Minecraft armor trims are decorative patterns applied to armor using a smithing template, a smithing table, and a trim material. They change how armor looks; the available sources do not establish that trims improve defense, enchantments, or abilities.
What armor trims do
Each trim adds a pattern to armor for visual customization. Minecraft’s official feature announcement describes templates as patterns hidden across the world that players apply at a smithing table to create different combinations: Minecraft Feedback, “Let’s talk about Armor Trims!” (January 24, 2023).
Think of a trim as decoration, not a new armor tier. The cited official description presents trims as visual customization and does not specify a gameplay bonus.
How to apply an armor trim
- Find the smithing template for the pattern you want. Templates are found in the world, and their locations depend on the pattern.
- At a smithing table, combine the trim template with a piece of armor and a trim material. The chosen template determines the pattern, while the material determines its color.
- Check the recipe in your game version before committing a template. A secondary guide says applying a trim consumes the template, but the official sources cited here do not confirm that detail across current Java and Bedrock versions.
The exact inputs and recipes can vary by edition or version. The official feature post confirms the role of templates and the smithing table, but does not provide a complete current recipe.

Where to find trim templates
Templates are discovered in the world, and different patterns are associated with different locations. For example, Mojang’s Bedrock Preview 1.19.80.22 changelog, dated March 22, 2023, introduced Wayfinder, Raiser, Shaper, and Host in Trail Ruins, and Silence in Ancient Cities. That is a historical Bedrock Preview record, not a complete guide to current template locations in every edition.
Copying a template and checking recipe costs
Templates are useful enough that players may want copies, but recipe details should be checked in the relevant game version. A September 9, 2026 EXG Gaming guide describes duplication using seven diamonds and the block associated with the template; the official sources cited here do not independently verify that cost for every current edition and version. Consult the recipe in-game or a guide specific to your version before gathering materials.

How many trims and materials are there?
A secondary guide published September 9, 2026 counts nineteen patterns and ten trim materials. Those totals are not independently confirmed here by a current official source covering both Java and Bedrock, so treat them as version-specific rather than universal. Counts can change as Minecraft updates; check the catalog for your edition and version if an exact total matters.

There is no single best trim: the choice is cosmetic. Consider the pattern’s appearance, the material color, and how the combination looks on the armor you wear. A template’s pattern and the material’s color are separate choices, so the same pattern can look different with another material.
