Hall effect and TMR thumbsticks use magnetic sensing without contact at the sensing element. That avoids the rubbing electrical contacts used by traditional potentiometer sticks, reducing one source of wear-related drift. Neither technology makes a controller drift-proof: the stick still has mechanical centering parts, and damage, debris, calibration, software, or component faults can also cause unwanted input.

What is stick drift?

Stick drift is unwanted input when a thumbstick is at rest—for example, a character or camera moves even though you are not touching the stick. It can happen when the sensor reports a position other than center, or when the stick mechanism itself no longer returns reliably to center. Those are related but distinct problems: changing the sensing technology can reduce wear at the sensing interface, but it cannot prevent every mechanical or electronic fault.

How do Hall effect and TMR joysticks work?

Traditional potentiometer sticks

A traditional potentiometer reads stick position through electrical contact along a resistive element. Wear or contamination at that contact can contribute to readings that shift over time.

Hall effect sticks

In a Hall effect design, a magnet moves with the stick and a sensor detects changes in its magnetic field. The sensing element does not need to rub against the magnet. Texas Instruments’ engineering note describes Hall effect joystick designs and the design trade-offs involved; the technology removes contact at the sensing element, not the stick’s moving mechanical parts.

TMR sticks

TMR stands for tunneling magnetoresistance. TDK describes it as a magnetic sensing technology in which a magnetic field changes resistance in a TMR element. Like Hall effect sensing, it can read stick movement without contact at the sensing interface. The two technologies use different sensing principles; the available evidence does not establish that every TMR stick is more accurate or durable than every Hall effect stick. See TDK’s TMR overview.

Can Hall effect or TMR prevent stick drift?

They can reduce the particular risk of drift caused by wear at a potentiometer’s rubbing electrical contacts. That is a genuine design advantage, but “never drifts” or “drift-proof” is too strong. Springs, gimbals, and other mechanical parts still move; physical damage, heavy use, debris, calibration, firmware or software issues, and component failure can all affect input.

PowerA lists centering wear, damage or heavy use, calibration or software issues, and environmental conditions among possible causes of drift-like behavior in Hall effect sticks. SCUF similarly notes that magnetic-sensing controllers can still be affected by damage, debris, calibration issues, or component failure. Contactless sensing addresses one wear point, not the entire controller.

Is TMR better than Hall effect?

There is no evidence here to support a universal winner. “Better” depends on what matters: sensing implementation, power use, calibration options, stick feel, mechanical construction, price, warranty, and support. A sensor acronym alone does not establish a controller’s accuracy or long-term reliability.

Some manufacturer specifications illustrate why claims need to be kept product-specific. PowerA says its Hall effect sensors have a lifespan of 5 million cycles; GameSir lists 12-bit resolution, under 1 ms sensor response time, more than 5 million cycles, and under 1 mA operating current for its TMR technology. These are vendor claims, not independent comparative tests, and should not be generalized to all sticks. TDK InvenSense also claims more than 10× higher sensitivity for its TMR sensing technology; that is not a measured comparison of gaming controllers.

Texas Instruments identifies resolution, features, cost, manufacturability, and user experience as design considerations for joystick systems. In practice, the complete mechanism and its implementation matter alongside the sensor.

What to compare when choosing a controller

  • Compatibility: Check that the exact controller model supports your console, handheld, or PC setup.
  • Centering and calibration: Look for documented calibration and deadzone controls, and consider whether the stick returns consistently to center.
  • Whole-stick construction: The sensor is one part of a moving mechanism. Do not treat its label as a complete measure of durability or feel.
  • Power and connection: Wireless controller power profiles can differ, but a TMR stick does not by itself prove a measurable battery-life gain. SCUF describes different power profiles without quantifying a controller-level battery advantage.
  • Price, warranty, and support: Compare the complete controller and its support rather than paying a premium based only on a sensor acronym.

There are no independent, controlled, long-term gaming-controller tests established here that compare Hall effect and TMR sticks. Manufacturer cycle-life or performance figures should therefore be read as specifications from that manufacturer, not as proof that one technology lasts longer in real-world play.

Should you replace a drifting controller?

A controller with Hall effect or TMR thumbsticks may be worth considering if you want to avoid wear at the sensing interface found in potentiometer sticks. But first check the exact model’s compatibility, calibration features, warranty, and overall construction. If repairing an existing controller, use only a joystick replacement module confirmed for that specific model; installation method, calibration needs, and soldering requirements can vary.
