If your goal is homebrew, first record the console’s exact system-software build and compare it with a current, named exploit project. As of 18 October 2026, the public danfbs PS5 Relapse Exploit repository lists firmware 7.00 through 13.60, while warning that browser retries, kernel hangs, and system panics can occur. That range is documentation of a project’s scope—not a guarantee that every PS5 model, payload, or feature will work.
There is no universal “homebrew firmware.” Your decision depends on the firmware already installed, whether you need online services or a particular game, which payloads support that build, your tolerance for crashes and recovery work, and Sony’s licence restrictions on modified software.

Should you update your PS5 if you want a jailbreak?
Decide before accepting the update, not after. Sony recommends installing current system software promptly and warns that refusing an update can expose the console to security risks or affect proper operation. Newer firmware can also be required for applications, games, or other content. For a PS5 used as an ordinary, connected console, updating is the sensible option.
A user pursuing community homebrew faces a different trade-off: an update may patch the bug that an exploit chain needs. That does not mean every update automatically destroys every possible jailbreak; it means the exact build must be checked against the exploit and payload documentation available at that time. Once a console moves outside a project’s supported range, you should not assume that an older method still works, that a downgrade is possible, or that a replacement payload will appear.

What a firmware update changes technically
Security patches close attack surfaces
System software controls the browser, kernel, drivers, authentication checks, storage and every privileged service on the console. Sony’s updates include security changes as well as feature and compatibility work. A patch can change a memory layout, remove a corruption bug, harden a privilege boundary, or add validation that prevents a payload from reaching kernel code. The update notes may not describe each vulnerability, because detailed disclosure could help attackers.
Sony’s support guidance puts the risk plainly: “Failure to do so might expose your console to security risks and/or might compromise the proper functioning of the console.” That is the official reason to update; a community exploit’s continued availability is not an official objective of the update process.
Why version numbers matter
Exploit compatibility is normally tied to an exact system-software build, not simply to the PS5 name. Two consoles that look identical can have different browser engines, kernel code, mitigations, or payload requirements because they were updated at different times. Write down the complete version shown in the system-information screen before making a decision. Also note the console model and whether it has been rebooted or restored, since launch state and payload versions can affect results.
What the public PS5 Relapse documentation actually establishes
At the time of writing, the danfbs repository titled PS5 Relapse Exploit lists support for firmware 7.00 through 13.60. Treat that as a bounded statement from that repository, not as a promise of a working jailbreak on every console in the range. A later firmware release, a different hardware revision, a changed browser state, or an incompatible payload can produce a different result.

The repository’s own stability notes are important. The browser may require several attempts, and the kernel exploit can hang or panic the console. Those are documented limitations, not a measured success-rate statistic. No authoritative source establishes a universal jailbreak success percentage, brick rate, or number of affected PS5 consoles, so none can be responsibly quoted.
What the range does not tell you
- It does not prove that every payload or homebrew application supports every build from 7.00 to 13.60.
- It does not prove that a particular PS5 model behaves identically to another model.
- It does not promise a stable launch, crash-free sessions, persistence across reboots, or recovery from every failure.
- It does not authorize bypassing Sony’s security controls or licensing terms.
What firmware is needed for PS5 homebrew?
Homebrew requires a usable exploit entry point plus payloads and supporting components that match the firmware. A browser entry alone is not the same thing as a complete homebrew environment. The etaHEN project describes itself as an all-in-one PS5 homebrew enabler and references jailbreak and homebrew-app functionality, but its availability does not turn every firmware into a supported target. Check the payload documentation for the exact build before updating.
Example: running a native PS1 emulator
PSXS5 is a concrete example of the dependency chain. Its documentation describes a native PlayStation 1 emulator for a jailbroken PS5 and requires etaHEN, kstuff, and ShadowMountPlus at boot. It also documents transferring files by FTP into /data/homebrew/. The project says users must supply legally made backups and that copyrighted games, encryption keys, and BIOS files are not included.

You also need the matching homebrew enabler, kernel support, boot-time components, a transfer method, and content you are legally entitled to use. If any component targets a different build, the application may fail to launch even though the initial exploit appears to work.

