Good cross-platform games depend on your group’s exact devices and the kind of session you want. For a persistent shared world, choose Minecraft Bedrock; for quick competition, try Rocket League; for story co-op, consider Split Fiction; and for longer action progression, look at Warframe. Before buying or downloading, check that every player’s platform and game edition are included: a game appearing on several platforms does not automatically mean those players can join the same multiplayer session.
How to choose a cross-platform game for your group
Cross-play lets people on different platforms play multiplayer together. It does not necessarily transfer a player’s save or character between devices; Epic describes cross-save as a separate feature (Epic’s cross-play and cross-save explainer, July 14, 2025).
Start with the overlap in your group rather than the game’s broad platform availability. Check each person’s exact device generation and edition, then narrow the choices by group size, genre, session length, cost, and whether you need progress to carry between devices. The recommendations below are useful starting points, not a universal ranking.
- Building and a world to revisit: Minecraft Bedrock.
- Short competitive sessions: Rocket League.
- Co-op story for two: Split Fiction.
- Longer-term action progression: Warframe.
- Up to four players in paid co-op: Borderlands 4.
- Several free-to-play modes: Fortnite.
Good cross-platform games to play with friends
Minecraft Bedrock: a shared world for building and exploration
Bedrock is the strongest fit here for friends who want to build, explore, and return to the same world over time. Minecraft’s official platform overview lists Bedrock cross-play across Windows 10/11, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PS5, and mobile (Minecraft’s edition and platform overview).

Edition matters: Java players cannot join Bedrock servers, and Bedrock players cannot join Java servers. Ask PC players which edition they use before setting up a game. For a private persistent world, Minecraft Realms supports play with up to 10 players at a time; Java Realms is for Java, while Realms Plus is for Bedrock. Console Bedrock play can typically require that console’s online multiplayer subscription, so check the current requirement for each player’s platform.
Rocket League: competitive matches with a private option
Rocket League suits groups looking for quick competitive sessions. Official support lists cross-play between Epic Games Store, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and Steam, and says cross-play is enabled by default. Friends can also play together in Private Matches (Rocket League cross-platform support).

Split Fiction: a two-player co-op story
For two friends who want a co-op story, Epic’s guide lists Split Fiction for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S|X, with cross-play and a Friends Pass that allows an invited friend to play without owning a copy (Epic Games Store’s cross-platform game guide, January 13, 2026). Check the current platform listing and Friends Pass conditions before planning around the pass.
Warframe: free-to-play action with longer-term progression
Warframe is a free-to-play action option for players who want progression over time. Epic’s guide identifies it as cross-platform, and Epic separately lists it as supporting cross-save. Those are distinct features: verify the current platform-specific account-linking and cross-progression rules before assuming progress will transfer seamlessly between devices (Epic Games Store’s cross-platform game guide; Epic’s cross-play and cross-save explainer).

Borderlands 4: paid co-op for up to four
Borderlands 4 is a paid co-op choice for groups of up to four. Epic’s guide describes cross-play co-op across its platforms and drop-in/drop-out play (Epic Games Store’s cross-platform game guide). Confirm that the specific platform editions your group plans to use are supported and currently available before purchasing.
Fortnite: several modes in one free-to-play game
Fortnite is a flexible option if the group wants different kinds of sessions rather than one fixed style. Epic lists it among its cross-platform first-party games and describes Battle Royale, racing, and LEGO Fortnite experiences (Epic Games Store’s cross-platform game guide; Epic’s cross-play and cross-save explainer). Check the current platform support for the mode you intend to play.

What to check before inviting everyone
- Match the platform list to the players. Check every friend’s exact platform and generation against current support information; a game’s release on multiple systems alone does not establish cross-play.
- Confirm the edition. In Minecraft, establish whether PC players use Java or Bedrock. For other games, confirm the specific platform version and any account requirements.
- Choose around group size and play style. Borderlands 4 is described for up to four co-op players; Split Fiction is designed as a two-player co-op choice. The other recommendations differ in whether the emphasis is competitive play, varied modes, or a persistent world.
- Check the real cost for each player. Rocket League, Fortnite, and Warframe are free-to-play options; Borderlands 4 and Split Fiction are paid titles. Console online multiplayer may require an additional platform subscription, depending on the game and console.
- Verify cross-save separately. If someone expects to switch devices and keep the same progress, check that title’s current cross-progression rules rather than inferring them from cross-play support.
