What changes depends on the game: it might run at a higher resolution or frame rate, load faster, add new technical features, or include gameplay-related additions. “Free” does not mean every edition qualifies, every console gets the same version, or your saves and trophies will move automatically.
What a next-gen upgrade can change
There is no standard package of improvements. A publisher may release a distinct version for newer consoles, update an existing game, or offer a mix of visual, performance, loading and feature changes. The game’s own feature list is the reliable guide; 4K, 60 frames per second, ray tracing, new content and other enhancements are not guaranteed by the words “next-gen upgrade.”
Resolution, frame rate and image quality
Some upgrades target sharper images, smoother motion, higher-resolution textures or other visual improvements. For example, Electronic Arts’ 2021 Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order release lists higher-resolution textures and assets, 4K/HDR resolution and faster loading. Its FAQ specifies different results by console and mode: on PS5 and Xbox Series X, Performance Mode targets 1440p at 60 fps, while turning it off targets 4K at 30 fps. Xbox Series S is listed at 1080p and 60 fps without a mode toggle. Those figures describe that game’s implementation, not a general promise for upgrades (EA’s upgrade FAQ).
Loading and other technical changes
A newer version may take advantage of faster console storage or updated rendering techniques. Hello Games’ No Man’s Sky Next Generation update describes improved lighting, shadows, animation fidelity, volumetric effects, texture quality and draw distance, as well as faster warps. Its feature list also includes larger multiplayer sessions and richer base construction (Hello Games’ update page).

Controller, audio or game features
Some upgrades add capabilities that are not simply a sharper picture. The No Man’s Sky update also lists PS5 haptic feedback and 3D audio, alongside cross-play. Hello Games labels it a “Free upgrade for existing owners,” but the specific feature list is still tied to that game and its platforms.
What “free” does—and doesn’t—mean
“Free” normally means an eligible owner can claim or receive the newer version without paying a separate upgrade price under the offer’s conditions. It does not establish that every copy, edition, account, region or way of accessing the game qualifies. It also does not mean all platforms receive the same features.

Eligibility can hinge on owning a particular base game or edition, using the relevant console family, or having a disc-drive model. Subscription-library access may be treated differently from a purchased copy, so check the current publisher or store offer rather than assuming it counts.
A disc may still be required
For EA’s Jedi: Fallen Order disc-owner upgrade path, the original disc must be inserted to verify entitlement when playing the upgraded version. A digital-only PS5 cannot read a disc; Sony notes that the PS5 Digital Edition has no disc drive (PlayStation’s PS5 compatibility and upgrade information). A disc-based entitlement is therefore not necessarily a permanent switch to disc-free ownership.

Upgrade versus backward compatibility
Backward compatibility means playing an older-generation game on newer hardware. It may offer better loading or performance, but it does not necessarily mean the publisher has supplied a distinct optimized version. A next-gen upgrade or optimized version is a separate game-specific release or update designed to use newer hardware features.

Xbox’s backward-compatibility information includes the qualification: “Specific features vary by game; download required.” The same practical rule applies when comparing upgrades: identify the version you are installing, rather than assuming a newer console alone means you have the upgraded release.

Why console models and modes matter
Even within one game, the advertised experience may change with console model or a selectable graphics mode. Jedi: Fallen Order lists one set of targets for PS5 and Xbox Series X and another for Series S. No Man’s Sky documents a broader set of technical and gameplay changes rather than the same mode comparison. By contrast, Plaion says the Kingdom Come: Deliverance next-gen update, available February 13, 2026 for Xbox Series X|S, PS5 and PS5 Pro, has no separate performance or quality modes. Its listed changes include native console ports, higher-resolution textures, FSR upscaling and anti-aliasing, up to 60 fps, and expanded language support (Plaion’s update FAQ).
That FAQ says existing PS4 and Xbox One owners receive the update free and that saves carry over automatically. This is a useful example of a specific offer—not a rule that every upgrade is automatic or supports identical modes and transfer steps.

Check saves, trophies and achievements separately
Save migration is a separate feature from receiving the upgraded game. Depending on the title, progress may sync automatically, require an upload and import, or be tied to the same account. Trophies and achievements can follow different rules from save files.
- EA says Jedi: Fallen Order supports save transfer; achievements and trophies unlock when the save is transferred.
- Hello Games describes different save-transfer steps for PlayStation and Xbox in No Man’s Sky (update details).
- Behaviour Interactive’s Dead by Daylight FAQ ties cross-generation progress to using the same account and says trophies did not transfer at the time that FAQ was written (Behaviour Interactive’s Next Gen FAQ).
- Sony’s PS4-to-PS5 cloud-storage transfer method requires PlayStation Plus membership; other transfer methods may have different requirements (PlayStation’s transfer information).
Before starting a transfer, look for the game’s instructions on whether to upload, download, copy, import or sync the save, and whether a cloud subscription is required. Do not assume trophies or achievements follow just because a save does.
How to verify an upgrade before downloading
- Find the game’s current publisher or platform offer. Confirm the eligible base game and edition, and whether the offer covers a purchased copy or subscription access.
- Check the exact console and version. Distinguish Xbox Series X from Series S, PS5 from PS5 Pro where relevant, and the disc-drive PS5 from the Digital Edition.
- Read the ownership conditions. Verify region and account restrictions, whether a disc is needed each time to confirm entitlement, and whether a special edition is required. Behaviour Interactive, for example, documents a paid exception for some Dead by Daylight upgrade content in Germany and Japan.
- Confirm which version the store is offering. Make sure the download is the distinct upgraded version rather than the older compatible version.
- Check migration instructions before leaving the old version. Establish how saves move and whether trophies or achievements carry over before deleting data or switching versions.
- Compare the actual feature list. Note the resolution and frame-rate targets, available modes, loading claims, added features and any differences between console models.
Examples show why the offer matters
Three official examples illustrate the range rather than define a universal upgrade. EA’s Jedi: Fallen Order upgrade specifies different performance targets by platform and mode and requires the disc for its disc-owner route. Hello Games’ No Man’s Sky update bundles visual, loading, multiplayer, construction, haptic and audio changes. Plaion’s 2026 Kingdom Come: Deliverance update offers a free upgrade to existing owners, automatic save carryover and one experience without separate Performance or Quality modes.
Each is a different combination of eligibility, technical changes and save handling. The title-specific support page—not the phrase “next-gen”—determines what an owner can claim.
