What happened?
On November 8, 2024, Game Developer reported that nine NetEase developers had reportedly been arrested, citing Bloomberg and Chinese outlet Leifeng. The coverage connected NetEase to games including Marvel Rivals, but did not establish that all nine people worked directly on that game. Game Developer’s report described the claims as allegations, not court findings.

Shacknews likewise reported that two executives and seven employees had been detained and dismissed. It described the people as connected to different parts of NetEase and its games, and said the effect on development was then unknown. That account does not show that the Marvel Rivals team collectively was involved. Shacknews’ report was published in November 2024.

What did NetEase say about the allegations?
In a statement to PC Gamer published November 11, 2024, a NetEase representative said the company had identified two instances of suspected fraud involving employees in its Chinese domestic market operations. The representative said both cases were under criminal investigation and that official findings would be made public.

The representative also directly rejected the money-laundering description: “We would however, like to clarify that the ongoing investigation does not involve ‘money laundering’ as has been reported in some quarters.” This is NetEase’s account, not an independent legal finding. PC Gamer also reported the company’s position that the cases would not affect ongoing games including Marvel Rivals and Destiny Rising at that time; that statement does not establish what happened to development later. PC Gamer’s November 11 report quotes the company.
How much money was reportedly involved?
PocketGamer.biz reported that the alleged cases involved contracts valued at 2 billion yuan and an alleged amount of 800 million to 1 billion yuan. Its report attributed those figures to sources; they are estimates, not a proven loss, judgment, or court finding. Dollar conversions differ across coverage, so the yuan figures are the clearest way to state the reported amounts. PocketGamer.biz’s November 11 report contains the figures.

What is known about the legal outcome?
The sources cited here do not establish a final public legal outcome. They report detentions and allegations, and quote NetEase confirming suspected-fraud investigations while disputing the money-laundering claim. They do not provide a final court or law-enforcement finding resolving the allegations. It would therefore be inaccurate to say either that guilt was proven or that the case was definitively closed.

What does this mean for Marvel Rivals?
The reporting concerns NetEase personnel and alleged conduct, not a finding against Marvel Rivals or its development team. NetEase’s statement at the time said the investigations would not affect ongoing games. Separately, the company’s fiscal 2025 investor-relations release continued to list Marvel Rivals as a self-developed game; that business update does not determine the allegations’ legal outcome. NetEase’s fiscal 2025 release supplies that product-status detail.
