FAST channels are free, ad-supported, scheduled streaming-TV channels; a 24/7 YouTube channel is a livestream that stays on air around the clock. They can resemble each other, but they are not the same thing: a YouTube livestream is not automatically distributed through a FAST television service. To run one on YouTube, confirm live-stream eligibility, choose a continuous playout method, clear the rights to everything you broadcast, and plan how to monitor and recover the feed.
What does FAST mean?
FAST stands for free ad-supported streaming television. An industry explainer describes FAST as linear, scheduled programming that viewers can watch without a subscription, with advertising supporting the service. This is a useful industry description, not a formal standards definition.
A FAST channel is usually part of a streaming-TV service or platform. A YouTube channel that streams continuously may have a similar linear schedule, but it remains a YouTube livestream unless it is separately distributed through a FAST service.
What is a 24/7 YouTube channel?
It is a YouTube livestream that remains active throughout the day, typically by playing a continuous feed of programming. That feed might use prerecorded videos arranged as a schedule, live-originated programming, or a combination. YouTube describes live streaming as a way to interact with an audience in real time using video, chat, and more, in its Get started with live streaming help page.

“24/7” describes the intended operating schedule, not a guarantee that the stream will never disconnect. The workflow needs a source that can keep supplying video, a way to send it to YouTube, and a plan for checking and restoring the feed if something fails.
Check that your channel can livestream
Before buying equipment or building a schedule, check channel eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to enable live streaming. The same YouTube Help page lists mobile, webcam, encoder, and console methods; an encoder is one supported option, not a requirement to buy a dedicated hardware device.
- Open YouTube Studio and check whether live streaming is available for the channel.
- If prompted, complete channel verification and follow YouTube’s activation steps.
- Confirm that the channel has no live-streaming restriction within the previous 90 days.
- Use YouTube’s current eligibility and setup guidance before committing to a particular workflow, because feature availability can depend on the channel and method.
Plan the programming and clear the rights
Write down what will play, in what order, and which parts are live versus prerecorded. Check the rights for every video, music track, clip, image, and graphic in the schedule. A continuous feed can expose a rights or policy problem for longer than a one-off upload, so a repeatable review process is sensible.

- Keep records showing that you own or have permission to use the material in the way you plan to broadcast it.
- Check whether licenses cover livestreaming and the territories where viewers may watch; permission for an ordinary upload does not automatically establish permission for every use.
- Review YouTube’s current Community Guidelines, copyright rules, and monetization policies before launch. Do not assume that a looped or prerecorded format is exempt from platform rules.
- Prepare a replacement item or a way to pause the schedule if a rights question or policy issue arises.
These checks are especially important for gaming channels using trailers, cutscenes, game soundtracks, tournament footage, or other creators’ clips. The applicable rights depend on the material and permission; simply labeling a stream “24/7” does not settle them.

Computer-based playout
A computer can play a playlist or production output and send it to YouTube through an encoder workflow. This offers control over overlays, transitions, and live inputs, but the computer, software, power, and internet connection must remain available for the stream to continue. YouTube documents encoder streaming as an option for workflows such as gameplay, overlays, and production equipment.
Dedicated encoder
A dedicated encoder can be part of a production setup, but it is not automatically necessary for every continuous channel. Confirm that any device supports the required input, output settings, and workflow before purchasing; the YouTube setup guidance establishes encoder streaming as a method, not compatibility for a particular model.

Hosted playout
A cloud playout service can run uploaded videos without relying on a home computer staying on. Compare services on whether they support prerecorded playlists or live-originated programming, continuous playback, scheduled separate broadcasts, monitoring and recovery, and the total operating cost. YouTube’s documentation does not prescribe a particular hosted product.
Set up the YouTube live stream
- Open YouTube Studio. Go to YouTube Studio, choose the live-stream creation flow, and select the encoder or other method that matches your source.
- Configure the broadcast. Add a title, description, audience setting, visibility, and any other details requested in the live control room. Choose whether viewers can use live chat and set moderation controls appropriate to the channel.
- Get the stream key securely. Copy the stream key from YouTube’s live control room into your encoder or hosted playout service. Treat it like a password: anyone with access may be able to send a feed to your channel. Do not post it, include it in screenshots, or share it in public support messages. Reset it in YouTube if it is exposed.
- Match the output to your source and connection. Select a resolution and bitrate your connection can sustain consistently. YouTube’s setup options and recommendations can change, so use the current settings guidance shown in the live control room rather than assuming one bitrate suits every resolution, frame rate, or connection.
- Check encoding and audio. Confirm that the outgoing video and audio are present, correctly oriented, and in sync. Verify the stream key and destination, then wait for YouTube to receive the encoder signal.
- Preview before going live. Check the preview, sound level, overlays, schedule transitions, and visibility. Start the broadcast only after the signal and content are correct.
- Test the full operating cycle. Let the schedule pass through a transition and, if applicable, a loop boundary. Check that the source continues playing and that the YouTube stream remains active before promoting it as continuous.
For specific encoder parameters such as bitrate, resolution, and keyframe interval, follow YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance for the selected output format. The retrieved setup materials establish the encoder workflow but do not provide a single settings profile that can be prescribed for every source and connection.

Keep a continuous feed distinct from special broadcasts
If you use YouTube’s Live Streaming API, distinguish the ongoing feed from one-off events. YouTube’s API documentation separates broadcast resources from stream resources and gives the example of a channel running a 24/7 feed while creating a separate broadcast for an interview. That distinction helps keep a continuous schedule from being confused with an individually scheduled event.

For channels not building an API integration, the practical equivalent is to decide how interviews, premieres, tournaments, or other special programming fit around the always-on feed. Test any handoff or separate broadcast before announcing it.

Test the schedule, transitions, stream-key handling, audio, and recovery procedure before launch. Decide who checks the channel and what to do if the source stops, the connection fails, or YouTube no longer receives the signal.
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that the encoder or playout service is running, the correct stream key is in use, and the intended channel and broadcast are selected.
- The stream starts but stops at a transition: Review the playlist order, end behavior, and whether the playout source is configured to continue or loop. Test the transition rather than assuming the schedule will repeat correctly.
- Video buffers or drops frames: Check the stability of the upload connection and whether the chosen output settings are sustainable. Reduce output demands or improve the connection if the source cannot send reliably.
- There is no sound or audio is out of sync: Verify the selected audio input or track, playback levels, and encoder audio configuration. Listen to the YouTube preview during a test.
- The stream key may have been exposed: Reset it through YouTube’s live controls and update the connected encoder or service with the replacement key.
- A restriction or claim appears: Check YouTube’s notice and the rights and policy status of the affected material. Remove or replace content when needed, and do not treat uninterrupted playback as a reason to ignore a platform notice.
Understand monetization before relying on it
Live-stream monetization depends on channel eligibility, settings, applicable policies, and whether ads actually serve. YouTube Help’s surfaced monetization guidance says ad slots are not guaranteed to carry an ad, so a stream being online around the clock does not guarantee revenue. Review YouTube’s current official monetization guidance and the channel’s own Studio settings before making financial plans.

Do not treat continuous airtime as a substitute for original, rights-cleared programming or audience demand. No reliable figure establishes the likely audience, revenue, library size, or operating cost for a 24/7 YouTube channel; those depend on the channel’s content and setup.
