For a crop-processing farm, Tiller at Farming level 5 followed by Artisan at level 10 is a strong default. Other skills have equally clear choices when they match your goals—such as Fisher into Angler for active fishing or Fighter into Brute for straightforward damage.
How professions work
Stardew Valley has five core skills: Farming, Mining, Foraging, Fishing, and Combat. You choose a profession at skill level 5 and another at level 10. Your level 5 choice determines which level 10 professions become available, so consider the whole route rather than choosing only for its immediate bonus. Skill experience comes from activities tied to each skill: farming and animal care, breaking rocks, gathering and chopping trees, fishing or harvesting crab pots, and fighting monsters.

The game supports several ways to play and earn money; its profession mechanics do not establish a universal profitability ranking. A useful way to decide is to ask which activity you do often, what resource or income source you want to improve, and whether the benefit supports your current farm plans.
Best Farming professions
Choose between crop value and animal-product value at level 5, then follow the corresponding branch at level 10.
#1 Best Overall

| Route | Level 5 | Level 10 choices | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crop value | Tiller: qualifying crops sell for 10% more. | Artisan: qualifying artisan goods sell for 40% more. Agriculturist: crops grow 10% faster. | Artisan is a strong choice for a crop farm that processes goods for sale. Choose Agriculturist if faster crop growth better suits your plans. |
| Animal products | Rancher: animal products sell for 20% more. | Coopmaster: faster coop-animal friendship and shorter incubation. Shepherd: faster barn-animal friendship and wool production. | Choose according to whether your priorities are coop animals or barn animals and wool. |
Artisan does not increase the value of oil, so the bonus does not apply to every processed product. Agriculturist’s faster growth is a timing benefit, not a universally higher-profit option; its financial value depends on the crops and seasons in your plan.
Best Mining professions
| Route | Level 5 | Level 10 choices | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ore | Miner: each ore vein yields one extra ore. | Blacksmith: metal bars sell for 50% more. Prospector: chance to find coal is doubled. | Pick Miner when ore for crafting or upgrades is the priority; at level 10, choose between bar value and coal supply. |
| Gems and geodes | Geologist: gems have a chance to appear in pairs. | Excavator: chance to find geodes is doubled. Gemologist: gems sell for 30% more. | Pick Geologist when collecting or selling gems and geodes fits your goals; choose Excavator for more geodes or Gemologist for gem value. |
These branches improve different things: extra coal and geodes can support resource gathering, while Blacksmith and Gemologist affect sale value. The better route depends on whether you need materials or want to sell what you find.

| Forage collection | Gatherer: 20% chance to harvest forage items twice. | Botanist: forage items are always highest quality. Tracker: forageable locations are revealed. | Gatherer into Botanist suits collection-focused play; Tracker favors easier discovery of forageables. |

|---|---|---|---|
| Active fishing | Fisher: fish sell for 25% more. | Angler: fish sell for 50% more. Pirate: chance to find treasure is doubled. | Fisher into Angler is a clear choice if you actively catch and sell fish; Pirate fits treasure-seeking. |
| Crab pots | Trapper: fewer resources are required to craft crab pots. | Mariner: crab pots no longer produce junk. Luremaster: crab pots no longer require bait. | Choose Trapper for a crab-pot plan, then pick whether avoiding junk or bait better suits your routine. |
Best Combat professions
| Route | Level 5 | Level 10 choices | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct damage and durability | Fighter: all attacks deal 10% more damage and you gain 15 HP. | Brute: deal 15% more damage. Defender: gain 25 HP. | Fighter into Brute is a straightforward damage route; Defender emphasizes survivability. |
| Critical hits and special moves | Scout: critical-strike chance increases by 50% multiplicatively. | Acrobat: special-move cooldown is halved. Desperado: critical-strike damage is doubled. | Choose according to whether your weapon and play style rely on special moves or critical hits. |
Scout’s bonuses are style-dependent: a critical-focused route is not automatically best for every weapon or combat approach.
Can you change professions later?
Yes. The Statue of Uncertainty in the Sewers lets you change a profession for 10,000g. Select a skill at the statue; after you sleep, the relevant profession-choice screens appear. Changing removes the existing profession bonus, so treat it as a paid adjustment rather than a free toggle.
A quick way to choose
- Crop processing: Tiller into Artisan, if the goods you sell qualify for Artisan’s bonus.
- Animal-centered farm: Rancher, then Coopmaster or Shepherd to match your coop or barn priorities.
- Mining: choose ore or gem/geode gathering based on the materials you need or want to sell.
- Foraging: favor Gatherer for extra forage, or Forester for a wood or syrup focus.
- Fishing: choose Fisher for active catches or Trapper for crab pots.
- Combat: choose Fighter for direct damage and health, or Scout if your approach centers on critical hits or special moves.
These are goal-based recommendations, not a tested ranking across saves. If your priorities change, the Statue of Uncertainty offers a way to revise a choice for a fee.
