Ordinary upgrading improves a weapon along its normal progression, while Weapon Amplification opens an additional, fifth quality level for eligible guns. Upgrades are purchased through the Gunsmith and improve the weapon’s existing characteristics; amplification is accessed through a fully upgraded Research Workstation in the Outpost and offers weapon-specific branches that can change how the gun behaves.
That distinction matters in ARC Raiders because amplification is not simply “another upgrade tier” and it is not a removable attachment. The Frozen Trail 2.0 systems also changed how the Anvil Splitter works, making one important exception to the usual upgrade-versus-mod terminology.

The short answer
Think of the two systems as different kinds of progression:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Upgrading is the conventional path. You spend materials at the Gunsmith to improve a weapon through its standard quality progression, with the numeral in the weapon name showing progress through tier IV.
- Amplification is an extra, fifth quality level. It becomes available through the fully upgraded Research Workstation in the Outpost and lets you choose weapon-specific abilities or enhancements.
- Mods are separate from both systems. A mod is an attachment that can be removed; an ordinary upgrade is a permanent improvement, while amplification is a dedicated high-level system whose path-specific reversibility is not established by the current official documentation.
The practical difference is the kind of result you should expect. An ordinary upgrade makes a gun better at what it already does. Amplification can make it behave differently or take on a new role.

How ordinary weapon upgrading works
Progression through the normal tiers
The weapon overview used by the game’s community documentation describes upgrades as a permanent way to improve most weapons. You visit the Gunsmith, spend the required materials, and advance the weapon’s standard tier. The numeral attached to the weapon name represents that upgrade progress, up to tier IV in the ordinary progression.
“Permanent” here means the change is part of the weapon’s progression rather than an attachment you can remove between raids. The exact improvement depends on the weapon. One gun may gain a more useful handling or performance characteristic, while another may receive a different type of statistical improvement. The system is not presented as a universal, identical percentage increase for every firearm.
What an upgrade is—and is not
An upgrade preserves the weapon’s basic identity. A sidearm remains that sidearm, an assault weapon remains an assault weapon, and the normal tier path does not turn one model into a fundamentally different gun. It is best understood as refining the existing specification.

A weapon marked with a standard tier value is showing ordinary upgrade progress. Amplification adds a separate fifth quality level rather than replacing the ordinary label with a new version of the same scale.
What Weapon Amplification adds
A fifth quality level
In its official Frozen Trail First Look: Content highlights from October 8, published September 23, 2026, the ARC Raiders Team described amplification as access to “a fifth quality level for a range of guns” through the fully upgraded Research Workstation in the Outpost.
That wording is important. Amplification sits beyond the standard progression instead of being another Gunsmith purchase in the same sequence. It is an additional system for weapons that are eligible for one of the available amplification paths.
Access through the Outpost Research Workstation
The access requirement named by Embark is a fully upgraded Research Workstation in your Outpost. The Gunsmith handles ordinary weapon upgrades; the Research Workstation is the station associated with amplification.

Branching choices rather than one uniform bonus
Amplification is described as a set of branching abilities and enhancements. The branches are weapon-specific, so there is no single “amplified weapon” bonus that applies identically to every model. Depending on the gun, a branch can change its firing behavior, its combat role, or the way it is built for a particular situation.
Embark’s launch examples show the intended range: a fully automatic Burletta, a scoped Renegade, and an incendiary Rattler with a 64-round magazine. Those examples are more informative than a generic damage increase because they show amplification altering how a weapon is used.
Weapon amplification and upgrading compared
| Comparison point | Ordinary upgrading | Weapon Amplification |
|---|---|---|
| Position in progression | Normal quality progression, represented by the weapon’s tier numeral through tier IV. | An additional fifth quality level for eligible weapons. |
| Where you use it | Gunsmith. | Fully upgraded Research Workstation in the Outpost. |
| Primary effect | Improves characteristics along the weapon’s existing design. | Unlocks weapon-specific branches that can alter behavior or role. |
| Scope | Most weapons have a standard upgrade path, with the exact benefit varying by model. | Only eligible weapons have amplification options; the announced initial rollout covered 15 weapons. |
| Relationship to attachments | Not a removable mod; it is part of the weapon’s progression. | Not a removable mod slot or ordinary attachment. The official material does not establish one universal reversal rule for every amplification choice. |
What the examples tell you about amplified weapons
Burletta: changing the firing role
Embark’s example of a fully automatic Burletta illustrates a behavior change rather than a simple numerical improvement. The relevant question for a player is not only whether the weapon’s statistics rise, but whether the branch makes the Burletta function differently in a fight. A choice that changes the firing mode can affect ammunition use, recoil management, trigger discipline, and the distances at which the weapon feels practical.
The example does not establish a universal damage value or a performance benchmark. It establishes the design intent: amplification can change the way a named weapon is operated.
Renegade: changing how the weapon is used
The scoped Renegade demonstrates that an amplification branch can push a weapon toward a more specialized role. A scope changes how you acquire targets and what situations the weapon is built to handle. That is qualitatively different from simply making the unscoped version a little stronger.
Use this example as a decision cue: if you prefer a weapon’s original handling and sight picture, an ordinary upgrade may be the more predictable investment. If you want the model to fill a more specialized role, its amplification branch is the system to investigate.
Rattler: changing capacity and ammunition behavior
Embark also cited an incendiary Rattler with a 64-round magazine. The example combines a different ammunition effect with a larger stated capacity, showing that amplification can affect both what the weapon does to a target and how long it can fire before reloading.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIt does not mean every amplified gun receives a 64-round magazine, and it should not be read as a general capacity rule. The number belongs to the cited Rattler example.

