“This application failed to start because dlaa2drs.dll was not found,” “The program can’t start because dlaa2drs.dll is missing from your computer,” and “Error loading dlaa2drs.dll” are common forms of this problem. dlaa2drs.dll is a Lexmark Data Retrieval Library component used by an older Lexmark printer or scanner imaging-driver family, not a normal Windows runtime.
The 60-second answer
Do not download dlaa2drs.dll from a random DLL website and do not copy it into System32. The safest fix is to identify the Lexmark printer or scanner connected to the computer, uninstall its damaged software, restart Windows, and install the exact Lexmark driver package for that model and Windows architecture.
The file is associated with Lexmark WIA imaging software. It may be installed inside the Windows Driver Store rather than directly in C:WindowsSystem32. A missing-file message can also mean that a dependency of dlaa2drs.dll is missing, so copying the named file alone often does not solve the loader error.
The filename alone cannot reliably identify the exact Lexmark model or original installer package.

What dlaa2drs.dll does
dlaa2drs.dll is described as a Data Retrieval Library component. Public file records associate it with Lexmark International and an older printer/scanner driver family. Related DLAA2 files include imaging, viewing, resource, and error-handling components used by the same general WIA driver family.
This is an application and device-driver file, not a verified native Windows component. It is not normally part of:
- Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable
- DirectX
- .NET
- The core Windows operating system
An indexed build is listed as 32-bit, version 1.0.0.0, and approximately 0.71 MB. Those details describe a known build, not necessarily every copy installed on every computer.
A reported installation location resembles:
C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepositorywiadl002.inf_x86_...dlaa2drs.dll
That path is evidence of a Lexmark WIA driver package, not a guaranteed location. Windows manages Driver Store packages through device installation. Do not manually edit the Driver Store or replace files inside it.
Why Windows reports the error
The usual causes are:
| Cause | What it means | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| Damaged Lexmark installation | The driver or one of its files was removed or corrupted | Reinstall the complete Lexmark package |
| Incomplete uninstall | Windows still starts an old Lexmark component | Remove the obsolete software or device |
| Windows upgrade or cleanup | A legacy driver no longer matches the installed system | Install the current model-specific package |
| Antivirus quarantine | Security software moved the file | Check Protection history, then reinstall safely |
| Architecture mismatch | A 32-bit component is being loaded by the wrong process | Use the correct Lexmark package and application |
| Missing dependency | Another DLL required by the file is absent | Repair the driver package instead of copying one DLL |
| Orphaned startup entry | A removed Lexmark program is still launched at startup | Uninstall the old software or remove its obsolete entry |
The message “The specified module could not be found” is especially misleading. It can mean that dlaa2drs.dll exists but a dependency it needs cannot be loaded.
Fix 1: Reinstall the complete Lexmark driver package
This is the most likely solution.
1. Identify the affected device and program
Check which Lexmark printer or scanner is installed. Look at the device label, Windows printer list, or the application that displays the error. Also note the executable named in the error if one is shown.
Do not guess the model from dlaa2drs.dll. The filename does not reliably identify a particular printer.
2. Remove the old Lexmark software
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Lexmark.
- Remove the Lexmark printer, scanner, imaging, or scan utility associated with the device.
- If it is not listed there, open Control Panel.
- Select Programs → Programs and Features.
- Uninstall the relevant Lexmark software.
Do not remove unrelated Windows imaging components. If you are unsure which entry belongs to the affected device, record the names first and search for the device model in Windows printer settings.

3. Remove the remaining device when necessary
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Print queues, Printers, Imaging devices, and Cameras.
- Find the affected Lexmark device.
- Right-click it and choose Uninstall device.
- Only select Attempt to remove the driver for this device when the Lexmark installer or the device-removal process specifically requires it.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
Removing the device entry does not mean you should delete individual DLLs from System32 or the Driver Store.
4. Install the correct package
Download the driver from Lexmark’s official support and driver page. Select the exact device model and the Windows version and architecture shown for your computer.
Run the installer as administrator:
- Right-click the downloaded installer.
- Select Properties.
- If an Unblock checkbox appears on the General tab, select it and choose Apply.
- Right-click the installer again.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup wizard.
- Restart Windows when installation finishes.
Reconnect the printer or scanner only when the installer requests it, unless the model’s setup instructions say otherwise.
Test both functions provided by the device. Print a test page, then open the Lexmark scanning software or Windows Scan and perform a scan. If both work without the DLL message, the driver package has restored the missing component and its dependencies.
When manually hunting through old driver packages, it is easy to select the wrong architecture or an obsolete release. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention, while the full version performs the driver installation; for this file, the definitive fix remains reinstalling the correct Lexmark package for the device.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may have removed or quarantined a genuine driver file, or it may have detected a tampered copy.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry mentioning
dlaa2drs.dll, Lexmark software, or the affected installer. - Expand the entry and review its location and detection details.
Do not restore the file solely because its name matches the error. Restore it only if it is clearly part of the installed Lexmark package and the file is digitally trusted. If the entry is suspicious, leave it quarantined and run a full scan.
The safer repair is usually to remove the damaged installation and reinstall the package obtained from Lexmark. A clean installer can replace a corrupted or altered file without preserving a questionable copy.
Fix 3: Confirm the 32-bit and 64-bit match
At least one indexed dlaa2drs.dll build is 32-bit. A 32-bit DLL cannot load into a 64-bit process, and a 64-bit DLL cannot load into a 32-bit process.

