Linear TV is programming delivered as a continuous, scheduled channel: viewers tune in and watch whatever is airing at that moment. A 24/7 YouTube channel recreates that channel-like experience with a YouTube Live broadcast that stays on, but it remains a creator-operated stream—not automatically a conventional broadcast or cable channel.
What “linear” means
In a linear format, programming follows a sequence or schedule chosen by the channel. Viewers can join at different points and see the same program that is airing then. That differs from an on-demand catalog, where each viewer chooses a title and when to start it.
A 24/7 YouTube channel applies the idea to YouTube Live: it presents a continuing feed that people can open whenever they want to watch. The feed may contain live production, arranged video programming, or other material. If it is prerecorded video sent out as a live feed, it is still a YouTube livestream technically, but the underlying footage was not captured live.
How a 24/7 YouTube channel works
- Prepare the feed. The creator supplies the material and decides its order—for example, a live camera and audio setup, graphics, or arranged video programming.
- Choose a way to go live. YouTube supports streaming from mobile, webcam, encoder, and console. An encoder can accommodate overlays and hardware inputs such as microphones and cameras, but it is one option, not a requirement for every livestream.
- Send the broadcast to YouTube Live. YouTube delivers the live player and audience interaction features, including chat. YouTube’s setup guidance explains its supported workflows; it does not prescribe a universal way to loop a playlist or keep a channel broadcasting around the clock.
- Keep the source and transmission running. A continuous channel needs its chosen programming source and transmission workflow to remain available. The specific equipment, automation, and recovery design depend on the creator’s setup; YouTube does not guarantee uninterrupted operation or specify one universal 24/7 architecture.

YouTube says channels must be verified and must not have live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its guidance also lists a maximum of 10 active streams per channel and three per stream key. Platform rules can change, so check the current help page before configuring a broadcast. Live content must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.

How it differs from on-demand video and YouTube TV

A creator-run 24/7 YouTube livestream is not the same thing as YouTube TV. The former is a broadcast a creator operates through YouTube Live; YouTube TV is a separate service.
Copyright, policies, and monetization
Continuous playback does not exempt a channel from YouTube’s live-content rules. Creators are responsible for ensuring that the stream complies with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, including having the necessary rights for material they broadcast. YouTube’s general livestream setup guide does not explain how to license looped content, so rights questions depend on the specific material and permissions involved.

Eligible livestreams can use YouTube advertising and fan-funding features, but YouTube does not guarantee that ad slots will serve. Monetization eligibility is distinct from accumulating qualifying Partner Program watch hours. In an August 12, 2026 post, YouTube Creator Liaison Rene Ritchie said that qualified watch hours come from public long-form videos, including podcasts, or archived livestreams; livestreams that are not archived are excluded. Why creators run continuous channels
A continuous feed gives viewers a channel-like option to drop into, rather than requiring them to choose a particular video. YouTube reported that more than 30% of daily logged-in viewers watched live content on average in Q2 2025; that is a dated platform figure, not a guarantee of audience size for any individual channel. The format can suit scheduled programming or themed streams, but viewing figures do not resolve the practical work of maintaining a source, transmission, rights, and archive settings.