How mods fit into the picture
Removable weapon mods occupy a third category. The weapon overview distinguishes them from permanent upgrades: a mod is an attachment you can take off or replace, whereas an upgrade changes the weapon’s progression.
Amplification should not be treated as a fancy name for a mod. It is tied to the Research Workstation, uses weapon-specific branches, and belongs to the weapon’s amplification system. A player choosing an amplification path is making a progression decision, not merely swapping an attachment before the next raid.
This distinction prevents a common mistake: seeing a new effect and assuming it can be removed in the same way as a sight or other conventional attachment. The current official information does not promise that every amplification choice can be reversed, so check the in-game confirmation screen for the specific branch before committing resources.

The Anvil Splitter exception in Frozen Trail 2.0
What changed on October 8, 2026
Frozen Trail 2.0 changed the status of the Anvil Splitter. It is no longer usable as an Anvil mod. Instead, it is an improved upgrade option for the Amplified Anvil.
This is a version-specific change to the Anvil system, not evidence that all mods have become upgrades or that every amplification path works the same way. The update also removed the Anvil’s Tech Mod slot.
What to do with spare Splitters
The 2.0 notes state that spare Anvil Splitters can be sold or recycled into Amplified Fragments. Those fragments are used to repair amplified weapons. If you have Splitters left over after the change, their value is therefore no longer tied to filling the removed Tech Mod slot.
Because this exception affects a named item and a named weapon, do not generalize it to other guns. For ordinary weapons, continue to distinguish removable mods from permanent upgrades and amplification branches.
How to approach the systems in practice
Step 1: Identify the result you want
Before spending materials, decide whether you want a stronger version of the current gun or a different way to use it. If the answer is “the same weapon, but more capable,” start with the ordinary upgrade path. If the answer is “I want this model to fire, aim, or function differently,” look for an amplification branch.

Step 2: Use the correct station
- For standard progression, go to the Gunsmith and inspect the weapon’s next tier and material requirements.
- For amplification, go to the Research Workstation in the Outpost. The workstation must be fully upgraded before the fifth-quality-level system is available.
- If the weapon has no amplification entry, verify that it is one of the eligible models in the current game version rather than assuming that every tier-IV gun can be amplified.
Step 3: Read the branch description
Amplification choices are weapon-specific. Read what the branch changes before selecting it, paying attention to firing behavior, sights, ammunition effects, capacity, and any other role-defining description shown by the game. Do not infer that a branch is a generic stat package from its quality level alone.
Step 4: Keep mods separate in your planning
After choosing an upgrade or amplification path, evaluate removable mods as a separate loadout decision. A mod can be changed for a different raid or play style; the progression choice should be judged as part of the weapon’s longer-term configuration.
Step 5: Confirm the commitment rules shown in-game
The official sources reviewed for Frozen Trail 2.0 do not establish a universal rule for reversing every amplification choice. If the confirmation screen warns that a branch is irreversible, treat that warning as decisive. If it offers a reset or replacement option, note the stated cost and restrictions before confirming.

Mistake: treating tier IV as amplification
Symptom: You reach the highest numeral in the normal progression and assume the gun is already amplified.
Fix: Tier IV belongs to ordinary upgrading. Amplification is the separate fifth quality level accessed through the fully upgraded Research Workstation.
Mistake: looking for amplification at the Gunsmith
Symptom: The Gunsmith shows normal upgrade options but no branch choices.

Fix: Move to the Outpost Research Workstation and confirm that it is fully upgraded. The two systems use different stations.
Mistake: assuming every weapon has a branch
Symptom: A fully upgraded weapon has no amplification option.
Fix: Amplification launched for a limited set of weapons. Check current eligibility rather than treating the announced 15-weapon rollout as a universal rule.
Mistake: treating amplification as a removable attachment
Symptom: You expect to detach an amplification effect like a conventional weapon mod.
Fix: Read the branch confirmation and current in-game rules. Amplification is a progression system, not a standard mod slot, and the official material does not provide one reversal policy for every path.
Mistake: using old Anvil information
Symptom: You search for an Anvil Tech Mod slot or try to install an Anvil Splitter as before.
Fix: Frozen Trail 2.0 removed the Tech Mod slot and changed the Splitter into an improved upgrade option for the Amplified Anvil. Sell spare Splitters or recycle them into Amplified Fragments for repairing amplified weapons.

Which system should you prioritize?
| Your goal | Best place to start | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Make a familiar gun more effective without changing its identity | Ordinary upgrading at the Gunsmith | It improves the weapon along its established progression. |
| Give a weapon a different firing, aiming, ammunition, or combat role | Amplification at the Research Workstation | Its branches can alter behavior rather than applying one uniform bonus. |
| Customize a loadout for a single raid | Removable mods | Attachments can be changed without confusing them with progression choices. |
| Use an Anvil Splitter after Frozen Trail 2.0 | Amplified Anvil upgrade or resource conversion | The Splitter is no longer an Anvil mod; spares can be sold or recycled into repair fragments. |
Bottom line for ARC Raiders players
Use upgrading when you want a better version of the weapon you already understand. Use amplification when you are deliberately choosing a new behavior or role for an eligible weapon. Keep removable mods in their own category, and treat the Anvil Splitter’s Frozen Trail 2.0 change as a specific exception rather than a redefinition of the whole system.
