What Are Sprites in Fortnite? How Their Powers, Shrines and Runners Collection Work

Sprites are small, equippable Fortnite helpers that grant a special power during a match. The original Chapter 6 system introduced Air, Water and Earth Sprites, while Fortnite Runners later added extractable Sprites whose powers can be added to a collection for future matches. Their availability, abilities and playlist restrictions change with the season, so always check the active patch and mode.

What a Sprite is in Fortnite

Epic Support describes Sprites as “little helpers on the battlefield.” You find one during a match, equip it, and receive a Sprite Power. The power depends on the Sprite type and the season’s rules. A Sprite is therefore more than a collectible cosmetic: it is a temporary gameplay tool that can alter movement, healing, looting or combat.

The original Chapter 6 Season 1 implementation centered on three types: Air, Water and Earth. Each one had a distinct interaction. Later content, including the June 5, 2026 Fortnite Runners update, expanded the idea with new abilities, extraction and a collection system. The same word can now describe different mechanics in different seasons, which is why an old map guide may not match the current island.

How the basic Sprite loop works

  1. Locate a Sprite. Sprites appear as match pickups or at season-specific points of interest. Their spawn rules and names can change when the island or season changes.
  2. Equip it. Equipping grants the associated Sprite Power. Read the on-screen description before committing to it, particularly if you are choosing between mobility and healing.
  3. Use the power. Some powers activate when you throw the Sprite, some when you feed it items, and others through a shrine interaction. The activation method is part of the Sprite’s identity.
  4. Develop it during the match. Epic says Sprites can be leveled through exploration, eliminations and surviving the Storm. These activities reward continued use rather than simply picking up the item and ignoring it.
  5. Protect or bank it when the mode requires that step. In the original system, an eliminated player who has not banked a Sprite can leave it on the battlefield for another player to pick up. Fortnite Runners adds a separate extraction process for carrying a Sprite power into later matches.

Because the game has used both ordinary match pickups and extractable collection items, “keeping” a Sprite does not always mean the same thing. A normal Chapter 6 Sprite helped you in that match; it did not automatically become a permanent inventory item. Runners’ extraction system is the exception described below.

What Air, Water and Earth Sprites do

The three foundational types were documented in Epic’s Chapter 6 Season 1 feature. Their effects are deliberately different, so the best choice depends on your squad’s immediate problem.

Sprite Primary effect How you activate it Team utility Mobility or combat value Season or mode qualification
Air Creates an updraft wind vortex. Throw the Sprite. Can reposition you or teammates and can open a route through a fight. The vortex can launch a player with glider redeploy, damage builds and launch vehicles. Documented for Chapter 6 Season 1; later seasons may alter or remove it.
Water Creates a healing fountain that restores health and shields to nearby players. Throw the Sprite. Useful for a group recovery point after a fight or while rotating. Primarily defensive; it does not provide the Air Sprite’s launch effect. Documented for Chapter 6 Season 1; availability is season-specific.
Earth Exchanges offered items for a reward. Feed items to the Sprite. Lets a squad convert unwanted equipment or supplies into a chance at different loot. Its value is resource management rather than direct movement or damage. Documented for Chapter 6 Season 1; the Earth Sprite also has a separate Creative device implementation.

Air Sprite: movement, structures and vehicles

Throwing an Air Sprite creates a vertical wind vortex. A player caught in it can be launched and use glider redeploy. The same vortex can damage builds and launch vehicles, making it useful for a rotation as well as for disrupting a defended position. Since the effect can move objects as well as players, deploy it only when your squad is ready for the resulting change in position.

Water Sprite: a shared recovery point

The Water Sprite produces a fountain that restores health and shields to nearby players. Its area effect makes it more valuable to a squad than to a lone player who is already fully healed. Place or throw it where teammates can remain near the fountain without exposing themselves unnecessarily.

Earth Sprite: trade unwanted items for a reward

An Earth Sprite accepts items and exchanges them for loot. The trade is a deliberate gamble: you give up an item you can spare in return for a different reward. It is most useful when your inventory contains low-value or duplicate equipment and your squad can afford to lose the offered resources.

Sprite Shrines and Sprite Boons

A Sprite Shrine is an island interaction that can be revitalized by bringing it a Sprite. Revitalizing the shrine grants a Boon, which is a persistent gameplay effect rather than the one-off action of throwing or feeding a Sprite. Shrine locations and availability are tied to the active season, so there is no permanent, all-season coordinate list.

Boon Effect documented by Epic What that changes in a match
Fire Boon Reloads weapons faster. Reduces the time you are vulnerable between magazines, especially during close-range fights.
Void Boon Reveals nearby players after an elimination. Provides information for pursuing another opponent or avoiding a third party after a knock or elimination.
Wind Boon Increases movement speed while the pickaxe is equipped. Improves travel while harvesting or rotating with the pickaxe out, but does not describe a universal weapon-in-hand speed increase.
Water Boon Grants health and shields while swimming to you and nearby swimming squadmates. Makes water rotations a recovery opportunity for a group rather than merely a way to cross the map.

The shrine step creates a choice: keep the Sprite for its immediate interaction, or spend it at a shrine for a longer-lasting Boon. The better option depends on whether your team needs an Air launch, a Water fountain, an Earth trade or a persistent benefit such as faster reloads.

Can you keep a Sprite for the next match?

For the original Chapter 6-style system, no. Equipping a Sprite gave you its power for the current match; it was not a permanent locker item. If you were eliminated before banking it, Epic said the Sprite could remain on the battlefield for another player to collect.

