wbprotect.dll Errors: Verify the Parent Program Before Repair

By VGSources Team 8 min read

wbprotect.dll is associated with Rising Antivirus, particularly older Rising Antivirus 2012 installations. wbprotect.dll is not a Windows system DLL, Microsoft runtime, DirectX file, or standard driver component.

The safest fix is to identify the Rising installation that needs the file, then repair or reinstall that complete program. Do not download a loose copy and place it in System32 or SysWOW64. A standalone file can be the wrong version, wrong architecture, corrupted, or malicious, and it does not repair the missing parent application.

1. Confirm which program is requesting wbprotect.dll

Time needed: 5–10 minutes

First determine whether the error is coming from Rising Antivirus, a leftover service, or an unrelated program.

  1. Reproduce the error and note the name of the application or service shown in the message.
  2. Open Settings with Windows + I.
  3. Select Apps, then Installed apps on Windows 11. On Windows 10, select Apps & features.
  4. Search for Rising, Rising Antivirus, or RAV.
  5. If the program is listed, note its exact name and version.
  6. If it is not listed, open Control Panel.
  7. Select Programs > Programs and Features and look for the same entries.

Historical file records place the DLL in a path similar to:

C:Program FilesRisingRAVwbprotect.dll

A file in a Rising installation directory is consistent with the known association. A copy in a temporary folder, an unrelated application’s directory, or a random startup location needs additional malware checking.

To inspect a file that still exists:

  1. Right-click the program shortcut and choose Open file location.
  2. Search that folder for wbprotect.dll.
  3. Right-click the file and select Properties.
  4. Check the General and Details tabs.
  5. Open the Digital Signatures tab if it is present.
  6. Confirm that the signer is Beijing Rising Information Technology or that the signature otherwise matches the installed product.

The filename alone does not establish that a file is safe. A copy with no valid signature, an unexpected path, or a malware detection should not be restored simply because it is named wbprotect.dll.

2. Repair Rising Antivirus from Windows

Time needed: 5–15 minutes

Repair is the least disruptive fix when the parent program is still installed.

Windows 11 and Windows 10 Settings

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find the Rising program.
  3. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  4. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  5. Select Repair.
  6. Restart Windows and open Rising Antivirus again.

Windows does not provide repair options for every desktop application. Microsoft documents the available app-repair paths here.

If there is no Repair button, or the repair finishes without restoring the file, use the classic Control Panel path:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
  3. Right-click the Rising product.
  4. Choose Repair or Change, if offered.
  5. Follow the setup wizard.
  6. Restart the computer.

The repair worked if Rising starts without the missing-DLL message and its services load normally. If Windows still reports wbprotect.dll, continue to the reinstall step rather than copying a DLL manually.

3. Uninstall and reinstall the complete Rising program

Time needed: 15–30 minutes

An incomplete update, damaged installation, or old removal can leave a shortcut or service pointing to a file that no longer exists.

  1. Save any work and close Rising-related windows.
  2. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Select the Rising product and choose Uninstall.
  4. If Settings does not list it, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
  5. Uninstall the Rising entry from there, or use the product’s official uninstaller if it provides one.
  6. Restart Windows when prompted.
  7. Obtain the complete installer from Rising’s official product channel or from your organization’s approved software administrator.
  8. Install the product normally.
  9. Restart Windows again.
  10. Test the program or shortcut that produced the error.

No current official Rising page has been verified as providing a standalone wbprotect.dll download or a legacy installer confirmed to contain a particular catalogued build. Use a complete, legitimate product installer instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the old Rising product is no longer supported or no official installer is available, removing the obsolete installation is safer than reconstructing its files from third-party DLL repositories. If a stale service continues generating the error after uninstalling, restart Windows and check Settings > Apps and Control Panel for remaining Rising entries. Do not delete arbitrary registry keys.

4. Check Microsoft Defender quarantine

Time needed: 5–15 minutes

Security software may have quarantined or deleted the file. Do not restore it automatically. A missing security component can indicate either a false positive or a compromised installation.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Expand the detection involving wbprotect.dll.
  5. Check the detection name and original file path.
  6. Compare the path with the installed Rising directory.
  7. Check the file’s publisher and digital signature if the file is still available elsewhere in the installation.

Restore or allow the file only when all of the following are true:

  • The original path belongs to the installed Rising product.
  • The file is digitally signed by the expected publisher.
  • The detection is reasonably identified as a false positive.
  • You obtained the parent software from a trustworthy official or organizational source.

Microsoft notes that Defender may detect a restored file again. Its quarantine guidance is available in Protection History.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Defender identified the file as malware, do not restore it. Remove the obsolete Rising installation, run a full or offline Microsoft Defender scan, and reinstall only a legitimate supported product if one is available.

