For a practical opening route in Graveyard Keeper 2, prioritize Bronze Works, Gardening, Chopping, Woodworking I, and The Concept of Stone. Together, they open early metalworking, farming, wood, and stone options. Treat that as a flexible default: buy toward your next quest or material bottleneck, and check each node’s prerequisites, mastery gates, and point colors before spending.
The best early technologies to unlock
A beginner guide updated October 1, 2026 for PC update 1.007 recommends these five technologies. The costs below are the listed technology-point costs, not measured time or performance comparisons. Keeper’s Field Guide II’s beginner guide gives the route and practical reasons for each pick.
| Technology | Cost | Why it matters early |
|---|---|---|
| Bronze Works | 5 red | Opens a Wooden Anvil and Bronze Nails from Bronze Scrap. |
| Gardening | 5 green | Opens garden beds needed for Herm’s wheat request. |
| Chopping | 8 red | Unlocks wood wedges and firewood. |
| Woodworking I | 10 red | Unlocks Wooden Planks, used in many early recipes. |
| The Concept of Stone | 15 red | Allows you to make Pieces of stone. |
Choose the next purchase by the obstacle in front of you
- Construction materials: prioritize Chopping, Woodworking I, and The Concept of Stone, while satisfying their Building mastery requirements.
- Herm’s farming request: take Gardening and plant the wheat early; it can grow while you work on other tasks.
- Metalworking: Bronze Works is a useful gateway, but it is not the whole Bronze Detail unlock.
A first-week walkthrough recommends the same core set, with Chopping and The Concept of Stone before Woodworking I. That variation is a reminder that there is no established universal order: favor whichever unlock addresses your immediate quest or crafting need. The technology reference lists node costs and dependencies; a technology planner is another way to inspect the tree.
Check the starter reward before spending points
Your first sleep at home grants The Concept of Wood and a Sawhorse for free, according to the first-week walkthrough. A planner lists The Concept of Wood at 2 red and 2 green, but that is the node’s listed cost; the opening reward can grant it without spending those points. Check your unlocked technologies after the first sleep before budgeting for it.

How to earn points without grinding one activity
Chopping, mining, clearing junk, and harvesting produce technology points. Early red and green points are available through these ordinary activities, while blue points are scarcer and can come from autopsy actions. Points left on the ground persist until collected on sleep, and the game-data reference lists a carrying cap of 999 points per color. So collect points as you perform opening tasks rather than stopping to farm one source. These mechanics and figures are listed in the technology reference.
Mind mastery gates and prerequisites
Having the point cost is not always enough to use a technology’s unlocks. The first-week walkthrough says wood wedges and Pieces of stone require Building mastery 3; rusty tools provide only +1 each. Keep relevant tools on your toolbar and earn the first Building talent point through the Lumberjack and Rock Breaker inspirations. Check the node’s prerequisites in the tree before committing points.

Bronze Works is not Bronze Detail
Bronze Works costs 5 red and is a root Metallurgy technology that gives access to the anvil. Bronze Craft is a separate node: it follows Bronze Melting, costs 30 red, and unlocks Bronze Detail. The game-data reference says Bronze Detail sits behind three Metallurgy technologies costing 45 red together, and that many opening steps need it. Do not plan on Bronze Works alone supplying Bronze Detail.
Keep early blue points in mind for anatomy
If you want to open anatomy progression, the walkthrough recommends picking a pocket during the autopsy before the first burial to obtain an early blue point. Skin and Bones costs 5 green and 2 blue and requires the initial Anatomy mastery progression, so check both the point balance and the gate before planning around it.

A simple way to decide what to unlock next
- Identify the next active quest or recipe. Note the exact material or action blocking progress.
- Find the technology that provides it. Check the tree for its point-color cost, prerequisites, and mastery requirement.
- Compare the payoff with other immediate needs. Prefer an unlock that supports several early recipes or resolves a current bottleneck over buying far ahead.
- Gather points during normal work. Chopping, mining, clearing, and harvesting all contribute; collect points before sleeping.
The current beginner guide advises following the next quest rather than buying technologies far in advance. No consulted source provides a measured speedrun-optimal order, win-rate comparison, or time-saved figure.

In its Steam announcement, developer Lazy Bear Games and publisher tinyBuild said: “We’re also keeping the familiar progression through the Technology Tree, while introducing a new talent system designed to make the grind you love so much more enjoyable.” That is promotional language about the design, not independent evidence that progression is easier or better balanced. Steam announcements for Graveyard Keeper 2 also describe rebuilding and defending the town, automating production, and leading an undead army.
