A Nintendo Switch 2 Game-Key Card is a physical card that does not contain the full game. Inserting it lets the console download the game, and the card must remain inserted to play. A report about publication EP 4813482 says Game-Key Card software and eShop software use separate app versions and download servers—but that technical detail comes from a secondary summary, not wording independently verified against the patent record.
What the reported patent details mean
Nintendo Patents Watch’s September 30, 2026 summary of European publication EP 4813482 describes a process in which the console fetches an app and icon when a Game-Key Card is first inserted. The card carries title information, an icon, an app ID, a vendor ID and a cartridge ID; according to the summary, the downloaded icon replaces the card’s icon.

The summary also says the downloaded app runs only while its associated cartridge ID is present, and that the console periodically checks for the card and its ID. It reports that the Game-Key Card app and eShop app are different versions delivered from different servers, and that the console warns users if one app is already in memory when they try to download the other. Gameranx repeated the separate-server and warning points on October 2, 2026, attributing them to Nintendo Patents Watch.
The linked European Patent Office record could not be retrieved for this account, so these are reported details, not a direct reading or quotation of the patent. In particular, separate reported download servers do not establish that Game-Key Card downloads will remain available if Nintendo changes or closes services. The specialist summary also says it does not specify whether the different app types share save data.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
How a Game-Key Card works in practice
- Insert the card and download the game. Nintendo says a Game-Key Card does not hold the full game data. The console downloads it over the internet.
- Make room for the download. The data goes to system memory or a microSD Express card. Nintendo says the package lists the required free space; a microSD Express card is only needed if you need more storage.
- Keep the card inserted to play. Downloading the game does not turn the Game-Key Card into a digital purchase. Nintendo says the card must be in the console to launch the game.
- Expect the first launch to need internet. Nintendo says, “An internet connection is only required when you launch the game for the first time.” After that, the game can start offline unless that particular game requires an online connection.
Game-Key Card, standard game card and eShop purchase compared
| Format | Where the game data is | Account or card requirement | Network requirement | Lending or transfer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard physical game card | On the card, according to Nintendo. | Insert the card to play; Nintendo describes it as a regular physical game card. | Nintendo’s explainer describes insertion and play without a download step. | Nintendo says regular physical cards are easy to lend. |
| Game-Key Card | Downloaded to system memory or a microSD Express card. | Insert the Game-Key Card to play. Nintendo says Game-Key Cards are not tied to a Nintendo Account. | Internet access and enough free storage are needed for the download. Nintendo says internet is required at first launch. | Hand over the physical card; the recipient downloads the game data on their own console. |
| eShop digital game (virtual game card) | Downloaded to system memory or compatible microSD Express storage. | Purchase or redemption is associated with a Nintendo Account; Nintendo manages these purchases as virtual game cards. | A download is needed. Nintendo’s virtual-card guide describes internet access for loading or moving cards between linked systems. | Nintendo’s virtual-card process allows lending to members of the account’s family group. |
What the format difference means for buyers and players
- Want a card that contains the game data? A standard physical game card is the format Nintendo describes as storing the data on the card. A Game-Key Card is physical, but its game download is not stored on it.
- Want to lend the game? Nintendo says a Game-Key Card is not tied to an account and can be lent by handing over the card. The person borrowing it must download the game on their own console. eShop virtual game cards follow Nintendo’s account-based lending process instead.
- Need to play without internet after setup? Nintendo says a Game-Key Card title can start offline after its first launch, except where the individual game itself requires online access. That does not remove the need for the card.
- Concerned about future downloads? The patent summary’s account of different servers is not a promise of indefinite service or future download availability. The available reporting does not establish what would happen after any service change.
