Enter it on Steam’s Add a Friend page to send a friend request—but it is not a password, Steam ID, product key, or login credential.
What is a Steam Friend Code?
A Steam Friend Code is a number associated with a Steam account for the purpose of finding that account in Steam’s friend-management system. It is useful when several people have similar names or when a friend’s display name is difficult to search for.

The code normally identifies an account in the friend-add interface and lets you send an invitation. It does not instantly make you friends: the recipient generally needs to accept the pending request.
What a Friend Code is not
- Not a Steam account name: your account name is used to sign in and should not be shared as though it were a password.
- Not a display name: display names appear publicly and can be changed, so they are not reliable account identifiers. Steam explains that displayed names can change.
- Not a custom profile URL: a profile link is another way to share or verify an account.
- Not a SteamID or SteamID64: those are technical identifiers used in other Steam and developer contexts.
- Not a game activation key: it cannot unlock a game or add one to an account.
How to find your Steam Friend Code
In the Steam desktop app
- Sign in to Steam.
- Open Friends & Chat, or open the Friends area from the client.
- Select Add a Friend.
- Find the section labeled Your Friend Code.
- Copy the number using Steam’s copy control, if available, or select and copy it manually.
Steam can move menu items or change button labels between client revisions and languages. The important destination is the Add a Friend page and its Your Friend Code section.

In a web browser
Open Steam’s official Friends/Add a Friend page and sign in if prompted. Your code should be available in the Your Friend Code section.
In the Steam mobile app
- Open Steam Mobile and sign in to the intended account.
- Open the Friends or Community area.
- Select Add a Friend.
- View or copy Your Friend Code.
The exact mobile path can vary by operating system and app revision. Steam’s official mobile information lists friend-request notifications among Steam Mobile’s features: Steam Mobile. If the code is not visible in the app, open steamcommunity.com/friends/add in your mobile browser instead. Steam Chat is a separate, chat-focused app listed by Steam.
How to add someone with their Friend Code
- Open Steam and go to Friends & Chat or the Friends area.
- Choose Add a Friend.
- Find Enter a Friend Code.
- Paste or type the other person’s code.
- Check the returned account carefully.
- Select Send Invite, or the equivalent friend-request button shown by Steam.
- Wait for the recipient to accept.
Before sending the request, compare the profile’s display name, avatar, profile details, and any shared context such as a game or group. A display name alone is not enough to verify someone because names can change and impersonators may use similar ones.

How to accept a Steam friend request
The recipient can accept from a Steam friend-request notification, the Friends list, pending invitations in the Friends management area, or a Steam Mobile notification if notifications are enabled. Entering a Friend Code creates a pending invitation; the relationship becomes an accepted friendship only after the recipient approves it. How to use a Steam invite link
An invite link is often easier than reading a number aloud or typing it across devices. Steam officially supports creating and sharing invitation links. See Steam Support’s guidance.
- Open Steam’s Add a Friend page.
- Find the option to create or share an invitation link.
- Copy the link.
- Send it through a trusted service such as a private message, text, or email.
- Have the recipient open it while signed in to the intended Steam account.
- Verify the profile before accepting the invitation.
A link is convenient, but it is not automatically safer than a Friend Code. Both can be forwarded, so share either only with people you intend to contact.

Friend Code versus names, profile links, and Steam IDs

Why can’t I add someone on Steam?
“No results found”
Check for a mistyped digit, spaces, or extra characters. The other person may have given you a SteamID64, a game-specific player ID, or another number instead of a Friend Code. Copy the code again from their Your Friend Code screen, or use an official invite link. Also confirm that both of you are signed in to the intended accounts and try the web page if the desktop client fails, or vice versa.
“Error adding friend”
Possible causes include an existing pending request, an account restriction or request limit, a blocked or ignored relationship, or a temporary Steam service or client problem. Check Pending Invites, confirm neither account has blocked the other, restart Steam, and retry. You can also ask the recipient to send the request or use an invite link.
Steam tracks ignored and blocked relationships separately from ordinary friendships, and those states can affect friend interactions. Account-specific social restrictions may also apply, particularly to new or limited accounts; Steam Support is the appropriate place to check an account’s status.

The request worked, but messaging or game invites do not
A pending request may not provide the same features as an accepted friendship. Even after acceptance, game invites depend on the individual game’s multiplayer design, Steamworks integration, lobby rules, cross-platform support, and account requirements. Steam friendship alone does not guarantee a join button or cross-platform play.

A Friend Code is not a login secret. By itself, it does not let another person sign in, change your password, access your games, view private account data, spend wallet funds, bypass Steam Guard, or force you to accept a request.

Ignore messages claiming that someone “accidentally reported” your account or asking you to verify it through an unfamiliar link. Never use third-party Friend Code generators, lookup services, unofficial mobile apps, or paid account-recovery services. Steam Guard is separate protection for account sign-ins; it does not replace cautious handling of friend requests. Steam Guard information.
Do Steam Friend Codes add players inside games?
No. A Friend Code adds a contact to your Steam Friends system. Whether you can invite, join, or message that person inside a particular game depends on that game’s own systems and requirements. Players may still need the same game, compatible versions, appropriate ownership or access, and support for the same platform or cross-platform play.
Steamworks provides separate friend and game-invitation functionality for developers, including invitations involving Steam IDs and game-specific connection data. That technical feature should not be confused with the Friend Code used to send a Steam friend request: Steamworks documentation.
