If Windows reports that weatherlink.dll is missing, cannot be loaded, or was not found, identify the application that requested weatherlink.dll before repairing Windows or downloading anything.
weatherlink.dll is not a documented Windows system DLL. The same filename has been associated with older Virtual Weather Station software, 01dB dBTrait 6, Hardata Dinesat Radio 9, and potentially other third-party applications. The correct fix is normally to repair or reinstall the application that owns the file.
Which fix applies to you
Use this order:
- The error appears when one particular program starts: repair or reinstall that program from its original installer or current vendor source.
- The program was moved to a new computer or restored from backup: reinstall it rather than copying only the executable and DLL.
- The file existed until antivirus removed it: inspect quarantine, then repair the application.
- The error says “specified module could not be found” even though the DLL exists: repair missing companion libraries or runtimes.
- The file is present but Windows rejects it: check its location, architecture, blocking status, and application compatibility.
- Several unrelated programs fail or Windows itself is unstable: use DISM and SFC as secondary Windows-integrity checks.
Do not begin by copying a downloaded DLL into System32.

1. Identify the application that owns weatherlink.dll
The filename alone is not enough. Start by recording the program that launches immediately before the message appears.
Check the shortcut
- Right-click the program’s shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, read Target and Start in.
- Note the executable name and its folder.
- If available, select Open File Location.
Look for an application-specific folder containing weatherlink.dll. A file beside vws.exe, a dBTrait executable, or a Dinesat executable belongs to that application context. It does not automatically belong to Davis WeatherLink.
Search the computer without downloading anything
- Press Windows key + E.
- Select This PC.
- Search for
weatherlink.dll. - Record every result’s complete path.
- Also search for the executable named in the shortcut or error message.
A normal application DLL is usually beside the executable that loads it, or in a subfolder belonging to that application. A copy in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 should not be assumed to be legitimate merely because it has the right name.
Also check Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10. Search for the program name, then note its publisher and uninstall entry.

Preserve the program’s data first. Weather records, configurations, templates, databases, licenses, and device settings may be stored outside the installation folder.
Try the application’s own repair option
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and launch the program.
If the application has its own maintenance utility, open it from the Start menu or installation folder and choose Repair, Verify, or Restore files.
Reinstall from a trusted source
If repair is unavailable or fails:
- Back up the application’s data and configuration.
- Download the installer from the application developer’s official support page, or use the original installation media.
- Close the application.
- Uninstall it from Settings > Apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the same product, using the architecture and version appropriate for the computer.
- Restart again.
- Launch the application and reconnect any required hardware.
For Davis WeatherLink, use Davis’s official computer-software download or update route rather than a generic DLL site. Davis’s older Windows documentation describes installation media, USB and serial data-logger support, USBXPress and Bridge drivers, and historical .NET requirements. Those details apply to that older edition and should not be assumed to describe every current release.

If the affected program is abandoned, use its original media or a verified backup. Do not substitute a file from another product with the same basename.

How to tell it worked: the application opens without the weatherlink.dll message, and its data and connected devices remain available. If the same error returns immediately, the installer may be missing a dependency, the antivirus may be removing the file, or you may have identified the wrong program.
3. Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a legitimate old DLL, particularly when the application is obsolete or the file has no modern signature.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the error began.
- Expand any entry referring to the affected application or
weatherlink.dll. - Restore the file only if the application, folder, and installer are trusted and correctly identified.
- Immediately repair or reinstall the application.
Do not broadly disable antivirus protection or create an exclusion for an unknown DLL. If the file appeared in an unexpected directory, changed unexpectedly, or triggered a security alert, run a full Microsoft Defender scan. An offline scan is appropriate when tampering or malware is suspected.
4. Check for a missing dependency
“The specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency used by weatherlink.dll is missing, not necessarily that weatherlink.dll itself is absent.
Use the affected application’s documentation or installer to identify required:
- Companion DLLs
- Device drivers
- .NET components
- Visual C++ runtime packages
- USB or serial communication drivers
Do not install Visual C++ merely because the error mentions a DLL. If the application specifically requires it, install the Microsoft package matching the application architecture. A 32-bit application generally needs the x86 runtime even on 64-bit Windows. Older Visual C++ runtime versions may need to remain installed beside newer versions.

