A pre-installed game is already placed on a device before you choose to download it. A pre-registered game is different: you sign up for notice of an unreleased game, and Google Play may install it when it launches on an eligible device. The terms describe different stages and different actions.
What does “pre-installed game” mean?
In ordinary usage, a pre-installed game is game software that comes on a device before you separately install it. On Android, device makers can choose to pre-install their own apps, third-party apps, or other AOSP apps; configurations can vary by device. That does not mean every phone or tablet includes the same game, or that a particular model includes any specific title. Android’s information about Google Mobile Services describes this device-maker role, but the phrase does not have an established universal definition across platforms.
How is pre-registration different?
Pre-registration is an action you take before a game is released, not proof that it is already on your device. On Google Play, you can register interest from an unreleased game’s store listing. Google Play then sends a notification when the game launches; eligible devices may have it automatically installed that day, but automatic installation is not guaranteed for every user or device. Google describes pre-registration as a way for developers to build awareness and an early install base ahead of release. Its Google Play pre-registration page recommends enabling the feature three to six weeks before a planned launch; that is launch guidance, not a statistic about game performance or installs.

Pre-installed vs. pre-registered at a glance

What to check if you see the term
- If a game appears on a new device, “pre-installed” generally means it was included in that device’s software configuration; the exact included apps can depend on the model or configuration.
- If a store page asks you to pre-register, you are expressing interest in an upcoming release. It is not an instruction that the game is already installed.
- For Google Play specifically, expect a launch notification, with automatic installation only on eligible devices. Google’s documentation does not establish a universal pre-registration or pre-installation policy across all app stores and device makers.
