The 60-second answer
websocket.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows API library. It belongs to the WebSocket Protocol Component API, which applications use for WebSocket handshakes, protocol validation, framing, and stream parsing. Microsoft documents this API for Windows 8 and later, including Windows 10 and Windows 11.

What is websocket.dll?
websocket.dll is the dynamically linked library for Microsoft’s WebSocket Protocol Component API. Applications can use it through the websocket.h API header and Websocket.lib import library.
The library handles protocol-related work such as:
- Processing WebSocket handshakes
- Validating WebSocket protocol data
- Parsing streams
- Building and interpreting WebSocket frames
It does not perform ordinary network I/O, proxy handling, authentication, or redirection by itself.
This is a Windows component, not a Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable file, .NET assembly, or DirectX runtime file. Microsoft documents the WebSocket API separately from the Visual C++ Redistributable packages, which provide MSVC and C/C++ runtime libraries.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
On 64-bit Windows, 64-bit system DLLs are normally stored under:
%windir%System32
The 32-bit system equivalents are normally accessed through:
%windir%SysWOW64
Those names are counterintuitive. SysWOW64 contains the 32-bit system files used by 32-bit applications on 64-bit Windows. Do not fix the problem by copying files between these directories. Windows uses file-system redirection to provide the correct architecture to each program. Microsoft explains this behavior in its file-system redirector documentation.
What does the error actually mean?
The message usually means that Windows could not load the library required by an application. It does not always prove that websocket.dll itself is absent.

For example, “module was not found” can mean:
- The named DLL is missing.
- The DLL exists but is damaged.
- A dependency required by the DLL is missing.
- The application is using the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- The application installation points to an invalid or outdated file.
- Antivirus software quarantined a required file.
- Windows component storage or protected system files are corrupted.
The exact wording helps, but the affected program and the full path shown in the error are more important.
First check: one program or several?
Before changing Windows files, determine the scope of the failure.
If only one program fails
A single failing game, utility, plugin, developer tool, or R package usually points to an application installation, compatibility, or dependency problem. Use the program’s repair option, launcher verification feature, or official installer.
Do not assume that the application should ship its own copy of Microsoft’s system websocket.dll. A third-party program may use the Windows library through native Windows APIs.
If several programs fail
Multiple unrelated programs failing at the same time points more strongly to Windows component corruption, an interrupted update, disk damage, antivirus quarantine, or broader system damage. Start with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
Check the full path
If the error identifies a file inside an application folder, do not immediately replace the Windows copy. If it points to a Windows system directory, the Windows servicing steps below are more appropriate.
A file with the same name in an application folder may be a separate product file. The path, architecture, and application that reported the error must be verified before repair.
Fix 1: install Windows updates and restart
A failed or incomplete update can leave Windows components inconsistent.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- On Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if it does not explicitly require a restart.
- Try the affected application again.
If the error remains, run DISM and SFC. Microsoft includes these tools in its guidance for repairing Windows Update corruption.
Fix 2: repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected Windows files and restores damaged copies from that repaired store.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart the computer.
- Test the program again.
Microsoft documents this DISM and SFC repair sequence.
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, install pending Windows updates and retry. If it still fails, preserve the exact error code and consult Microsoft’s repair guidance or use an appropriate Windows installation source. Do not substitute a downloaded DLL.
Recommended Free Tools
SFC may report that it repaired files, found no integrity violations, or could not repair some files. If it repaired files, reboot before testing. If it found no violations but the application still fails, continue with application and dependency checks.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair can show what it finds in its free scan, while repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and Windows servicing remains the appropriate first-line repair.
Fix 3: repair or reinstall the affected application
If one program still reports the error, repair that program rather than copying a system DLL into its installation folder.
Use the Windows app repair option
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu, or select the application and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available.
- Start the program again.
If Repair does not work, return to the same screen and use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings or local data.

- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Change, Repair, or a similar option.
- Complete the installer steps.
- Restart the application.
Verify or reinstall through the official launcher
For a game or launcher:
- Open the official launcher.
- Find the installed game or program.
- Open its settings or management menu.
- Choose Verify, Scan and repair, or Repair files.
- Wait for the process to complete.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and install it again using the developer’s official installer. Back up settings or saved data first when the application stores them locally.
Fix 4: check antivirus quarantine
Windows Security may have quarantined a file after an update, installation, or malware-removal event.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand an event related to the affected application or Windows file.
- Confirm the detected path before taking action.
Do not restore a file merely because its name is websocket.dll. Restore it only when the path and source clearly identify a genuine Windows file or a trusted application file, and only after confirming the detection is a false positive. Microsoft explains the risks and limitations of Protection History.
If the file repeatedly disappears, run a Full scan. For a persistent or suspicious infection, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from Virus & threat protection. Microsoft describes both scan types in its virus and threat protection guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 5: check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit program and a 64-bit program do not load system libraries in exactly the same way.
A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows normally uses the 32-bit system view provided through WOW64. A 64-bit application requires the 64-bit system component. Problems can occur when:
- A 32-bit program is given a manually copied 64-bit DLL.
- A 64-bit program finds an incompatible application-local copy.
- An installer was interrupted and placed files in the wrong location.
- A plugin was built for a different architecture than its host application.
Check the affected program’s documentation for its required architecture. Do not copy websocket.dll between System32, SysWOW64, and application folders.
If the error says the file is “not designed to run on Windows” or includes a status code, preserve that exact message. It can indicate corruption, a bad replacement, an architecture mismatch, or a missing dependency.
Fix 6: update related drivers only when evidence points there
A driver is not the normal source of websocket.dll. Do not use Device Manager as a substitute for Windows component repair. However, if the same application began failing after a network adapter, graphics, storage, or chipset problem, check the relevant driver.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the hardware category related to the problem.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties and review the Device status message.
- Select the Driver tab.
- Use Update Driver, Roll Back Driver, or Uninstall Device only when the symptoms support that action.
- Restart Windows.
Prefer the hardware manufacturer’s official driver or Windows Update. Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers it identifies in its free scan, while installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace repairing the affected application.
Should you run regsvr32 websocket.dll?
No. regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents regsvr32 as a registration tool for those component DLLs.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →There is no Microsoft instruction to register websocket.dll. Running this command is not an appropriate repair:
regsvr32 websocket.dll
A Windows API library does not become usable merely because it was registered. If the problem is corruption, a missing dependency, or an architecture mismatch, regsvr32 does not address the cause.
Never download or copy a replacement DLL
Avoid third-party DLL download sites and random file attachments. A replacement may have:
- The wrong Windows build
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- An invalid signature
- Missing dependencies
- Malware or tampering
- A location that Windows does not use
The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM and SFC, Windows recovery or installation repair, and the affected application’s official installer. Do not disable antivirus to install an unverified DLL.
When should you use System Restore or Windows repair?
Use System Restore when the problem clearly began after a recent driver, update, cleanup utility, or software change and normal repair did not help.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure began.
- Review the affected programs and updates.
- Start the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can remove recently installed applications, drivers, and updates. It does not replace diagnosis and should not be the first step.
If the file repeatedly disappears, DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows, or several system components are failing, back up important data and consider a Windows repair installation or another supported recovery option. A disk-health problem or malware infection may need attention before Windows is repaired.
FAQ
Is websocket.dll malware?
The name belongs to a genuine Microsoft Windows component, but any file with that name should be judged by its path, signature, and source. A copy in an unexpected folder may belong to another program or may be unsafe.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Is websocket.dll part of Visual C++?
No. It is a Windows WebSocket API library. Visual C++ Redistributables are relevant only when the error identifies an MSVC or C/C++ runtime file as the missing dependency.
Does Windows 7 include this API?
Microsoft’s documented minimum client version is Windows 8, with Windows Server 2012 as the documented minimum server version. Do not treat Windows 7 as equivalent to later Windows versions for this API.
What if SFC and DISM report no problems?
Repair or reinstall the one affected application, verify its files, check its architecture, inspect the full error path, and investigate other dependencies. “Module was not found” may identify a dependency rather than websocket.dll itself.
Can I install a Windows Feature to restore it?
Windows Features are not the normal source of this API library. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, or supported Windows repair instead.