5. Check whether the error is from a stale service or shortcut

Time needed: 10–20 minutes

Sometimes Rising has already been removed, but Windows still tries to start an old executable.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type services.msc and press Enter.
  3. Look for services clearly belonging to Rising or RAV.
  4. Double-click a relevant service and read its Path to executable.
  5. Do not change or delete a service unless you have confirmed it belongs to the obsolete Rising installation.
  6. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  7. Select Startup apps and look for a clearly identified Rising entry.
  8. Disable only the confirmed leftover entry, then restart.

Also inspect the shortcut that displays the error:

  1. Right-click the shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Read the Target field.
  4. If it points to a deleted Rising folder, remove the shortcut rather than trying to replace the DLL.

If you are unsure which service or startup item is involved, leave it unchanged and provide the executable path to Rising support or your IT administrator.

6. Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged

Time needed: 15–30 minutes

DISM and System File Checker do not normally restore a third-party Rising DLL. Use them when Windows reports broader corruption, several built-in applications fail, or other system files are also missing.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
  3. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows and test the affected application again.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC and explains the process in its system-file repair guidance.

Repeating these commands will not recreate a missing Rising file. If Windows reports that it repaired files but wbprotect.dll is still missing, return to the Rising repair or reinstall procedure.

When manually hunting through Windows components and repeating SFC or DISM does not show what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system issues; its free scan shows findings, while repair features require the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the Rising parent program remains the definitive fix for this application DLL.

7. Do not install Visual C++ or drivers unless the error identifies them

Time needed: 5–20 minutes

wbprotect.dll is not identified as a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime DLL. Do not install redistributables as the normal response to this filename alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install or repair a Visual C++ package only if the complete error also names files such as MSVCP, VCRUNTIME, or ucrtbase, or if the affected application explicitly requires it. Use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable packages.

Drivers are also not the normal cause. Device Manager cannot replace a missing Rising DLL:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the device category related to the application, if one is known.
  4. Right-click the confirmed device and choose Update driver.
  5. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  6. Restart if Windows installs an update.

Do not update unrelated devices simply because a DLL error appeared. Forcing a driver change can add another problem without restoring the parent application.

When checking many devices manually and guessing which driver is stale becomes impractical, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver issues; its free scan identifies findings, while driver installation requires the full version. It is not required for wbprotect.dll, and reinstalling Rising remains the appropriate application-level repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Handle architecture and registration errors correctly

A public catalog describes one 32-bit build, but that is not an authoritative architecture matrix for every Rising release. A 32-bit application can legitimately use a 32-bit DLL on 64-bit Windows. Do not download a 64-bit replacement merely because Windows itself is 64-bit.

If the message says the file is “not designed to run on Windows” or shows status 0xc000012f, suspect corruption, an incompatible replacement, or a missing dependency. Reinstall the matching Rising build instead of mixing files from different releases.

Do not routinely run:

regsvr32 wbprotect.dll

regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM or ActiveX DLLs. Many application DLLs do not export DllRegisterServer, so registration produces another error and does not restore the missing dependency. Microsoft explains when regsvr32 applies in its support guidance.

Common causes and the correct response

Likely cause Correct response
Incomplete Rising installation or update Repair, then reinstall the complete product if needed
Antivirus quarantine or deletion Check Protection History and restore only after verification
Leftover service or shortcut Confirm its executable path and remove the obsolete parent program
Corrupt or incompatible DLL Reinstall the matching Rising product version
Malware remediation altered the installation Scan the computer and reinstall from an official source
Windows component corruption Run DISM, then SFC
Recent system change Consider System Restore if a suitable restore point exists

System Restore can roll back system files, registry settings, and installed programs without normally affecting personal files. Open Start, search for Create a restore point, select System Restore, and choose a restore point from before the failure. Microsoft describes the process here.

FAQ

Is wbprotect.dll a Windows file?

No verified evidence places it among Windows system files. Public file records associate it with Beijing Rising Information Technology and Rising Antivirus, particularly Rising Antivirus 2012.

Is every wbprotect.dll copy safe?

No. Validate the complete path, digital signature, publisher, antivirus status, and origin. A file outside the expected Rising directory requires deeper investigation.

Should I download wbprotect.dll from a DLL website?

No. Random downloads can contain malware or the wrong version and architecture. They can also leave the damaged Rising installation, service, or shortcut unresolved.

Should I copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64?

No. Historical records place it in the Rising installation directory, not a Windows system directory. Copying it can cause version conflicts and does not establish that the file is legitimate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can SFC restore wbprotect.dll?

Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, while wbprotect.dll is associated with third-party Rising software.

What should I record if the error continues?

Record the exact error text, executable name, full path that requested the DLL, Windows version, Rising product and version, Defender detection name, and whether the file was present before quarantine. This information helps Rising support or enterprise IT identify a stale service, damaged installation, or unsafe file.
