If WEBFISHING is crashing on your Steam Deck, start with SteamOS updates and a restart, then check whether the problem is a launch failure, loading crash, multiplayer crash, or device-wide instability. Valve’s steps are general Steam Deck troubleshooting—not a confirmed, universal WEBFISHING fix—and player-reported workarounds are anecdotal.
First, identify what is crashing
The reports describe different failure stages, which may have different causes. Note exactly what happens before changing settings:
- Launch failure: the game closes or returns to its Steam page shortly after you press Play.
- Loading crash: the game starts but closes or freezes while loading.
- Multiplayer crash: the game works until you join a lobby or connect to another player.
- Device-wide instability: the Deck itself freezes, restarts, or behaves unreliably outside the game.
These distinctions matter: a workaround reported for a Linux multiplayer problem does not establish a fix for a Steam Deck startup crash.
Try Valve’s general Steam Deck steps first
Valve’s Steam Deck software and troubleshooting guide recommends installing available system updates and restarting when addressing system instability. Its suggested update path is Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates; restart from the Software Updates section or use Steam > Power > Restart.

- Open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates and install any available SteamOS updates.
- Restart the Deck using Steam > Power > Restart.
- If the game remains unstable, temporarily exit or disable third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode, then restart and test again. Valve includes this as general app-instability troubleshooting; it is not a WEBFISHING-specific diagnosis.
Check WEBFISHING’s compatibility settings
Valve’s troubleshooting guide advises checking a Steam app’s Deck compatibility status and allows users to force a Steam Play compatibility tool. The same guide recommends trying the latest Proton version as general troubleshooting guidance. It does not identify a best Proton version for WEBFISHING, so treat compatibility changes as reversible tests rather than a guaranteed fix.
- In the Steam Library, open WEBFISHING’s Properties.
- Open Compatibility and, if needed, enable the option to force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Test an available Proton version, changing one setting at a time so you can tell whether it affects the crash.
For the current compatibility status, check the game’s Library page and Steam’s WEBFISHING gameplay or technical issue page. The reviewed official material does not establish a current Deck rating or a WEBFISHING-specific Proton recommendation.

If WEBFISHING fails at startup
Some players have reported resolving a startup problem by restarting Steam, while a separate historical discussion mentions a mod-loader issue after patch 1.09. These are individual reports, not reproducible tests; an old mod-loader report may no longer apply to the current game.
- If you use mods, check whether they and their loader are compatible with your installed game version. For diagnosis, try launching without them.
- Restart Steam and try launching the game again.
- If the crash continues, record whether it happens before the game window appears or later during loading. That detail is more useful than treating every failure as the same issue.
If it crashes while loading, protect your save before testing it
A community discussion suggests moving WEBFISHING files out of the game’s Godot app-data folder to test whether save data is involved. That suggestion is user-generated and Windows-path-specific; it does not establish a Steam Deck save location or a reliable Deck recovery procedure.

Do not delete save data or copy a Windows path onto the Deck. If you choose to investigate save files, first make a separate backup and make sure you know how to restore it. If you are unsure which files are safe to move or how Steam Cloud may affect them, ask Steam Support before experimenting. A save-file test is optional, carries data risk, and is not an official Deck crash fix.
If the crash happens when joining multiplayer
One Linux multiplayer discussion reports that trying GE-Proton 9-18 helped one player. That is a single community report—not a tested recommendation for Steam Deck, startup failures, or current WEBFISHING builds. It also does not establish that this Proton release is current or generally compatible.

If you decide to try an alternative compatibility tool, change only that setting, test the same multiplayer action, and switch back if the result is worse. Do not assume a result from another Linux setup will carry over to your Deck.

What is and is not confirmed
Steam lists WEBFISHING as a game by lamedeveloper and provides a developer contact on its technical support page. The store’s technical details list Windows system requirements, which do not by themselves establish Steam Deck compatibility. Official announcements and patch notes document past changes involving bugs, performance, save handling, and Steam Cloud, but do not confirm a current Deck crash fix.