A 64-bit version of Windows can still run 32-bit Lexmark software through its WOW64 compatibility layer. Therefore, seeing a 32-bit Lexmark component on 64-bit Windows is not automatically an error. The important question is whether the DLL matches the application and driver package that use it.
Check your Windows architecture:
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select System → About.
- Read System type.
Then reinstall the Lexmark package intended for that Windows installation and device. Do not substitute similarly named files such as DLAA1drs.dll, DLAA3drs.dll, or LXAA2drs.dll.
If the error appears only when a particular 32-bit scanning application starts, update or reinstall that application as well. Its own dependencies may be missing even though Windows is functioning normally.

Fix 4: Check the Windows Image Acquisition service
Scanning depends on Windows Image Acquisition, commonly called WIA.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
- Double-click it.
- Set Startup type to Automatic or Manual, depending on the existing device setup.
- If the service is stopped, select Start.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Restart the Lexmark scanning application.
If WIA will not start, note the error shown in the service dialog. Reinstall the Lexmark package before changing unrelated Windows services. A WIA service problem can prevent scanning, but it does not prove that dlaa2drs.dll itself is a Windows file.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when Windows servicing corruption, a failed update, or damaged protected files may be preventing the driver from installing. They may not restore a third-party Lexmark DLL directly.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for DISM to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete, then run the Lexmark installer again.
SFC checks protected Windows files. DISM repairs the Windows component store used for servicing. Neither command is a replacement for the correct Lexmark driver package.

If repeatedly running repair commands is not identifying what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows problems and show its findings; the free scan identifies issues, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the Lexmark software remains the direct fix for this third-party DLL.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
If the problem began immediately after a driver update, cleanup, or Windows change, System Restore may return the driver configuration to an earlier working state.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Next → Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can change installed applications, drivers, and system settings. After the rollback, test the Lexmark device and then install a compatible driver if necessary.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a COM registration entry such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal repair command.
Running this against the file:
regsvr32 dlaa2drs.dll
may produce an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found. That does not mean Windows needs a different copy of the file. It means the DLL is not designed to be registered that way.
Do not use regsvr32 unless the Lexmark documentation for the exact package explicitly requires it.
Do not download the DLL separately
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- Malware or modified files
- The wrong Lexmark build
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A file with missing dependencies
- An unsigned file that does not belong to the installed device
Even a genuine standalone DLL may not repair the Driver Store, service registration, device configuration, or related Lexmark files. Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can also create a second, mismatched copy that makes troubleshooting harder.

- Open Windows Logs → Application.
- Look for an error at the time of startup.

That executable identifies what still needs repair. If it belongs to a Lexmark scanner utility, reinstall or remove that utility. If it belongs to an unknown program, run a full Microsoft Defender scan rather than restoring an unexplained DLL.
FAQ
Is dlaa2drs.dll a Windows system file?
No verified evidence shows that it ships as a native Windows component. Available records associate it with Lexmark imaging and printer/scanner software.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Which Lexmark printer uses this DLL?
The filename alone does not reliably identify one model. It is associated with an older Lexmark WIA driver family, so identify the connected device before downloading a driver.
Should I put the file in System32?
No. The file may belong in a managed Driver Store package or another Lexmark installation directory. Manual copying can create an architecture mismatch and does not restore the full driver.
Is this a Visual C++ or .NET error?
There is no evidence that those runtimes are the primary cause. Repair the Lexmark package first. Investigate a runtime only when the specific application independently documents that dependency.
What if reinstalling the driver does not work?
Check Windows Security quarantine, confirm the package matches the device and architecture, verify WIA, run DISM followed by SFC, and inspect Device Manager and Event Viewer. The name of the executable requesting the DLL is especially useful.
Can I use regsvr32?
Usually no. Use it only when documentation for the exact Lexmark component confirms that the DLL supports COM registration. A normal driver-support DLL does not become functional merely by being registered.
What is the safest permanent fix?
Remove the damaged Lexmark software and install the complete, model-specific driver package through the official Lexmark support channel. Do not substitute a downloaded DLL.
