For a simple brochure site, portfolio, or service-business website, a hosted builder such as Wix or Squarespace is usually the quickest and least demanding choice. Choose self-hosted WordPress when you need control over code, hosting architecture, plugins, themes, or unusual integrations. WordPress.com sits between those options: it uses WordPress’s publishing system while bundling managed hosting and platform support.
There is no universally best platform. The right decision depends on how quickly you need to launch, who will maintain security and updates, how much customization you require, whether you sell online, and what you can spend on technical work over five years.

WordPress.com
WordPress.com is a commercial hosted service operated by Automattic. The provider runs the hosting infrastructure and offers platform support. Its support documentation says managed hosting includes updates, security, and backups, although the exact features and customization available depend on the plan.
Hosted website builders
Wix and Squarespace are all-in-one hosted builders. You edit pages in a visual interface while the provider supplies hosting, HTTPS, infrastructure monitoring, and support. You do not install WordPress, manage a server, or maintain a conventional plugin stack.
When someone asks, “Should I use Wix or WordPress?”, ask a follow-up question: do they mean WordPress.com or self-hosted WordPress.org? The answer can change the recommendation completely.
Quick decision guide
| If your priority is… | Usually choose… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Publishing a small site quickly without server work | Wix or Squarespace | Visual editing, bundled hosting, integrated support, and fewer maintenance tasks. |
| WordPress publishing with managed infrastructure | WordPress.com | You get the WordPress workflow while the provider handles core operational work. |
| Custom code, unusual integrations, or control of the PHP environment | Self-hosted WordPress.org | You control the host, files, database, themes, plugins, and deployment choices. |
| A large store with specialized operational requirements | Evaluate a specialist ecommerce platform or a carefully configured WordPress solution | The store’s catalog, tax, fulfillment, payment, and integration requirements should drive the decision. |
| A site that a nontechnical owner must maintain alone | A hosted builder or an appropriate WordPress.com plan | Routine infrastructure and security work is centralized instead of becoming the owner’s responsibility. |
How the platforms compare
| Decision axis | Hosted builder (Wix or Squarespace) | WordPress.com | Self-hosted WordPress.org |
|---|---|---|---|
| Setup and learning curve | Fast, guided setup with little or no server work. | Guided WordPress workflow; plan limits apply. | More setup and technical responsibility. |
| Hosting and maintenance | Bundled by the provider. | Managed by the provider. | Chosen and maintained by the owner or a managed host. |
| Design and code control | Limited to the platform’s editor, templates, and supported customization. | More control on paid tiers, subject to platform rules. | Broadest control over code, themes, plugins, PHP, and deployment. |
| Extensions | Wix lists more than 800 apps; Squarespace offers its own integrations. | WordPress ecosystem access varies by plan. | Broad WordPress plugin and theme ecosystem. |
| Security operations | Provider-managed HTTPS/SSL, monitoring, backups, or infrastructure controls. | Managed updates, security, backups, and support; controls vary by plan. | Owner or host handles updates, backups, hardening, monitoring, and incident response. |
| Ecommerce | Integrated commerce tools; Squarespace includes commerce features. | WooCommerce and other tools are plan-dependent. | WooCommerce or other plugins, with more configuration. |
| Migration | Provider guides exist, but export complexity varies. | WordPress.com documents migration in both directions. | Software and database are portable, but migration is owner-managed. |
| Support accountability | One provider is responsible for most of the stack. | Platform support is centralized, with plan-dependent scope. | Responsibility is divided among the host, theme author, plugin authors, and your administrator. |
Setup time and learning curve
Hosted builders
A builder normally takes you through a template, site name, domain, pages, and visual editor. You can publish without learning DNS records, database credentials, PHP versions, file permissions, or server caching. That simplicity is valuable for a local service company, personal portfolio, event page, or small publication whose priority is getting a credible site online.
The trade-off is that the editor’s concepts become your limits. A feature that is not supported by the platform may require a workaround, an approved app, custom code inside a restricted area, or a change of platform.
