After unveiling, a Riven shows its weapon assignment and stat package. You can then spend Kuva to cycle, or reroll, those stats. The strength of the result is scaled by the weapon’s current Riven Disposition, so the same type of Riven behaves differently on different weapons.
Update 44: Iceblade of Narin (September 2026) adds optional Trait Locking: one stat can be preserved during a cycle, but that cycle costs twice as much Kuva. The same update describes Riven Splicing as later content tied to Glacial Defiance; treat that system as announced rather than guaranteed live unless your current game build confirms it.

What a Riven Mod does
A Riven is a special weapon mod whose final statistics are not shown when you first obtain it. Its eventual roll can contain several positive traits and, on many Rivens, a negative trait. The traits are generated for the weapon type or specific weapon shown when the Riven is unveiled. Because the values are randomized, two Rivens for the same weapon can support very different builds.
Recommended Free Tools
Rivens are not universal upgrades that are automatically best in every loadout. Their value depends on the weapon, its current Disposition, the combination of positive and negative traits, and whether those traits improve the build you actually use. A high number on one stat can be less useful than a smaller, well-matched package that reaches an important breakpoint or frees another mod slot.

The three Riven states
Digital Extremes documented three practical states in the Update 32 notes. Understanding the state matters because it determines whether the challenge is visible and whether the Riven occupies one of your Riven slots.
| State | What you see | Riven-slot behavior | What you can do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indistinct (shown as ???) | The broad Riven type is known, but the challenge and final stats are hidden. | It does not use a Riven slot while it remains unequipped. Indistinct Rivens can stack. | Keep it, trade it, or equip it to reveal the challenge. |
| Veiled | Equipping the indistinct Riven reveals its challenge, but the final stat roll is still hidden. | It consumes a Riven slot. | Install it on the required weapon and complete the displayed challenge. |
| Unveiled | The weapon assignment and randomized statistics are visible. | It remains a normal slotted Riven. | Equip it, trade it, or cycle its statistics with Kuva. |
Indistinct Rivens
An indistinct Riven is the uncommitted state immediately after acquisition. It can stack with identical indistinct Rivens and, according to the official notes, does not consume a Riven slot until you equip it. Receiving one therefore does not by itself activate a hidden challenge or reduce your available slot count.
Veiled Rivens
Equipping the indistinct Riven is the transition that reveals the challenge and turns it into a veiled Riven. The challenge text becomes visible, and the Riven starts using a slot. The challenge can involve a weapon-specific action under conditions chosen by the game. The available official material does not establish one universal challenge list or every prerequisite, so read the exact objective shown on your own mod rather than relying on a generic example.

Unveiled Rivens
Completing the challenge unveils the Riven. Its randomized stat package and weapon assignment are then visible, and you can decide whether to use the roll, trade it, or cycle it. Cycling does not turn the mod back into a veiled Riven.
How to unveil a Riven Mod
- Obtain an indistinct Riven. Rivens can appear through rewards and vendors, including Palladino, but the reviewed official notes do not provide a complete, permanently current acquisition list. Use the reward or vendor description in your current game version for the route you are pursuing.
- Open your Mods collection and inspect the Riven. It will show an indistinct or “???” presentation rather than a usable final roll.
- Equip the Riven. Equipping it reveals the challenge and changes its practical state to veiled. This is also when the Riven begins consuming a Riven slot.
- Read every condition in the challenge. Check the required weapon, mission type, enemy or objective condition, and any restrictions displayed in the challenge text. Do not assume that a similar-sounding challenge has the same requirements.
- Complete the challenge in the required mission. The game tracks the objective and confirms completion when all conditions are met. If it does not complete, compare the mission and equipment you used with the exact wording shown on the mod.
- Return to the Riven in the Mods interface. Once the challenge is complete, the Riven is unveiled and its weapon and stats are displayed. It can now be equipped or cycled with Kuva.
All three states are described as tradeable in the Update 32 documentation. The important inventory distinction is that an indistinct Riven remains slot-free only until it is equipped; equipping it exposes the challenge and uses a slot even before you finish unveiling it.
Riven stats and Riven Disposition
Riven Disposition is the weapon-specific tuning value that controls how powerful a Riven’s numbers can be. Digital Extremes’ original explanation describes the intent plainly: less-used weapons are generally allowed more powerful Rivens than more-used weapons, while more popular or stronger weapons receive less generous values. Disposition is attached to the weapon, not chosen independently for each mod.
Rank #2
Disposition is not permanent. It can change over time, and Update 44 says the values are updated with each Prime Access round. A value copied from an old build guide may therefore no longer describe the current roll range. When comparing or pricing a Riven for a named weapon, check that weapon’s current Disposition in the current game build.
How to read a Riven’s trait package
- Positive traits: These increase selected weapon properties, such as damage, critical chance, status chance, multishot, or other traits shown by the mod. The useful choice depends on the weapon’s base behavior and your build.
- Negative traits: A drawback can lower an unwanted property while allowing stronger positive values elsewhere. Whether the negative is acceptable depends on how the weapon is used; a drawback tied to a stat the build ignores may be manageable, while one that removes a core function can make the roll unusable.
- Trait count: The number of traits matters when you plan to cycle with a lock. A locked trait constrains the number of traits on the resulting Riven while that lock remains active.
The official material does not establish a universally optimal stat combination. Judge a roll against the weapon’s current Disposition, your intended build, and the opportunity cost of replacing another mod.
How Kuva cycling (rerolling) works
Cycling spends Kuva to generate a new stat result for an unveiled Riven. The result is a new randomized package, not a gradual improvement to the existing numbers. The official cycling explanation says you can accept or decline the displayed result. Declining leaves the current roll in place; accepting replaces it with the displayed roll.
- Open the unveiled Riven in the Mod interface. The cycling option is available only after the challenge has been completed.
- Choose the cycling command and review the Kuva cost. The cost shown in your current interface is the authoritative one for that cycle. Older notes contain a historical cost schedule and should not be treated as today’s price.
- Review the generated result before confirming. Compare every positive and negative trait with the roll you currently own and with your build plan.
- Accept or decline. Accepting replaces the current statistics; declining keeps them. Cycling does not veil the mod again.
Update 44 includes a screenshot showing “Cycle for 3,500 Kuva.” That is an illustrative interface example, not a universal or guaranteed current price for every Riven or every cycle. The reviewed sources do not establish a complete current baseline and escalation schedule, so rely on the amount displayed in your own Cycling menu.
Trait Locking in Update 44
Trait Locking is the live cycling option described in Update 44. Digital Extremes’ wording is: “One trait (stat) can be locked at a time while cycling a Riven, freezing it until the lock is removed or the Cycling menu is closed.” In practical terms, you select one displayed stat, lock it, and generate new results without changing that selected trait.

