For branch-mining in current Overworld generation, aim for Y -59. It is the lowest practical tunnel level above the bedrock floor, where the diamond-ore distribution is densest. X and Z are your horizontal location; for this mining strategy, the important coordinate is Y.
Why Y -59 is the practical target
Mojang’s Java 1.18 release notes say, “Diamond Ore generates below height 16, with more Diamond Ore the lower you go.” The notes also explain that diamond ore has reduced exposure to air. Read Mojang’s release notes.
A chart based on Minecraft 26.3 release world-generation data places diamond generation from Y -64 to 16 and recommends mining at Y -59. The theoretical distribution peak is at the bottom, but bedrock occupies roughly Y -64 through Y -60, making Y -59 a useful clear level for a tunnel. The chart says the distribution is unchanged from 1.21; it is a third-party interpretation of game data, not an official Mojang recommendation. See the chart and its version notes.
How to find your Y coordinate
- Java Edition: Press F3 to open the debug screen and find your current coordinates. Read the Y value.
- Bedrock Edition: Open the world’s settings, enable “Show Coordinates,” and read the displayed Y value.
- Move to around Y -59 before digging your branch-mining tunnels. The Minecraft Wiki’s mining tutorial covers coordinate display in both editions.
Branch mining or cave exploration?
Branch mining
At Y -59, dig through solid blocks and create branches to expose ore that may not be visible from caves. This is a sensible default because diamond ore generation is reduced near air. Neither Mojang’s notes nor the chart establish a guaranteed yield or a diamonds-per-hour advantage.

Cave exploration
Caves can reveal exposed ore while sparing you from digging every block, but cave walls do not reveal all generated diamond ore. Reduced air exposure means some deposits may not be visible from open cave surfaces. Choose caves for exploration and visible opportunities; choose tunnels when you want to search through solid rock.
Is Y -58 or Y -59 better?
The cited chart describes the difference as negligible and favors Y -59 as the practical level for a two-block-high tunnel. Either is a reasonable target; the available data does not support a meaningful efficiency claim for one over the other.

Bring a pickaxe that can collect diamonds
Use an iron pickaxe or better to mine diamond ore for its drops. Wood, stone, and gold pickaxes do not drop diamonds from the ore, according to the Minecraft Wiki’s diamond tutorial.

The general rule about diamonds becoming more common at lower heights comes from Mojang’s Java 1.18 release notes, published November 30, 2021. The specific Y -59 recommendation comes from the MinecraftMaps.com chart, which identifies its data as Minecraft 26.3 and says the distribution is unchanged from 1.21. Recheck the recommendation after major world-generation changes.