WordPress.com
WordPress.com removes most server setup while retaining WordPress’s posts, pages, media library, menus, taxonomies, and block-editor workflow. It is a sensible learning path if you want WordPress publishing without immediately becoming responsible for a server. Check the plan before assuming that a particular plugin, theme, code injection method, or ecommerce feature is available.
Self-hosted WordPress.org
A self-hosted launch has more moving parts:
- Choose a host that supports the current WordPress requirements and offers the PHP, database, storage, and traffic capacity your site needs.
- Register or connect a domain and configure DNS.
- Install WordPress, create administrator accounts, and remove any default content.
- Choose a maintained theme and install only the plugins required for your actual features.
- Configure HTTPS, backups, updates, caching, email delivery, spam protection, and user permissions.
- Test forms, navigation, responsive layouts, accessibility basics, analytics, and restore procedures before launch.
That work is manageable for a technically confident owner or agency, but it is not “free” simply because the WordPress software costs nothing. Your time, hosting, maintenance, and support are part of the price.

Hosting, updates, backups, and security
What hosted providers take care of
Wix documents HTTPS, 24/7 monitoring, threat prevention, and response. Squarespace documents SSL, web-application firewalls, and distributed-denial-of-service protection. WordPress.com documents automatic updates, daily malware scans, monitoring, backups, and plan-dependent security controls. These services reduce the number of operational decisions a site owner must make.
“Managed” does not mean every problem disappears. You still need strong administrator passwords, multifactor authentication where available, careful user permissions, compliant content, and a process for checking that forms, payments, and integrations continue to work after platform changes.
What self-hosting adds
Self-hosted WordPress can use equivalent protections through a capable host and disciplined maintenance, but you must arrange them. Someone must apply core, theme, and plugin updates; verify that backups actually restore; monitor uptime and malware; renew certificates and domains; remove abandoned extensions; and respond if an update breaks the site.
A managed WordPress host can perform some of this work, but “managed WordPress hosting” is not a universal specification. Compare what is included: staging, automated backups, backup retention, malware cleanup, support hours, update policies, traffic limits, and whether the host restores a full database and file system or only selected snapshots.
Design, code, plugins, and integrations
Builders provide a controlled design system. You can change layouts, colors, typography, and components quickly, but you remain inside the platform’s capabilities. Wix says its builder combines drag-and-drop editing with marketing, AI, bookings, ecommerce, SSL, monitoring, hosting, support, and more than 800 apps. Squarespace packages content hosting, domain registration, selling tools, analytics, SSL, a web-application firewall, and DDoS protection in one subscription.
WordPress.com gives you the WordPress content model and a broad ecosystem, but plan restrictions matter. A feature may require a higher tier, a specific integration, or a supported plugin.
Self-hosted WordPress offers the greatest technical freedom. You can alter theme templates, write custom plugins, connect to external systems, select PHP versions supported by your host, and build a deployment process around version control and staging. That freedom also lets incompatible or insecure code damage the site. Every additional plugin creates another update, performance, compatibility, and security dependency.

Ecommerce and transactions
For a few products, appointments, digital downloads, or donations, an integrated commerce feature may be enough. Wix includes integrated ecommerce tools, and Squarespace includes commerce features. Their advantage is fewer infrastructure decisions: the catalog, checkout, hosting, and support live in one platform.
WordPress can support ecommerce through WooCommerce and other plugins. Self-hosting offers deeper control over checkout logic, product data, shipping integrations, customer accounts, and custom back-office workflows, but you must configure and maintain those components. WordPress.com availability is plan-dependent.
Choose based on operational requirements rather than a generic claim that one platform is “best.” List your payment methods, countries, tax rules, inventory sources, fulfillment process, subscriptions, refunds, staff roles, analytics, and required integrations. If those needs dominate the project, evaluate a specialist ecommerce platform as well as WordPress and builders. The available evidence does not establish that one platform universally outperforms the others for every store.
SEO and content workflow
None of these platforms automatically earns rankings or conversions. Results depend on information architecture, useful content, page titles and descriptions, internal links, templates, performance, accessibility, structured data where appropriate, legitimate external links, analytics, and implementation quality.
