What Age Group Buys Nintendo? What the Data Actually Shows

Nintendo is not just for kids, but available figures do not show which age group buys the most. Here is what the Nintendo and ESA data can—and cannot—tell you.

There is no established age group that buys the most Nintendo products. The available figures describe Nintendo account activity and U.S. video-game players overall—not the ages of Nintendo purchasers. Nintendo is not just for children, but the evidence here cannot identify a dominant buyer age.

What age group buys the most Nintendo?

The sources available do not provide a current, representative breakdown of Nintendo buyers by age. That means it would be inaccurate to say that children, teens, or adults make up the largest share of Nintendo purchasers.

The distinction matters: people who buy a console or game are not necessarily the people who play it. A parent might purchase a game for a child; a household may share a console; and one person can use a Nintendo Account without being the purchaser. Player demographics cannot be treated as sales demographics.

Is Nintendo mostly for kids?

No. Nintendo products are used by people beyond childhood, but the figures cited here do not quantify the ages of Nintendo buyers. The Entertainment Software Association’s 2026 report gives an average age of 37 for U.S. video-game players overall. That is useful context for gaming’s broad audience, not a Nintendo-specific average and not a measure of who buys Nintendo products.

The ESA also reports that 90% of the ratings assigned by the ESRB in 2025 were E, E10+, or T. Those are ratings assigned to games, not a breakdown of sales or buyers. They show the distribution of ratings among games rated that year; they do not establish that children are Nintendo’s main audience.

What Nintendo’s user figures do—and don’t—tell us

Nintendo’s 2022 Switch user chart

Nintendo published an age chart for Switch users in its November 2022 investor presentation. It is Nintendo-specific evidence about users, but it is dated and does not show who purchased the systems or games. Nintendo’s “Nintendo Switch Users” presentation.

Nintendo’s 2025 annual playing-user figure

Nintendo reported 129 million annual playing users for July 2024 through June 2025 in an August 2025 investor presentation. Nintendo defines this measure as Nintendo Accounts registered to Switch or Switch 2 systems that used software at least once during that 12-month period. Accounts whose users did not agree to share user information are excluded; connected-system usage is collected and may be revised retroactively. It is an account-activity measure—not a count of distinct purchasers or an age breakdown. Nintendo’s “Hardware Sell-Through and Annual Playing Users” presentation.

How to choose a Nintendo game for a child

Rather than assuming every Nintendo game is suitable for every age, check the rating and content information for the specific title. In the United States, the ESRB rating and content descriptors can help a parent or caregiver judge whether a game fits a child. Also consider the child’s interests and whether the game is intended for solo or shared play; broad player-age figures cannot determine the right choice for an individual.
