How to Stream an Esports Tournament with Multiple Cameras

A practical guide to planning camera feeds, switching views, keeping audio coherent, and testing a tournament stream before it goes live.

To stream an esports tournament with multiple cameras, bring gameplay, player or caster cameras, graphics, and audio into one production setup; switch between prepared views in OBS or a hardware switcher; then send the finished program feed to YouTube. A hardware switcher is optional. The right setup depends on the game’s observer options, available camera feeds, equipment, venue network, and crew.

Plan the shots before choosing equipment

Start with a source list and give every feed a clear job. A typical small production might include:

  • Game view: game capture or an in-game observer feed, if the game and event provide one.
  • Casters or analysts: a camera for commentary, interviews, or analysis.
  • Player or team views: cameras where they add useful context to the broadcast.
  • Venue view: a wide shot that can cover transitions or serve as a fallback.
  • Graphics: score, team names, bracket information, or other event overlays.
  • Remote feeds: any contribution sent from another location.

Name sources for what they show—for example, “game observer,” “casters,” and “team wide”—rather than leaving generic device names in the production. Decide which shots deserve their own scenes and which should appear together in picture-in-picture or split-screen layouts.

There is no universal camera count or requirement to show every player. Whether a game offers a dedicated observer view, whether player feeds are available, and what permissions apply depend on the game and event. Design the show around the views you can actually obtain and the moments the audience needs to follow.

Choose how cameras connect to the production

Approach Good fit Main trade-off
USB cameras with OBS Small, desk-based, or lower-complexity productions USB bandwidth and computer resources can limit how many feeds run reliably at once.
HDMI cameras with capture devices or a switcher Events with multiple HDMI sources or dedicated operators Requires additional hardware, cabling, and setup; a switcher can provide physical controls and monitoring.
Network cameras with NDI or another supported network output Rigs with suitable local network infrastructure Camera feeds travel over the network, so network performance becomes part of the production’s reliability planning.

These are workflow options described in the OBSBOT multi-camera guide, a manufacturer guide rather than an independent comparison. Check the capabilities of your specific cameras, capture devices, software, and network before building the rig.

USB cameras and OBS

For a basic computer-based setup, add each USB camera as a source in OBS and compose or switch between scenes. Confirm that the computer and USB controller can handle the active feeds together; a camera that works alone may not behave the same way alongside several other sources.

HDMI cameras and a hardware switcher

Connect HDMI cameras through capture devices or a dedicated switcher. A hardware switcher can be useful when several HDMI sources, fast physical cuts, or dedicated monitoring and operators are part of the show, but it is not mandatory for a small production. The OBSBOT guide names the Blackmagic Design ATEM Mini Pro as an example. Verify the current model specifications and compatibility with your cameras and formats before buying; it is not a universal fit or a required component.

Network cameras

If cameras can output NDI or another format your production system supports, bring them into compatible software or hardware over the local network. This can reduce the need for a separate video cable from each camera, but makes the network a production dependency. Wired Ethernet may be a useful reliability choice where available; test the actual feeds and network under show conditions.

Build scenes and a switching plan

Prepare the views the operator will need rather than improvising every layout during the match. Depending on the game and show, that can include a main gameplay view, caster view, picture-in-picture, split-screen, and a safe wide shot.

  1. Label every source and scene. Use concise names that identify the shot, not just the device.
  2. Set up preview and program monitoring. Use preview/program or multiview features when the chosen software or switcher offers them, so the next shot can be checked before it goes live.
  3. Keep a fallback shot ready. A venue or team-wide view gives the operator a safe option if a close-up or game feed fails.
  4. Agree on shot calls. If multiple people are working the event, establish who calls the next shot and who controls switching or graphics. The appropriate staffing level depends on the production.
  5. Match sources where practical. Use consistent frame rates, resolution, aspect ratio, exposure, and white balance when equipment allows. Differences between feeds can make cuts distracting or cause format complications.

OBS supports scene-based switching. The vMix multiview documentation describes program output, multiview layouts, and configurable outputs; available functions vary by vMix edition, so check the current documentation for the edition you plan to use.

Make one deliberate program audio mix

Choose one primary microphone or mixer bus for the broadcast instead of automatically combining every camera’s microphone. Disable camera audio that is not needed, set and monitor levels, and check audio/video offset on every active angle. Before the show, switch through each view while listening for missing, doubled, or out-of-sync audio.

Connect the production to YouTube and test it

  1. Prepare the channel in advance. Set up live access and confirm the account can stream before event day; first-time activation can take time.
  2. Get the YouTube Live server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to enter these in the encoder, then connect the audio and video hardware to the software or encoder.
  3. Protect the stream key. Treat it as a credential for your broadcast and do not show it on screen or share it with people who do not need it.
  4. Run a private or unlisted test where supported. Check every source, transition, overlay, audio level and sync point, platform ingest, dropped frames, and the fallback shot.
  5. Rehearse the show flow. Test the actual sequence of gameplay, commentary, camera cuts, and graphics—not only whether each camera appears in isolation.

Do not assume a setup is reliable simply because it works once. Test the complete rig on the network and equipment you will use for the event.

When using SRT between systems

If a production sends a feed over SRT to another encoder or receiver, OBS documents adding SRT as a media source or custom stream destination. Its SRT guide says to set latency in relation to network round-trip time: the documented default is 120 ms, and the guide says latency should be at least 2.5 times the round-trip time. This is configuration guidance, not a performance guarantee for a particular network.

Troubleshoot common multi-camera problems

  • A camera works alone but fails when other feeds are active: check USB bandwidth, computer resources, capture-device capacity, and network load, as applicable. Reduce simultaneous demands or simplify the active layout, then test again.
  • A cut looks jarring or a source does not fit: check frame rate, resolution, and aspect ratio across sources, and correct exposure or white balance differences where possible.
  • Audio changes unexpectedly between shots: confirm the intended program microphone or mixer bus is primary and disable irrelevant camera microphones.
  • Audio is out of sync on one angle: check that source’s audio/video offset and verify it again while switching through the full scene.
  • A camera or game view disappears: switch to the prepared wide shot, then inspect the failed feed and its connection without leaving the program on a broken view.
  • The outgoing stream drops frames or will not connect: check the encoder’s connection to YouTube, stream URL and key, active source load, and venue network. Retest the whole path before the event resumes.
  • A remote SRT contribution has excessive delay or instability: compare the configured latency with the network round-trip time, following OBS’s guidance, and test the path under realistic conditions.

Keep a finished feed running from the cloud

Camera switching and continuous playback are different jobs. If the tournament has a finished program video that should keep looping on YouTube outside the live event, StreamNeo can run uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not select camera views or go live from a camera.

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud.

Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams uploaded media as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