Wix documents built-in SEO and analytics. Squarespace documents built-in SEO and AI-assisted SEO controls. WordPress’s extensibility can support advanced SEO workflows, but every extra configuration becomes your responsibility. A technically perfect SEO plugin cannot compensate for thin pages, confusing navigation, inaccessible content, or an unhelpful site structure.
Choose the workflow you will actually use
- Visual, occasional editing: A builder is often more comfortable for owners who publish a few pages and updates each month.
- Frequent articles or a newsroom-style site: WordPress’s posts, categories, tags, editorial roles, revisions, and media workflow may fit better.
- Custom publishing: Self-hosted WordPress is strongest when you need custom content types, APIs, memberships, or integrations and have someone to maintain them.
What does each option cost over five years?
Software price is only one part of total cost. Include domain registration and renewal, paid templates, plugins or apps, transaction fees, premium support, professional setup, maintenance labor, migration work, and the cost of downtime.

| Option | Figure reported in the comparison | Simple 60-month arithmetic | What the figure does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wix | Paid plans displayed as starting at $17 per month. | $1,020 if that monthly price stayed unchanged for 60 months. | It excludes domains, taxes, higher tiers, apps, transaction costs, and labor; prices and inclusions are volatile. |
| WordPress.com | Plans displayed as starting at $4 per month. | $240 if that monthly price stayed unchanged for 60 months. | It excludes domains, taxes, plan upgrades, premium features, and labor; the displayed comparison may not reflect current regional or billing terms. |
| Squarespace | Not stated in the supplied comparison. | Not calculable from the stated evidence. | Check current regional pricing, billing cycle, commerce fees, and included features before comparing. |
| Self-hosted WordPress.org | No single hosting price is established. | Not calculable without a host, domain, extensions, and labor assumptions. | Hosting quality, backups, premium plugins, maintenance, support, and development can change the total substantially. |
The two arithmetic examples are not five-year quotes. They illustrate why a low advertised entry price cannot be compared with a complete operating budget. For self-hosted WordPress, estimate three scenarios: owner-maintained, managed-host maintenance, and professional support for updates and incidents. Put an hourly value on your own time; otherwise the apparently cheaper option may simply be hiding labor.
Migration, export, and vendor lock-in
Moving from a builder
Builders provide migration guidance, but export complexity varies. Text and images may be transferable while page layouts, styling rules, forms, app data, bookings, memberships, redirects, analytics settings, and ecommerce records require rebuilding. Before committing, ask what you can export in a standard format and what remains dependent on the provider.

Moving to or from WordPress.com
WordPress.com documents migration in both directions. Exporting content is not the same as reproducing the exact design and behavior: theme settings, plugin-dependent features, custom code, media URLs, redirects, and integrations still need a migration plan.
Moving self-hosted WordPress
Self-hosted WordPress is portable because you control the files and database. The work is still technical: copy files and database, adjust configuration and URLs, test DNS and HTTPS, verify cron jobs and email, check redirects, and test every important form and transaction. Keep the old site available until the new installation has been validated.
Protect yourself before launch
- Maintain a copy of your original content, media, domain records, and analytics configuration.
- Use descriptive, platform-independent URLs where possible.
- Document forms, integrations, payment accounts, redirects, and administrator access.
- Ask prospective providers about export formats, cancellation, data retention, and restoration access.
Support and accountability when something breaks
With Wix or Squarespace, one provider controls most of the stack, so support has a clearer place to start. WordPress.com similarly centralizes platform support, although the scope depends on the plan.
With self-hosted WordPress, an outage may involve the host, DNS provider, domain registrar, theme, plugin, payment gateway, email service, or custom code. The flexibility is valuable, but you or your developer must identify which layer failed and coordinate the fix. If the site generates leads or sales, budget for an explicit incident-response arrangement rather than assuming a plugin author will solve a site-specific conflict.
Do you need a developer?
