For a standard warlock using the 2024 rules, make Charisma your highest ability score. Choose Constitution and Dexterity as your next priorities in whichever order best suits your build: Constitution helps with hit points and concentration-related checks, while Dexterity supports initiative and defenses. Pact of the Blade lets you use Charisma for attacks and damage with your bonded weapon, so a melee warlock does not automatically need high Strength.
Which ability score matters most for a warlock?
Charisma: the clear first choice
Charisma is the warlock’s primary ability and spellcasting ability in both the 2024 rules and the 2014 legacy rules. It affects how effective the warlock’s spells are, so prioritize it whether you plan to focus on spells, fight with a pact weapon, or mix both approaches. The official 2024 Warlock class rules identify Charisma as the class’s primary ability.
Constitution: durability and concentration
Constitution contributes to hit points, and a warlock gains a d8 Hit Point Die per Warlock level under the 2024 class rules. A strong Constitution score is therefore a practical way to improve resilience. It also supports Constitution checks, including checks to maintain concentration when the applicable rules call for one. This makes Constitution valuable, but does not establish it as the universal second-highest score for every build.
Dexterity: initiative and defenses
Warlocks have light armor training under the 2024 rules. Dexterity can help with initiative and Dexterity-based defenses, making it a useful secondary score. How much to invest depends on your character’s defensive needs and other choices; the rules do not set one mandatory Dexterity threshold for every warlock.

How should you prioritize scores for your build?
| Build or priority | Practical approach | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Spell-focused warlock | Prioritize Charisma, then balance Constitution and Dexterity. | Charisma is the spellcasting ability; Constitution supports durability and concentration, while Dexterity can support initiative and defenses. |
| Pact of the Blade warlock | Prioritize Charisma, then choose Constitution and Dexterity based on your defensive needs. | The 2024 Pact of the Blade invocation lets you use Charisma instead of Strength or Dexterity for attack and damage rolls with the bonded weapon. |
| Warlock prioritizing durability | Give Constitution more weight after Charisma. | Constitution contributes to hit points and concentration-related checks. |
| Warlock prioritizing initiative and Dexterity-based defenses | Give Dexterity more weight after Charisma. | Dexterity is relevant to initiative and those defenses, and the class has light armor training. |
The Pact of the Blade rule applies to attack and damage rolls with the bonded weapon; it is not a reason to ignore Dexterity’s defensive uses or Constitution’s contribution to resilience. For other ability scores, keep Strength, Intelligence, and Wisdom suited to your character concept and party role unless a chosen option, multiclass plan, or campaign creates a specific need.
Is there one best warlock stat array?
No single numeric array is mandatory. The 2024 Player’s Handbook, published September 3, 2024, includes character-creation guidance with recommended ability scores based on class, while backgrounds provide ability-score adjustments. Those recommendations are starting guidance, not a rule that every warlock must use the same final scores. See the official 2024 Player’s Handbook overview for the character-creation context.

Treat any suggested array as an example only when those assumptions are stated; the available official overview confirms class-based recommendations and background adjustments but does not provide the warlock’s exact recommended array.

The central recommendation is consistent: Charisma is the warlock’s spellcasting ability in both versions. This article’s class references to light armor training, the d8 Hit Point Die, and Pact of the Blade’s Charisma option are specifically about the 2024 rules. If your table is using the 2014 rules, consult the 2014 Basic Rules rather than assuming every class feature or character-creation detail is identical.