Homebrew is not the same as piracy
Homebrew generally means unsigned or community-created software running through an environment that the manufacturer does not officially support. Emulators, development tools, utilities, and open-source applications can fit that description. An emulator does not give you permission to download commercial games, keys, or firmware files. Use only software and backups you are legally allowed to possess, and follow the rules in your jurisdiction.
Sony’s PS5 System Software Licence Agreement separately restricts unauthorized modification. It states: “You may not use tools to bypass, disable or circumvent any PS5 system encryption, security or authentication mechanism.” A technical method can exist while still violating the licence. Sony may also refuse support or repair for a console that has been altered.
How to update or reinstall PS5 system software safely
Normal update from the console
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose System Software.
- Open System Software Update and Settings.
- Select the available update and follow the on-screen prompts.
Keep the console powered during the process and avoid interrupting storage or network access. If an application or online service demands a newer version, note that updating can move the console beyond a community exploit’s documented range.

Sony documents a USB reinstall route for consoles that cannot complete a normal update. You need a USB flash drive, a computer to prepare it, and Sony’s official update file. Create a folder named UPDATE at the required location on the drive and save the file with the exact name PS5UPDATE.PUP. Start the PS5 in Safe Mode, connect the drive, and choose the system-software reinstall option shown by the Safe Mode menu.

Use only Sony’s published file and method. Sony’s warning is explicit: “Don’t download or install the update data from a different source, by a different method, or on a console that has been altered or modified in any way.” Unofficial update data or an altered console may fail to install, may not operate properly afterward, and can affect warranty or repair eligibility. A USB drive used for this procedure is a recovery accessory, not a jailbreak device.
Security, patch timing, and why exploit availability changes
Sony says it performs security assessments before shipping products and before releasing software, accepts vulnerability reports under its disclosure policy, and operates a PlayStation Bug Bounty Program. When a vulnerability becomes known, Sony can patch it in a later build; public exploit developers can also change their code, payload requirements, or supported versions. That makes compatibility time-sensitive. Date any statement you read about a firmware range and recheck the named project before changing your console.
Do not confuse an exploit’s public release with an endorsement by Sony. The official update channel is designed to protect the console and preserve service compatibility, while a community chain deliberately relies on weaknesses that Sony intends to remove.
Common failure modes and sensible responses
The browser stage fails repeatedly
Relapse documentation says several attempts may be needed. A failed attempt does not establish that the firmware is unsupported, but repeated hangs or a changed browser state can require a restart. Avoid treating retries as evidence of a guaranteed success rate; no authoritative rate is published.

The kernel stage hangs or panics
A hang or panic is a documented risk of the kernel race. Allow the console to recover using normal power procedures recommended by Sony. Do not interrupt storage operations or install an unverified recovery file in response to a crash. If the system cannot boot normally, use the official Safe Mode update or reinstall path.
Homebrew payloads no longer launch after an update
First compare the new exact build with the payload and homebrew project’s supported versions. An update may have removed the vulnerable condition or changed an interface that the payload expects. Do not assume that reinstalling an older package will restore compatibility, and do not attempt an unsupported downgrade: Sony’s licence prohibits reinstalling earlier system software in the restricted circumstances described by its terms.
An online game or application refuses to start
Sony states that some applications or content may not work until the system is updated. If online access is your priority, use the current official software and accept that a newer build may no longer match a community exploit range.

A practical decision checklist
- Record the complete firmware version, console model, and current launch state.
- Check whether a named, dated project explicitly supports that exact build; do not generalize from 7.00–13.60 to other versions.
- List the homebrew application you actually want and verify its etaHEN, kstuff, ShadowMountPlus, or other component requirements.
- Decide whether online play, current applications, security fixes, warranty, and official repair matter more than experimental homebrew.
- Back up lawful user data before maintenance and keep an official recovery path available.
- Assume crashes and retries are possible; never treat an exploit demonstration as a stability guarantee.
- Read Sony’s licence and update warnings before modifying the console, because technical feasibility does not remove contractual or legal restrictions.
The bottom line for an update decision
If you need a secure, supported PS5 for current games and online services, update through Sony’s official channel. If you are evaluating homebrew, pause first, document the exact firmware, and verify that the specific exploit, payload, and application stack support it. The publicly documented Relapse range of 7.00–13.60 is a dated project boundary with known retries and crash risks—not a universal jailbreak promise. Once you update, assume compatibility may change and that official recovery and Sony’s licence rules still apply.
