What Are Nintendo Switch Title Keys?

A Nintendo Switch title key is the per-game cryptographic value that lets the console decrypt a title’s protected content. Here is how it is stored and how it differs from prod.keys, title.keys and title IDs.

A Nintendo Switch title key is the cryptographic value tied to one specific game. It is what allows the console to decrypt that game’s protected content. It is a per-title secret used in the protection system, not the game’s public title ID, and not a serial number. Nintendo’s 2024 court filing and independent technical references both describe it as part of a security and licensing mechanism, and the detail below separates what those sources actually say from what remains unconfirmed.

What the key does

Nintendo’s 2024 complaint against Tropic Haze LLC groups two names under one definition. It states: “The key that unlocks a particular game’s encryption, sometimes called a title key for a Nintendo eShop game or a content key for a physical cartridge game (title key and content key shall be collectively referred to herein as the ‘Title Key’), is distributed by Nintendo with the game file in encrypted form.” That is paragraph 33 of the complaint in Nintendo of America Inc. v. Tropic Haze LLC, dated February 26, 2024. A complaint is a party’s pleading, so it states Nintendo’s position and allegations rather than the findings of an independent examination.

Where the key is stored

The complaint and the technical references place the key differently depending on how the game was delivered. The label changes with the delivery method, but the function is the same.

Digital eShop games

According to the complaint, an eShop game’s key is kept in a ticket outside the game ROM, so the game file itself carries no readable key. The Switch Brew wiki describes a ticket as the format that stores an encrypted title key. Its documented ticket fields include the title-key block, key type, license type, master-key revision, ticket ID, device ID and rights ID. Switch Brew is maintained by the community, not by Nintendo, so its field list is a technical reference rather than an official consumer specification.

Physical cartridges

The complaint describes the cartridge key as located in a game-file header, and it uses the term content key for this case. Readers will see both labels in discussions of the same kind of value.

How the protection chain works

The sources describe a layered arrangement rather than a single lock. In simplified order:

  1. Game content is encrypted with the game’s title key (or content key, for cartridges).
  2. The title key is itself held in encrypted form. A 2019 England and Wales High Court judgment describes it as encrypted with common and device keys before it is used.
  3. When the game runs, the console uses keys from its protected keyset, which the complaint names as prod.keys, to decrypt the title key. The decrypted title key is then used to decrypt the game content.

The judgment is a simplified legal account of the protection measures, not a protocol specification. The complaint’s account is an allegation made in litigation. Neither describes every step in every case.

Title key, prod.keys, title.keys and title ID compared

These four terms are frequently confused. The table separates them by what each one is, where the sources place it, and what it does.

Term What it is Where the sources place it Role
Title key Per-game cryptographic key for encrypted content Stored encrypted in an eShop ticket or in a cartridge’s game-file header (complaint; Switch Brew ticket documentation) Decrypts one game’s content once it has been unwrapped
prod.keys Console-level protected keyset The complaint says the console uses these keys in the decryption chain; NXTools documentation distinguishes its general keyset files (prod.keys or dev.keys) from per-content keys Supplies the keys the console uses to unwrap title keys; not specific to one game
title.keys A text file format used by some tools NXTools documentation describes it as a list of rights-ID/title-key pairs Records title-key values in one format; the file name does not confirm where its values came from
Title ID A public identifier for a title NXTools documentation says it is an identifier and should not be called a title key Identifies the title; it is not a decryption key

What the sources establish, and what they do not

  • Nintendo’s complaint (February 26, 2024): the eShop and cartridge naming, the eShop ticket location, the cartridge header location, and the role of prod.keys in the chain. These are allegations in a filing.
  • England and Wales High Court judgment (2019): the title key is encrypted with common and device keys before use. This is a simplified legal summary.
  • Switch Brew and NXTools: ticket fields, the title.keys format and the distinction from title IDs. Both are community-maintained technical references.
  • Not established by these sources: a complete, current specification published by Nintendo, or the detail of every ticket variant and implementation.

Use the complaint for Nintendo’s stated position, Switch Brew for ticket structure, and the 2019 judgment for the legal framing. This article covers how the protection works. It does not cover obtaining key files or bypassing access controls, and nothing in the sources supports doing either.
