“The program can’t start because webcamui.dll is missing from your computer.” You may also see “The specified module could not be found” or “webcamui.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
webcamui.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component associated with the Windows webcam user experience. It is normally installed at %windir%System32webcamui.dll, although a 32-bit application can load related components through the 32-bit Windows subsystem.
Which fix applies to you
Use this list before changing anything:
- The error appears when Windows or several camera applications start: repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
- You use Windows 10 or Windows 11 N: install the Media Feature Pack, then restart.
- Only one application or game fails: repair or reinstall that application from its official installer or launcher.
- The file exists, but the message says “specified module could not be found”: a dependency may be missing. Do not assume
webcamui.dllitself is absent. - The problem started after antivirus activity: check Protection history for quarantine or removal.
- The camera does not work, but no DLL error appears: check camera privacy permissions and the camera driver.
- The problem began after an update or cleanup operation: install pending updates, then run the Windows repair commands below.
- The program is 32-bit on 64-bit Windows: do not replace the file with an arbitrary 32-bit or 64-bit copy. Repair Windows or reinstall the affected program instead.
Do not begin by downloading webcamui.dll from a random DLL website. A loose download may contain malware, match the wrong Windows build, use the wrong architecture, or leave the actual dependency or component-store problem untouched. The safe sources are Windows servicing, Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack where applicable, and the affected program’s official installer.
What webcamui.dll is and where it belongs
Microsoft documents webcamui.dll as part of the Microsoft-Windows-WebcamExperience package. That package supplies webcam user-experience functionality and is associated with the Media Feature Pack. The normal installed path is:

%windir%System32webcamui.dll
This is a Windows component, not a standalone webcam driver. A camera manufacturer’s driver controls the hardware; webcamui.dll belongs to Windows’ webcam experience layer.
Microsoft’s Windows 8 update manifests show separate x86 and x64 copies. Public version listings also show examples such as:

These are reference versions, not a universal checklist. Do not replace a current file merely because its version or size differs from a public listing.
Check whether the file is really missing
Press Windows key + E, select the address bar, and enter:

Look for webcamui.dll.
If it is present, right-click it, select Properties, and open the Digital Signatures tab. A normal Windows copy should have Microsoft publisher information. The presence of the file does not prove that it is healthy, correctly matched, or loadable. Continue with DISM and SFC.
You can also check the file from an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
where /r %windir% webcamui.dll
If the command finds a copy outside the expected Windows locations, do not automatically copy or delete it. An application may have its own file, or the copy may be suspicious. Repair the owning Windows component or application through supported methods.

Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the safest first repair when webcamui.dll is missing, corrupted, or reported as incompatible.

- Save your work.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete. It can remain at one percentage for a while.
- After DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Open the affected application again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
Success means SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, or that corrupted files were found and successfully repaired. If SFC says it could not fix some files, restart and run the two commands again. If the error remains, continue to the Windows Update and edition checks below.
Manually repeating SFC and DISM can make it difficult to know what changed. Outbyte PC Repair provides a scan that shows what it identifies, while repair actions require the full version. It is optional, and Windows’ built-in DISM and SFC remain the supported first-line repair.
Fix 2: Install pending updates or repair Windows through Windows Update
A failed update or damaged component-store transaction can leave a Windows file unavailable.

First install updates:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Test the application or camera again.
On supported Windows 11 installations, you can also reinstall the current Windows version without removing your applications or personal files:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.
If that option is unavailable, use the standard Windows recovery options rather than downloading a replacement DLL. Persistent system corruption may require System Restore, an in-place repair, or Windows recovery after backing up personal files.
Fix 3: Install the Media Feature Pack on Windows N
Windows 10 N and Windows 11 N omit certain media technologies. Microsoft notes that webcams and applications using camera capture may not work until the Media Feature Pack is installed.

On Windows 11 N:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Optional features.
- Select View features.
- Search for Media Feature Pack.
- Select it and choose Next, then Install.
- Restart Windows.
On Windows 10 N:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Choose Optional features.
- Select Add a feature.
- Choose Media Feature Pack, then select Install.
- Restart Windows.
After restarting, test the failing program. If it still reports webcamui.dll, repair or reinstall that application as well.

Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If only one program reports the error, the application may be damaged, using a missing dependency, or expecting a file from an older installation.
On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, use Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s local settings. Otherwise uninstall and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer or launcher.
For a game, open its official launcher and use Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of game files, depending on the launcher. If verification does not restore the program, reinstall it.
This is especially important when the message appears only for one program. A Windows system repair will not necessarily restore an application-owned dependency or fix a damaged application profile.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a file after an update, application installation, or malware-removal event.

In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type
Windows Security. - Open it and select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent entries for
webcamui.dllor the affected application. - Check the reported file path and detection details.
Restore a file only when its path, Microsoft signature, and origin are trustworthy. If the file is in an unexpected application folder or has no credible signature, leave it quarantined and repair Windows or reinstall the application from its official source. Microsoft warns that a restored detection may be detected again.
Run a scan after reviewing the event:
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Scan options.
- Run a Full scan.
- If malware is suspected, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan where available.
Fix 6: Check camera privacy settings
A camera that is blocked by privacy settings can look like a broken webcam component, but privacy settings do not normally explain every webcamui.dll loader error.
On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security > Camera.
- Turn on Camera access.
- Turn on Let apps access your camera.
- Turn on Let desktop apps access your camera if the affected program is a desktop application.
- Test the camera again.
On Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Privacy > Camera, then enable access for the device, applications, and desktop applications as needed.
If the camera remains unavailable, open Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Cameras, Imaging devices, or Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the camera.
- Choose Update driver.
- If the issue began after an update, open Properties > Driver and check whether Roll Back Driver is available.
- If necessary, choose Uninstall device, restart Windows, and allow Windows to reinstall the device.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for stale drivers, but the full version is required to install updates. It is optional; use the camera manufacturer, computer manufacturer, or Windows Update as the authoritative source, and remember that a driver reinstall does not normally restore a missing protected Windows DLL.

Do not run:
regsvr32 webcamui.dll
as a routine fix. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general command for restoring or repairing Windows components, and it may produce another error when used with a system component that does not require self-registration.
The supported repair path is Windows Update, DISM, SFC, the Media Feature Pack on N editions, or the affected application’s official repair process.
When to use System Restore or reinstall Windows
Use System Restore when:
- the problem began after a recent software or system change,
- restore points are available,
- DISM and SFC do not resolve the issue,
- and malware has been ruled out or removed.
Back up personal files first. If Windows remains damaged, use the Windows recovery environment or an in-place repair. A clean installation is the last resort for persistent corruption, failed recovery, or confirmed unauthorized system changes.

For IoT Enterprise LTSC systems, Microsoft documents Microsoft-Windows-WebcamExperience as a removable package. Restoring a removed IoT package may require reinstalling the edition, so do not remove or add packages casually.
FAQ
Is webcamui.dll a webcam driver?
No. It is part of the Windows webcam user-experience component. The camera driver is managed separately through Device Manager.
Should I copy the file into System32?
No. A loose copy can have the wrong architecture, version, signature, or dependencies. Use DISM and SFC, Windows Update, the Media Feature Pack on N editions, or the official application installer.
Why does Windows say “specified module could not be found” when the file exists?
The Windows loader may be unable to find a dependency required by webcamui.dll. The message does not prove that the named file is the only missing component.
Does a 64-bit Windows installation need the 64-bit file?
Not always. A 32-bit application may use 32-bit components even on 64-bit Windows. Do not infer the required architecture from Windows alone.
How do I verify the file?
Check %windir%System32webcamui.dll, open Properties, and review the Digital Signatures tab. Then run DISM and SFC, because a file can exist while still being damaged or mismatched.

Identify whether the error affects one application or all camera software. For one application, repair or reinstall it and inspect its full error and logs. For a system-wide failure, check Windows N media components, camera permissions, Device Manager, Windows Security, and recovery options.