Fortnite Runners introduced a different rule. In that content, players can find and extract a Sprite, add it to a collection and bring its power into future matches. Runners Sprites were spread across the island with new abilities, including powers that wrap a player in shields, provide temporary invisibility or add burst damage. Those powers belong to the Runners collection system, not automatically to every Air, Water or Earth Sprite encountered in another season.

In practical terms, ask which system you are playing:

  • Ordinary seasonal Sprite pickup: use the power in the current match; do not assume it persists after the match ends.
  • Runners extraction: complete the mode’s extraction objective to add that Sprite and its power to the collection for later matches.

Epic’s current support notice also says Sprites collected in Season 3: Runners are being immortalized in a “Sprite Garden” for Chapter 7 Season 4. That transition shows why collection rules and long-term access should be checked against the current season rather than inferred from an older guide.

Are Sprites available in ranked or competitive Fortnite?

Epic Support states that Sprites are not available in competitive modes. If a playlist is classified as competitive in the active season, it may omit Sprite spawns, powers and shrine interactions entirely. The exact boundary can change when Epic changes playlists, so a casual Battle Royale guide should not be treated as proof that a ranked queue contains the same items.

Before planning a loadout around a Sprite, check the mode’s current rules, the season’s patch notes and the in-game loot pool. If the item does not appear in the match, that is usually a playlist or season restriction rather than a hidden spawn location.

How to use Sprites effectively in a match

Choose for the problem in front of you

  • Choose Air when you need a vertical escape, a fast rotation, build disruption or a way to move a vehicle.
  • Choose Water when several teammates need health and shields and can safely hold a position near the fountain.
  • Choose Earth when you have spare items and want to convert them into a different loot opportunity.
  • Choose a Shrine Boon when a persistent benefit will affect more of the remaining match than a single throw or trade.

Use the activation method deliberately

Air and Water require a throw, so check the landing area before activating them. Air can move vehicles and damage structures as well as launching players; Water needs nearby allies to receive its recovery value. Earth consumes offered items, so confirm what you are giving up before completing the exchange. A shrine requires taking the Sprite to the shrine and revitalizing it, which may expose your squad while traveling.

Account for progression

Exploration, eliminations and Storm survival can level a Sprite according to Epic’s support description. That favors players who keep moving and engage thoughtfully instead of abandoning the item immediately. The leveling rules are not a promise of identical upgrades in every season, so read the current power description for the actual thresholds and rewards.

Plan for elimination

If you are carrying a Sprite in a system that allows it to be banked, do not assume elimination transfers it to your squad automatically. Epic’s documented behavior is that an unbanked Sprite can remain on the battlefield for another player. In a team match, tell your squad where it was dropped and decide whether recovering it is worth the risk.

Where to find Sprite Shrines

Sprite Shrines are season-specific island objects, not a permanently fixed feature with one reliable coordinate for every chapter. Look for the shrine marker or interaction prompt in the current island’s map and match information. If the shrine is absent, cannot be revitalized or does not offer the listed Boons, the active season or playlist may use a different implementation.

  • ACCESSORIES: Comes equipped with Back Bling and Harvesting Tools
  • BONUS CODE: Code for virtual item included: Mecha-jolly

Because the documented Boons are persistent effects, a squad should decide on a shrine route before the Storm forces a rotation. Carrying a Sprite across the map solely for a shrine can be worthwhile when the team expects many later fights, but it can be a poor trade if the route crosses an exposed area or delays a safer rotation.

Sprites in Fortnite Creative

Creative has a separate Earth Sprite device that island creators can place and configure. Players exchange registered items, weapons or loot and receive rewards set by the creator. The device exposes controls for whether it is enabled, the grant timer and the trade limit.

This Creative device is not evidence that every public Battle Royale match uses the same trade table. Its rewards and restrictions are defined by the island’s creator, so read that island’s instructions before offering valuable equipment. A Creative Earth Sprite may therefore feel familiar while behaving differently from the seasonal pickup.

Common points of confusion

“I found a Sprite, but no power appeared.”

Check that you actually equipped it rather than merely walking over it, and verify that the playlist supports Sprites. Some modes exclude them, and seasonal implementations can replace one type with another power.

“The shrine is on an old map, but I cannot use it.”

Old shrine locations are not guaranteed to survive an island update. Confirm the current season and mode before searching for a historical location.

“I expected my Sprite to be available next game.”

Only the Runners extraction-and-collection system is documented as carrying a Sprite power into future matches. A regular match pickup normally ends with that match.

“My squad lost the Sprite when its carrier was eliminated.”

In the documented original behavior, an unbanked Sprite can stay on the battlefield for another player to pick up. Mark the drop location quickly, but weigh recovery against the danger of returning to the fight.

“The ability in a video does not match my current game.”

That is often a season difference. Air, Water and Earth describe the foundational Chapter 6 set, while Runners added different powers and extraction. Compare the video’s season and playlist with the current patch before copying its strategy.

A quick decision checklist

  • Confirm that the current playlist allows Sprites.
  • Identify whether the item is a normal seasonal Sprite or a Runners collection Sprite.
  • Read the activation requirement: equip, throw, feed or shrine.
  • Choose immediate utility versus a persistent Boon.
  • Do not offer Earth Sprite items or a shrine sacrifice that your squad still needs.
  • If persistence matters, complete extraction and verify that the Sprite appears in the collection.
  • Recheck the season after a major chapter or mode change; Sprite powers and locations are not permanent.
