The “it’s fine” verdict belongs to Jared Petty’s May 1, 2025 IGN article about a test-era version of ARC Raiders—not a review of the released game. The game launched later, on October 30, 2025, so that headline should be read as a snapshot of an earlier build, not a current buying recommendation.
What the headline is—and isn’t—saying
The headline is a deliberately lukewarm judgment about a particular test-era experience. The available record establishes its author and date, but not the detailed arguments or firsthand observations behind it. It would be misleading to treat the phrase “it’s fine” as a reliable summary of the final release or to attribute specific criticisms to Petty without the original article.

ARC Raiders was released October 30, 2025, after that IGN piece. The game is a multiplayer third-person extraction shooter developed and published by Embark Studios, released for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X|S. The headline predates the full release by months.
What kind of game is ARC Raiders?
In an extraction shooter, a run is about entering a map, gathering loot, and getting out successfully. The genre’s central tension comes from weighing what you might gain against the chance of losing the run’s haul before extraction. In ARC Raiders, environmental machine threats and other players both contribute to that risk.
#1 Best Overall
- ARC Raiders Deluxe Edition includes the base game and the following content: The Wanderer Set, including the following cosmetic items: “Valente” Outfit" “Pathfinder” Backpack,“Blanket Roll” Backpack Attachment.
- Plus: Character Cosmetic, Finger Gun Rapid Fire Emote, Cowboy Scrappy Body Type and Skin, 2 400 Raider Tokens.
That framing matters more than a simple label like “PvE” or “PvP.” A player can be interested in the setting and shooting but dislike the uncertainty of sharing a map with people whose intentions are unknown. Another player may find that uncertainty—the possibility that a tense encounter becomes a fight or an uneasy truce—is the point.
Is ARC Raiders a good first extraction shooter?
It may appeal as a starting point if you want extraction tension but prefer an approach described in coverage as relatively streamlined and PvE-heavy. That characterization is not a measured comparison, and the available evidence does not establish how the released game’s current balance feels in October 2026.

Before choosing it as your introduction to the genre, ask yourself which parts you actually want:

- Accessible entry: You want to learn the extract-with-loot loop without taking on a reputation for extreme complexity.
- Environmental pressure: Machine threats sound more appealing than a game where the main challenge is other players.
- Uncertainty: You are willing to accept that other players can change the risk of a run, rather than expecting a purely cooperative PvE experience.
- Consequences: You enjoy extraction tension enough to tolerate the possibility that a failed escape costs you loot.
If losing a run’s gains would make the whole session feel wasted, the genre’s basic risk-and-reward loop may be a poor fit regardless of this game’s presentation. If you are curious but unsure, a current gameplay video or a session with a friend can help you judge the feel before buying; neither substitutes for checking the current edition and platform listing.

- Survive Above All: Hunger, thirst, basic safety, and protecting yourself from the weather are all part of the game
- Harvest, Hunt and Build: Cut down trees and turn them into a basic home, which you can quickly expand into a Jurassic estate. Hunt for meat, scavenge for plants (or start your own garden!)
- Customize Everything: An extensive crafting system invites you to mix and match materials scavenged from the island, while also modifying the colors, textures, shapes, and styles
- Explore the Island: Solve the mystery of The ARK as you explore this massive island, discovering Explorer's Notebooks (filled with clues!) throughout
How to think about “worth buying” in October 2026
The May 2025 headline cannot answer whether the released game is worth buying now. It predates launch, and the available reporting does not verify the October 2026 patch state, current storefront editions, or the final game’s present balance. A purchase decision should therefore rest on current platform-specific information, not on a preview-era verdict alone.
Use these questions to make the call:
- Does the extraction loop—loot, risk, and escape—sound enjoyable even when a run goes badly?
- Do you want both machine encounters and the possibility of player conflict?
- Does current footage or a friend’s recent experience match the kind of pace and tension you want?
- Have you checked the current listing for your platform, including edition details and any purchase conditions?
A January 27, 2026 GamesRadar report said the game had attracted over 12 million people, attributing that figure to Embark Studios. It is not a current active-player count, a sales total, or an independently verified count of unique purchasers, so it should not be used as a substitute for checking whether the game suits you now.

What the trading discussion does—and doesn’t—confirm
In a GamesRadar interview published in January 2026, Embark design lead Virgil Watkins discussed a more extensive trading system that the studio had partly built and removed. He said, “We’re not building an auction house or anything like that,” while describing interest in a more social, tactile player-to-player handoff.
That is an interview-era account of the team’s thinking, not confirmation that a particular trading feature shipped or a promise about the current roadmap. It is useful context for the game’s design conversation, but it does not establish how trading works in the October 2026 version.

How to read the “it’s fine” verdict today
Keep the date attached to the judgment. The headline tells you that one writer found the test-era experience unremarkable; it does not establish that the final game is mediocre, nor that it has changed in any particular way since launch. For a present-day decision, compare recent information against your own tolerance for complexity, PvE pressure, PvP risk, and the stakes of extraction.
