Neither phone nor computer is universally better for YouTube Live. Choose mobile for quick, on-location streams if your channel meets YouTube’s mobile requirements; choose the computer webcam route for a simple fixed setup; and choose an encoder for gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, or external production gear. YouTube’s direct computer option is called webcam streaming, which is different from using a browser-based production studio or encoder software.
Should I livestream from my phone or my computer?
Start with what you need to show and where you will be. YouTube describes mobile streaming as suited to vlogging and quick updates, while webcam streaming is a quick way to go live from a computer. An encoder is the better fit when the stream needs screen capture, gameplay, overlays, connected audio or video hardware, or a more involved production.
| Route | Best fit | Basic setup | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mobile app | Vlogging and quick updates from a phone or tablet | Supported phone or tablet and the YouTube app | Has additional mobile eligibility and device requirements. |
| Computer webcam | A quick stream from a computer | Computer and webcam | Direct webcam workflow; suited to a fixed computer setup. |
| Encoder | Gameplay, screen sharing, overlays, external hardware, or multi-camera production | Software or hardware encoder; audio/video peripherals as needed | Offers the most production flexibility of these routes, but requires configuring the production setup. |
These are workflow differences, not guarantees of better image quality, reliability, reach, or latency. Those depend on equipment, network, lighting, audio, and setup. YouTube says beginners do not need expensive equipment to start; its live-streaming tips recommend practicing with a test stream.
Is it better to go live on YouTube from a phone or a webcam?
Choose mobile for a stream that needs to move with you
A phone or tablet is a natural fit when you want to broadcast from the scene or make a quick update without building a computer production. That mobility is an inference from the device form factor and YouTube’s stated mobile use cases, not a guarantee about network performance or stream quality.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Choose a webcam for a simple computer-based stream
YouTube’s direct webcam method is for going live from a computer and requires a webcam. It is a straightforward choice when you will stay at the computer and do not need the extra production controls of an encoder. A USB webcam for YouTube live streaming is optional equipment for this route; YouTube’s guidance does not endorse a particular brand or model.
Choose an encoder when the content or production calls for it
YouTube describes encoder workflows for broadcasting gameplay or a computer screen, adding overlays, using external microphones, cameras or preamps, and managing events with several cameras and microphones. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance recommends preparing and checking the stream before an event and monitoring audio and video quality.

- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
What do I need to live stream on YouTube from mobile?
YouTube’s mobile help page lists these requirements: at least 50 subscribers, a channel verified for live streaming, no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days, and a supported device running Android 8.0 or later or iOS 8 or later. These are platform rules, which can change, so check YouTube’s current mobile eligibility page before relying on them.
- Verify your channel and confirm live streaming is enabled.
- Check that the channel has no live-stream restriction within the previous 90 days.
- Meet the mobile subscriber threshold and use a supported device.
- If this is your first time going live, allow up to 24 hours for YouTube to enable the feature.
YouTube’s general live-stream guidance also requires channel verification and no live-stream restriction in the prior 90 days. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours for computer and encoder workflows as well.

How does a computer webcam stream differ from an encoder?
The webcam route is YouTube’s direct computer option: use a computer with a webcam for a quick stream. An encoder is a separate production workflow. You connect and configure the software or hardware encoder and any peripherals you need, then use it to send the prepared video and audio to YouTube. Choose the encoder route when you need screen sharing, gameplay capture, overlays, external gear, or multiple cameras and microphones—not simply because the stream is on a computer.
Can I stream vertically and horizontally at the same time?
Yes. YouTube’s live-streaming guide says Live Control Room can create horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 versions together by default. The vertical version is center-cropped unless you select another layout; adjust vertical layout options in the editing canvas. YouTube says vertical streams display full-screen on mobile and may be discoverable in the Shorts feed.

For dual streaming through a third-party encoder, YouTube directs creators to choose RTMP(S), select the second stream key for the vertical stream, match each format and its content to the corresponding key, and start the stream from Studio. You cannot add the vertical format after a stream has started. These are format and distribution choices, not a phone-versus-computer distinction; your device alone does not determine which live features are available.

Practical setup checks before going live
For a mobile stream
- Confirm the channel and device meet the current mobile eligibility rules.
- Decide whether the stream should be vertical, horizontal, or dual-format before starting.
- Run a short test stream so you can check framing, audio, and the connection from the place you plan to broadcast.
For a webcam stream
- Confirm the computer has a working webcam and that YouTube’s general live-stream requirements are met.
- Check framing and audio before the public stream; use a test stream to practice.
For an encoder production
- Connect and configure the encoder and any microphones, cameras, or headsets before the event.
- Prepare and check the stream in advance, and monitor audio and video quality while live.
- If dual streaming, configure both formats and their matching stream keys before starting; vertical format cannot be added after the stream is underway.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube channel using uploaded videos rather than a live camera or an on-location broadcast, StreamNeo is a different option from phone, webcam, and encoder workflows. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer, OBS, or home connection needs to stay on.