Avoid obtaining individual runtime files from DLL download sites. Use Microsoft’s Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
Check Windows optional components
Some older applications require a Windows feature such as .NET Framework 3.5.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review the application’s documentation before enabling anything.
- Select the required feature.
- Select OK and restart if prompted.
Do not enable a feature simply because it sounds related. The parent application must identify the requirement.
Update or reinstall device drivers
If the program communicates with a weather station, USB adapter, serial interface, or measurement device:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Ports (COM & LPT), Universal Serial Bus controllers, or the category named by the device.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers, or install the driver supplied by the hardware vendor.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If the device has a warning icon, uninstalling the device and reinstalling its official driver may be appropriate. Record the device model and COM port first.

A commonly indexed weatherlink.dll sample is reported as 32-bit, but that does not prove every file with this name is the same binary.
Do not mix:
- A 32-bit DLL with an unrelated 64-bit application
- A file from one product with another product
- A DLL copied from another computer without its companion files
- A newer or older binary solely because the filename matches
If the file is present:
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- On General, look for an Unblock checkbox or security message.
- If the file came from a trusted installer and is blocked, select Unblock, then Apply.
- Open the Details tab and record available version information.
- Confirm that the file is in the expected application directory.
- Run the application’s repair or reinstall process.
Public records list one 32-bit sample at roughly 164 KB, but those details are third-party metadata, not an official signature or a reliable identification method.

6. Do not register or copy the DLL blindly
Do not copy weatherlink.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Private application DLLs normally belong beside the executable that loads them.
Do not run:
regsvr32 weatherlink.dll
just because the file ends in .dll. regsvr32 applies to DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Runtime and private application DLLs do not necessarily support registration. Microsoft documents the command’s intended use in its regsvr32 documentation.

weatherlink.dll is associated with third-party software, so Windows component repair is a secondary step. Use it when multiple applications are failing, Windows servicing is damaged, or other protected system files show errors.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Run Windows Update and restart again if updates are pending.
Microsoft documents DISM repair and System File Checker. These commands repair Windows components and protected resources. They will not normally restore a third-party application DLL.

8. If the error still remains
Collect this information before contacting the software vendor:
- Complete error text
- Program executable name
- Full path where
weatherlink.dllis expected - Windows 10 or Windows 11 edition
- Application version
- Whether the program was moved, updated, restored, or uninstalled
- Whether antivirus quarantined anything
- Whether the DLL is present
- Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Any companion device or driver involved
If the failure began immediately after a recent system change and a restore point exists, System Restore may be reasonable:

- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the failure.
- Review affected programs.
- Start the restore only after backing up current data.
System Restore does not identify the owning application and is not a substitute for reinstalling it.
FAQ
Is weatherlink.dll part of Windows?
No reliable evidence identifies it as a protected Windows system DLL. Treat it as a private file belonging to a third-party application.
Is weatherlink.dll definitely part of Davis WeatherLink?
Not necessarily. Davis WeatherLink is genuine Windows software, but the available official documentation does not establish that this specific DLL ships with every WeatherLink release. Identify the executable and folder first.
Can I download weatherlink.dll from the internet?
Avoid random DLL download sites. The file may be malicious, corrupted, the wrong architecture, or from a different application. Use the owning application’s official installer or original media.
Should I copy it into System32?
No. Copying an application DLL into a Windows system directory can create a second problem and does not restore the application’s missing dependencies.
Will SFC fix it?
Usually not. SFC checks protected Windows resources, while weatherlink.dll is associated with third-party applications. Repair the owning application first.
