There is no single best Dexterity weapon for every Dark Souls player. For a practical melee shortlist, start with the Great Scythe or Uchigatana on the standard physical upgrade path; consider the Balder Side Sword if its moveset suits you better. These are recommendations, not a proven damage ranking: the available references document weapon stats and upgrade paths, but do not provide controlled comparisons of performance.
Best Dexterity weapons to consider
Choose based on how a weapon attacks and fits your character, not its scaling letter alone. These candidates cover distinct preferences, but the references do not establish a universal winner or a PvE or PvP ranking.

Great Scythe: a high-damage standard-path candidate
The Great Scythe’s standard +15 table lists 250 physical damage and 85% Dexterity scaling. Those are values listed by the Dark Souls Wiki (Wikidot), accessed in 2026—not an independently tested comparison against other weapons. Its table shows the standard scaling grade changing to A at later upgrade levels.
It is a strong candidate if you want a Dexterity-focused weapon and like its attack pattern. The cited figures alone do not establish its practical damage, range, stamina use, or matchup performance relative to the other options.

Uchigatana: a katana option with different upgrade paths
The Uchigatana is listed as a Dexterity weapon, and its upgrade-path tables show that its scaling varies by path. Its place on the shortlist is a practical alternative for players who prefer a katana, not evidence that it outperforms the Great Scythe.
Balder Side Sword: a moveset alternative
The Balder Side Sword appears among the B-scaling Dexterity weapons listed by the Dark Souls Wiki (Fandom). Consider it if its moveset feels better to you; the cited material does not provide an objective damage ranking against the other candidates.

Specialized alternatives: other melee weapons and a bow
The same Dexterity reference lists Gold Tracer and Painting Guardian Sword among high-scaling options. It reports 109% Dexterity scaling for Painting Guardian Sword on Standard and Crystal paths, and 145% for Dark Silver Tracer. Those percentages are reference-page values, not a guarantee of higher damage in play.
Black Bow of Pharis is a ranged option rather than a direct melee substitute. The reference reports 165% Dexterity scaling on Standard and Crystal paths and calls it the highest-scaling Dexterity weapon overall. That distinction does not make it the best melee weapon or prove superior damage potential.

How to choose the right weapon
Compare the factors that affect how you will actually use the weapon. The cited references are strongest on scaling and upgrade paths; they do not establish detailed range, stamina cost, acquisition timing, matchup performance, or PvP rankings.
- Start with the attack pattern. Pick the weapon category and moveset you prefer. A scaling grade is not a complete measure of performance.
- Check your character’s stats and equipment fit. Compare requirements and weight against your build. The available references do not provide a verified, side-by-side comparison of these details for the shortlist.
- Compare the standard-path scaling and damage type. For a character investing heavily in Dexterity, a standard physical path is the natural default; the weapons’ figures and scaling vary by weapon and upgrade level.
- Consider upgrade materials and availability. These can affect how practical a choice is for your playthrough, but the cited material does not establish a comparative acquisition timeline for the candidates.
- Account for the purpose of your build. A ranged weapon, a preferred moveset, or a different stat plan may matter more than maximizing a scaling percentage.
Why standard upgrades usually suit a Dexterity build
Upgrade paths change how weapons use character stats. The Great Scythe reference says elemental routes remove stat bonuses, while its standard path retains Dexterity scaling. The Uchigatana tables likewise show path-specific scaling. For a build investing heavily in Dexterity, standard physical upgrades are therefore the natural default; an elemental route may make sense for a different stat plan or specific purpose.

Scaling is conditional, not a fixed bonus applied identically to every character. The scaling reference describes added attack rating as depending on weapon parameters, upgrade correction or path, and the character’s stat value. A percentage or letter grade by itself cannot settle which weapon deals more damage in a particular build.
How much Dexterity to invest
The Dexterity reference says the scaling contribution drops substantially after 40 for Normal, Raw, Crystal, and unique weapons. Treat 40 as a general planning point for those paths, not as a claim that Dexterity provides no other benefit beyond it. The exact value of additional investment depends on your weapon and build.

The cited values come from community-maintained game reference pages. They support listed attack values, scaling, and upgrade-path mechanics, but they do not establish a controlled comparison of movesets, stamina use, reach, enemy resistances, acquisition difficulty, or PvP usefulness. They also do not establish a version-specific winner between the original game and Dark Souls: Remastered. Choose by your stats and preferred attack pattern, and avoid treating a scaling percentage as a standalone performance ranking.
