Minecraft’s available languages depend on the edition and device you play on, so there is no single list that applies to every version. A community-maintained reference records 136 selectable Java Edition entries in its history for version 1.21.9, including ordinary localizations, constructed languages, and joke options. Bedrock and Minecraft Education have separate language contexts; check the language menu in your own game for current availability.
Why Minecraft does not have one universal language list
Java Edition and Bedrock Edition maintain separate in-game language inventories. Availability can also depend on the platform, so a language listed for one edition should not be assumed to appear on every device or in every version. Minecraft Education is a separate product context, with its own language settings and language resources.

The official Minecraft PC product page lists supported languages for that product-page context. That listing is not automatically the same as the full in-game language menu. Likewise, Education language resources should not be merged into Java or Bedrock counts.
How many languages does Minecraft have?
The Minecraft Wiki’s community-maintained language reference records 136 selectable Java Edition entries in its version-history context for release 1.21.9. This is a reference-page count, not an official Mojang statistic or a promise that every platform has all 136 options. The page tracks Bedrock and Pocket Edition availability separately.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
The reference includes localized options for regional varieties, such as English variants, regional Spanish, Brazilian and European Portuguese, and Simplified and Traditional Chinese. It also lists options including Asturian, Basque, Welsh, Northern Sami, and Popoloca. Names and availability can change; the menu in your installed edition is the practical check.
What kinds of language options are included?
Standard localizations and regional varieties
Most entries are translations or regional language varieties. A language’s menu name may be more specific than a broad label such as “Spanish” or “Portuguese,” and the reference provides locale codes alongside display names. Those codes can help distinguish varieties, but the menu display name is what most players will use to choose an option.

Constructed languages
The Java list also includes constructed languages, among them Esperanto, Ido, Interslavic, Klingon, Lojban, Quenya, Toki Pona, and Viossa. These are distinct from conventional regional localizations.
Joke language options
Java Edition includes playful alternatives such as LOLCAT, Pirate Speak, Shakespearean English, and upside-down English. These are novelty choices, not standard translations. Do not assume they are present in Bedrock or on every platform.

How to change Minecraft’s language
- Open the game’s language settings. In Java Edition, open Options and select Language. The exact presentation can vary by version and platform; Minecraft’s official download and Launcher page provides Launcher context, but the in-game menu is where you choose the game language.
- Choose an available language. Use the displayed name in the menu. If you are trying to match a specific regional variety, check the exact label rather than relying on a broad language name.
- Confirm and check the result. Apply the selection if prompted and return to the game. If the language you want is missing, confirm which edition and device you are using, then check for a game update; another edition’s list may not match yours.
How to verify a language for your edition
- Identify whether you are playing Java Edition, Bedrock Edition, or Minecraft Education.
- Check the in-game language menu on the particular device you use.
- Distinguish a menu’s display name from its locale code if you need an exact regional variant.
- For any published or shared full inventory, state the edition, platform, and version/date used to check it.
Minecraft Education has its own language-menu and language-resource-pack context. Its Welsh resource-pack guide illustrates why Education language resources should be checked separately rather than treated as another column in a universal Java/Bedrock list: Minecraft Education resources.
