Good split-screen games depend on your platform, group size, and whether you want to cooperate or compete. For a quick shortlist, try Sonic Superstars for up to four-player platforming, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds for local racing, and Minecraft for open-ended building and exploration. For a two-player story, consider A Way Out or Split Fiction. Check the exact platform and mode before choosing: “multiplayer” does not always mean same-console play.

Choose by the kind of session you want
For cooperative play
Sonic Superstars lets a group play through its campaign together on split-screen, while A Way Out and Split Fiction are two-player choices with local and online options listed by GamesRadar’s 2026 guide. Minecraft is a less directed alternative: players can build and explore together rather than follow a fixed story.
For competition
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is the clearest racing pick in this list, with PlayStation listing two to four local players and up to four-player split-screen races. Sonic Superstars also includes Battle Mode minigames if your group prefers short competitive rounds alongside its campaign.

For a longer role-playing game
Baldur’s Gate 3 is listed as two-player local split-screen by GamesRadar’s 2026 guide, and Microsoft includes it in its shared/split-screen catalog. Those sources support checking it as an option, but the catalog category alone does not confirm that every edition or mode has the same local features.

What to check before you buy or start
- Confirm same-device local play. Online multiplayer and local multiplayer are separate features. Look for “local,” “shared/split-screen,” or a specific split-screen mode in the listing for your platform; a general multiplayer label is not enough. GamesRadar’s guide distinguishes local from online options.
- Check the player limit. The cited PlayStation guides list Sonic Superstars for 2–4 players on PS4 and Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds for 2–4 local players on PS5. Confirm the listing for the edition you intend to use.
- Verify mode restrictions. Split-screen may be limited to particular modes. PlayStation’s official guide says Fortnite split-screen supports two players in Duos and Squads and other specifically supported modes; it is not an assurance that every mode works. PlayStation describes Battle Royale as supporting two-player split-screen so friends can play together.
- Check platform and edition. PlayStation and Xbox catalogs are useful starting points, not proof of identical features across console, PC, or other editions. Microsoft’s shared/split-screen catalog includes titles such as Minecraft, A Way Out, Borderlands 4, and Baldur’s Gate 3; open the individual game listing to verify its mode and platform.
- Distinguish split-screen from shared-screen. Local multiplayer can use one shared view instead of dividing the display. If separate views matter to your group, confirm that the specific game and mode actually offer split-screen.
