You can display them on your profile, and they feed into Steam’s profile XP and level system. The best-documented example is the sale badge, which you craft from a complete set of sale trading cards. Steam’s general rules for standard game badges are less clearly documented, and this article notes where that matters.
What a Steam badge is
A Steam badge is a profile item tied to your account rather than a physical object. Steam’s sale-badge FAQ describes crafted badges as something you display on your profile, and the rewards it describes are digital: profile XP, emoticons, profile backgrounds, and trading cards.
How a sale badge is earned
Steam’s sale-badge FAQ explains the sale badge as an event-specific badge made from a complete set of that sale’s trading cards. A set is usually 10 cards, but the number varies by event, so check the current sale page for the exact count.
Sale cards can be obtained in several ways, according to the same FAQ:

- Making eligible sale purchases
- Trading with other users
- Buying cards on the Community Market
Purchase thresholds and availability change from event to event. Treat any specific offer as valid only for the sale it was published for.
Once you hold a complete set, craft the badge:
- Collect every card in the sale’s set.
- Open your Badges page and select the craftable sale badge.
- Use the Craft Badge control to craft it.
During the sale, the sale badge can be crafted repeatedly. Steam’s FAQ contrasts this with standard game badges, which it describes as craftable only a limited number of times. The FAQ does not give the full limits for every game badge, so avoid assuming a count for a badge you are working on.

What crafting a sale badge gives you
Crafting a sale badge grants:
- Profile XP
- An event-themed emoticon
- A profile background
Crafting a further complete set levels up the same sale badge and grants additional items. Steam’s FAQ says these reward items can be traded or sold on the Community Market.
Regular and foil sale badges
Some sale events offer a foil version of the badge. Foil sale badges require foil trading cards rather than standard ones.

| Feature | Regular sale badge | Foil sale badge |
|---|---|---|
| Cards required | Standard sale trading cards | Foil sale trading cards |
| Card rarity, as Steam describes it | Not stated | Exceedingly rare and randomly dropped |
| Reward items, as listed in Steam’s FAQ | Not stated separately for the regular version | Not stated separately for the foil version |
The foil requirement is the only difference Steam’s sale FAQ spells out between the two versions.
Sale card timing
Sale cards have a limited trading window. According to Steam’s FAQ, they can no longer be traded or sold on the Community Market 30 days after the sale ends. A player who already holds a complete set can still craft the sale badge after the sale, so the window affects trading and selling, not crafting.

Badges, XP and Steam levels
Badges are one of several inputs to your Steam level. Steam Support says that any account that is not a limited user earns a Steam level based on its current badges and games. The ways it lists to raise profile XP are:
- Purchasing games
- Earning badges
- Crafting badges
- Upgrading badges
Limited users stay at level 0 and do not qualify for Steam levels.

- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Steam Support lists these level-based profile features. All figures come from its undated “Steam Levels and XP” FAQ, accessed in 2026, and are Steam’s stated values rather than independently tested ones.
| Profile feature | Steam’s stated figure |
|---|---|
| Friend limit at start | 250 friends |
| Friend slots added per level | 5 |
| Maximum friend slots | 2,000 |
| Showcase slots gained | 1 per 10 levels |
| Current maximum showcase slots | 20; Steam says an extra showcase slot can be purchased in the Points Shop beyond that maximum |
What Steam Support cannot do
Steam Support does not grant rewards directly. Its FAQ states: “Steam Support is unable to alter your Steam level and cannot grant XP, badges, trading cards or other economy items.” If a badge or card is missing, the route is the platform’s own crafting, trading, or purchase mechanics described above, not a support request.
What the official sources do not establish
The sale-badge rules above are specific to sale events. The official material available for this article does not establish the drop eligibility, full craft limits, or complete reward list for standard game badges. Before acting on a rule for a game badge, check Steam’s current Trading Cards FAQ and that game’s badge page, because the sale-badge FAQ alone is not enough to generalize from.
Event dates, card counts, and purchase options should likewise be read from the live sale page, since they change between events.