You probably do not for a basic hosted site
A brochure site with a home page, services, contact page, privacy information, and a few images can usually be created by its owner in a hosted builder. You may still want professional help for copy, branding, accessibility, analytics, or conversion improvements.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
You may need one for self-hosting or advanced features
Consider a developer or experienced administrator when you need custom integrations, membership rules, multilingual architecture, a complex store, performance tuning, automated deployments, custom data models, or dependable maintenance. The need is not a failure of WordPress; it is the cost of choosing a platform that exposes more of its underlying machinery.
Platform-specific launch checklists
Hosted builder checklist
- List the pages, forms, products, integrations, and staff accounts you need.
- Confirm that the selected plan includes those functions, storage, analytics, and domain connection.
- Build the navigation and mobile layouts before polishing visual details.
- Connect the domain, verify HTTPS, configure forms and email notifications, and test spam controls.
- Review page titles, descriptions, headings, image alternatives, redirects, analytics, and cookie or privacy requirements.
- Export or document content and settings before launch so a future migration is possible.
WordPress.com checklist
- Choose a plan after checking plugin, theme, ecommerce, storage, and support limits.
- Set administrator roles and multifactor authentication where available.
- Configure the theme, menus, posts, pages, media, forms, SEO settings, and analytics.
- Confirm that automatic updates, backups, malware scanning, and restoration options match your risk tolerance.
- Test forms, payments, embeds, redirects, email delivery, and mobile presentation.
Self-hosted WordPress checklist
- Evaluate hosting support, PHP and database versions, staging, backups, traffic limits, malware response, and support terms.
- Install WordPress over HTTPS and create separate administrator accounts for each person.
- Select maintained themes and plugins; remove unused extensions and default accounts.
- Set update, backup, restore, caching, security, email, uptime-monitoring, and incident-response procedures.
- Test a restore on staging, then test the production site’s forms, commerce, accessibility, performance, and analytics.
- Record renewal dates, licenses, DNS settings, integrations, and who is responsible for each maintenance task.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Comparing WordPress.com with WordPress.org as if they were the same product: establish the hosting and maintenance model first.
- Choosing from the entry price alone: add renewals, extensions, payment fees, labor, support, and migration.
- Installing every plugin that looks useful: each extension adds compatibility and security risk.
- Assuming SEO is automatic: platform tools cannot replace useful content, sound structure, performance, and accessibility.
- Skipping restore tests: a backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan.
- Ignoring export rights: verify what happens to layouts, forms, store data, media, and URLs before you become dependent on a platform.
- Underestimating staff time: self-hosting transfers operational work to the owner unless a host or developer is paid to do it.
How market share should influence your decision
WordPress.com reported, citing W3Techs and updated August 6, 2026, that WordPress is used by more than 40% of all websites and 61.4% of websites using a content-management system. The same comparison reported Wix at 3.7% of all websites and Squarespace at 2.3%.
Those figures show ecosystem reach, documentation, developer familiarity, and the availability of third-party services. They do not prove that WordPress is the best choice for your site. A smaller platform can still be the better operational fit if it lets your team publish, secure, and support the site reliably.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFinal recommendation for common 2026 scenarios
Choose Wix or Squarespace when speed and simplicity win
Use a hosted builder when the site is mainly informational, the owner prefers visual editing, the launch deadline is short, and no one wants to maintain plugins or server settings. Confirm the required apps, export options, commerce terms, and current plan price first.
Choose WordPress.com when you want WordPress without server ownership
WordPress.com is the middle path for people who prefer WordPress’s content workflow and ecosystem but want managed hosting, updates, security, backups, and platform support. Check plan-specific limits before designing around a plugin or custom code feature.
Choose self-hosted WordPress.org when control is worth the work
Self-hosting is appropriate when custom code, unusual integrations, advanced content models, hosting choice, or long-term portability matter more than a guided setup. Either have the skills to maintain it or budget for a managed host and professional support.
Make the decision by matching responsibility to capability. A platform is successful when your team can keep it secure, publish consistently, recover from failure, and change direction without an unacceptable cost—not merely when it has the longest feature list.