- Open the Riven’s Cycling menu.
- Select one trait and apply the lock. The lock itself is free.
- Cycle while the trait is locked. The selected trait is preserved while the other eligible traits are regenerated.
- Accept or decline the result as usual. The locked trait remains fixed if you continue cycling with the lock active.
- Remove the lock when needed. You may remove and reapply it freely during the open Cycling session.
Costs and trait-count limitation
A cycle performed with a locked trait costs twice the Kuva of that cycle without a lock. The lock also constrains the number of traits on the resulting Riven. If you want to change to a different trait count, unlock every trait before cycling for that outcome; leaving a trait locked can prevent that change.
Rank #3
Locks do not persist after you close the Cycling menu. Reopening the menu requires you to apply the lock again. This prevents an old lock from silently affecting a later session, but it also means you should check the lock state every time before spending Kuva.
When locking is worth the extra Kuva
Locking is useful when one trait is already essential and you are willing to pay double to search for a better combination around it. It is less attractive when the existing trait is merely acceptable, when you need a different number of traits, or when your Kuva budget cannot support repeated doubled-cost cycles. Decide whether preserving one stat is worth more than the additional attempts you could afford without a lock.

Update 44 describes Riven Splicing as later content associated with Glacial Defiance. The planned system would combine two traits into a new spliced trait. That spliced trait would be locked without consuming the normal Trait Lock, and the process would require Riven Splicers earned from Glacial Defiance.

How to compare two Rivens
There is no single “best Riven” independent of its weapon and build. Use the following order when comparing two unveiled mods.
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon and current Disposition | Are both Rivens for the same weapon, and what is that weapon’s current Disposition? | Disposition changes the strength of the roll, and periodic updates can change how old comparisons age. |
| Positive and negative traits | Which traits improve your actual build, and is the drawback harmless, tolerable, or disabling? | A lower headline number can be better if its traits align with the weapon’s role and avoid a damaging penalty. |
| Trait count and cycling plan | Do you intend to preserve one trait, and do you need the option to change the number of traits? | A locked trait constrains trait count until all locks are removed. |
| Kuva budget | Can you afford repeated cycles, especially at double cost with a lock? | The practical value of a potential upgrade depends on how many attempts your resources support. |
| Inventory and trade state | Is the Riven still indistinct, already veiled, or unveiled, and do you have an available slot? | Indistinct Rivens are slot-free until equipped; all three states are documented as tradeable. |
Common mistakes and fixes
- Assuming acquisition uses a slot: An indistinct Riven can stack and does not use a slot until equipped. If you are saving space, leave it unequipped.
- Expecting stats before completing the challenge: A veiled Riven exposes the challenge, not the final roll. Finish the displayed objective to unveil it.
- Thinking a cycle re-veils the mod: Cycling changes the statistics of an unveiled Riven; it does not hide the challenge again.
- Using an old Disposition value: Disposition changes over time and is updated with Prime Access rounds. Check the current weapon value before evaluating a roll.
- Budgeting a locked cycle at the normal price: Trait Locking doubles that cycle’s Kuva cost. Confirm the displayed cost before accepting.
- Leaving a lock active by accident: A lock can be removed and reapplied during the session, but it is cleared when the Cycling menu closes. Recheck the state after reopening.
- Trying to change trait count while a stat is locked: Unlock all traits first if changing the number of traits is part of your plan.
- Treating Splicing as guaranteed content: The Update 44 notes present it as later content. Verify that your current build includes it and that Riven Splicers are obtainable before making decisions around it.
What to remember
A Riven starts as an indistinct, stackable item. Equipping it reveals a challenge and uses a slot; completing that challenge unveils randomized weapon stats. Kuva cycling lets you replace those stats without re-veiling the mod. Riven Disposition tunes the strength of the result for each weapon and changes over time, so current values matter. Update 44’s Trait Locking can preserve one stat during cycling for double Kuva cost, while the announced Splicing system should be treated as unavailable until your current game version confirms its release.
