There is no single best Clan Castle troop lineup for every situation. For defense, choose a mix that can respond to both air and ground attacks; for offense, request reinforcements that support the army and target you have planned. Your available Clan Castle capacity, Town Hall level and likely opponents should shape the choice.
Choose troops for the job
First decide whether you need troops for an attack, your regular village defense, or a Clan War or Clan War League War Base. Those uses call for different choices: a defensive lineup is meant to complicate an opponent’s attack, while offensive reinforcements should help your own strategy.
For attacks
Request troops that complement your army and intended target rather than copying a defensive lineup by default. Supercell’s Clan Castle Troops & Spells guide says requests can specify troops, spells and siege machines, and donated troops can be used in multiplayer and Clan War or Clan War League attacks. Access to siege machines is separately governed by Town Hall and Clan Castle level.
For regular village defense
Use a varied mix with both air and ground coverage, sized to the Clan Castle’s actual available housing space. Consider the attack strategies common at your Town Hall and avoid making every Clan Castle in the clan identical, so opponents cannot rely on one predictable response.

#1 Best Overall
For a War Base
The defensive Clan Castle on a Clan War or Clan War League War Base is separate from the one in your village. War donations are made through the War Map, so fill the War Base’s Clan Castle separately rather than assuming village donations cover it.
Check your Clan Castle capacity
The Clan Castle’s available housing space limits how much you can request or donate. If yours is not upgraded to the level associated with your Town Hall, choose a lineup that fits its actual capacity rather than the table’s higher figure.
| Town Hall | Defensive Clan Castle capacity listed by Clash Ninja |
|---|---|
| TH8 | 25 troop spaces |
| TH9 | 30 troop spaces |
| TH10–11 | 35 troop spaces |
| TH12 | 40 troop spaces |
| TH13–14 | 45 troop spaces |
| TH15–16 | 50 troop spaces |
| TH17–18 | 55 troop spaces |
These capacity figures are from the third-party Clash Ninja defensive troop guide; Supercell’s support page explains Clan Castle mechanics but is not the source of this table.
Defensive examples, not guaranteed counters
Clash Ninja’s guide suggests different defensive mixes by Town Hall and anticipated attack style. Among its examples are Baby Dragon and Ice Golem combinations at TH10–11 and TH12, and combinations using Ice Golems and Headhunters at some higher levels. Treat these as options to adapt to your capacity and opponents, not as a universal ranking or proven counter: the guide is community advice, not a controlled comparison.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe more durable principles are to cover both air and ground, use housing space effectively, account for likely attacks and vary your clan’s defensive lineups. A composition that distracts or slows one attacking force may be less useful against another, so no named mix should be treated as best for every base.

Guard and Sleep
For multiplayer defense, Guard makes donated troops defend when an enemy enters the Clan Castle’s trigger zone. Sleep leaves them inactive. Check this setting if troops are available but are not responding to an attack.
Rank #4
Deployment order
Troops deploy by housing space, not by donation order: Supercell says the troops using the least housing space deploy first, and troops with equal housing space are selected randomly. This means you cannot rely on donation order to determine which equal-space troop appears first.
Attacking consumes donated troops
Donated troops can be used in attacks and are deployed once per attack. They do not return to the Clan Castle afterward, even if they survive, according to Supercell’s support guide.
Why there is no permanent “best” lineup
Supercell’s March 24, 2026 gameplay update says balance changes have produced a more diverse meta, with use spread across a wider range of troops, and that further tuning is expected. The update does not publish a Clan Castle composition win-rate ranking, so it cannot establish that one defensive mix is objectively best. Supercell’s stated aim is to preserve multiple viable approaches rather than make every strategy equal. That makes capacity, opponent tendencies and the specific job more useful guides than a permanent tier list.
