
Fix 5: Test for a missing dependency
“The specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency is missing even when wbiosrvc.dll is present. Windows loads a DLL together with the other libraries it imports, so the named file is not always the failed file.

Do not immediately reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET. Those packages are not the normal source of wbiosrvc.dll. Reinstall one only if the error separately names a runtime DLL belonging to that package.
To separate a system problem from an application problem:
- Check whether Windows Hello and the fingerprint reader work.
- Test another application that uses ordinary Windows functions.
- If only one program fails, use its official Repair, Verify files, or Reinstall option.
- Update that application from its developer.
- Check the application’s own installation directory for damaged or quarantined files.
- Test after temporarily repairing the application, not by copying
wbiosrvc.dllinto its folder.
If the same error appears across Windows or multiple unrelated programs, treat it as a Windows component problem and return to DISM, SFC, and the repair-install options.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It registers DLLs that expose the required registration entry points, usually for COM components.
wbiosrvc.dll is a Windows Biometric Service library hosted by svchost.exe, not a normal self-registering control. Running:
regsvr32 wbiosrvc.dll
normally does not repair this failure and can produce another misleading error. Microsoft describes the command’s intended use in its regsvr32 documentation.
Fix 6: Use Windows repair or System Restore
If DISM and SFC cannot repair the component, use a repair installation rather than downloading an isolated DLL.
On supported Windows 11 installations:
- Open Start > Settings > System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the repair.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings where the option is available. Microsoft documents the process in its repair-reinstall guidance.
If that option is unavailable, use official Windows installation media for an in-place repair, or use System Restore:
- Press
Win+R. - Type
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Select a restore point created before the error began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Confirm the restore.
System Restore rolls back system files and settings without normally affecting personal files. See Microsoft’s System Restore guidance.
Manual replacement is justified only as an advanced recovery operation using a known-good file from the identical Windows build or official installation source. Never copy a DLL from a download site into System32.
FAQ
Is wbiosrvc.dll safe?
A Microsoft-signed copy in the expected Windows directory is a legitimate Windows component. An unsigned copy elsewhere may be an application-private file or a malicious lookalike and should be investigated.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Do I need Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Generally no. wbiosrvc.dll is part of Windows Biometric Framework, not those redistributable packages. Install or repair a runtime only when the error names a different runtime DLL.
Is this always a fingerprint-driver error?
No. The file can fail because of Windows component corruption, quarantine, malware, architecture mismatch, a missing dependency, or a damaged application. Reinstall the biometric driver when Windows Hello or the biometric device also fails.
Can I download wbiosrvc.dll separately?
There is no Microsoft standalone wbiosrvc.dll download or redistributable package. Random DLL sites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, or a file from an incompatible Windows build, while leaving the underlying problem unresolved.
What if SFC and DISM report no problem?
Check the file signature and location, inspect antivirus Protection History, test another user account, and determine whether only one application fails. If the error persists system-wide, use a repair reinstall or System Restore. Also check storage health if repaired files become corrupt again.
